Is there anyway/where I can have my phone repaired while I wait with MTN? Both my power & home buttons are responding too good & will need possible replacement. I am loath to send the phone away in its impeccable scratch free state because the risk of it returning scratched is just too great. Plus they refuse to send away accessorized phones (so can't put it in a cover).

They are not allowed to repair an iPhone, you will get a refurb unit - scratch free.

So who repaired the refurb unit then?

They get them straight from Apple. Only Apple can work on faulty iPhones, AFAIK no local Apple does that. Goes overseas at least that's what I was told.

That's correct, you will get a refurb unit with a serial number starting with 5K....

These are units that are returned to Apple and then sent back to China for remanufacture, replacing the faulty parts with new as well as replacing the front and back cover...

Will they swap the phone while I wait (meaning I don't need to find a replacement in the meantime (microsim adapter & all))?

After all I would need to delete all data on the phone before handing it back to apple.

You will only get a refurb on after a few days, once the apple certified tech has confirmed the defect...

It takes about 7 days for you to get a refurb, I have had about 3 iPhones sent through via Vodacom and all of them I got a refurb.

****! I forgot about the one year only warranty on the iPhone. And I'm getting quoted R2680. Darn it!

Hi R13,

I'm new on here but saw your thread and thought I could help considering your iPhone is out of warranty.

Faulty home buttons and power buttons are the two of the most common issues people have with their iPhone 4's.

If you haven't had your phone repaired already, we will be able to help you. We run an on-site iPhone repair service in Johannesburg. www.PlatinumRepairs.co.za. Our technician can come out to you and fix the phone at your home of office during office hours, so you don't have to worry about your phone being scratched or being without it for more than an hour.

The total cost would be R800.

If you would like more info, please PM me or contact us through the website.

Kind regards,

Brad

I am busy going through this at the moment - I am not sure if the process is any different without insurance through MTN insurance, but in my case:
- The power button being stuck seems to be a common problem. While overseas Apple would do a swop-out regardless of the age of the phone, MTN carries only a 1-year-warranty
- I phoned MTN insurance to file a claim (this was on Saturday two weeks ago) and they sent through a courier (CourierIT) the next Monday with a swop-out phone (they only do iPhone 4 16GB)
- You swop the phone out with the courier - just make sure to delete all content and do a factory reset on your old one and make sure you did a full backup (I painfully learned, that my iCloud backups did not always work, and I suggest doing an iTunes backup)

Still waiting for the repaired phone. I was quoted R 2650 for the repair, but with MTN insurance only have to pay R150 excess. The option mentioned by PlatinumRepairs (not sure about them as this is their first post) sounds like a better option if you don't have insurance.

Hi Gerd,

Just for some background, a lot of people on here would have used iPhoneRepairs.co.za at some point - we are part of the same company.

My personal profile on bidorbuy is PositiveCashflow. You will see I've been dealing in iPhones for many years.

R150 through insurance is a great way to get it sorted out. Just test your proximity sensor as soon as you get it back, it's part of the same flex cable that the power button is on and it is very sensitive - we have seen it a few times where people have had their power button replaced and then the proximity sensor doesn't work.

If your really want a positive response from people you need to register as a dealer/rep. Otherwise you will not......

Contact a mod to arrange that or be gone.
