iPhone versus Android

Regarding ecosystems, tell me I am wrong but this is my personal observations

I have Windows PC's and laptops, and I recently bought an Android Samsung S3.

I also have a complete Apple ecosystem - iMac, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, iPad, iPad mini, iPhone, iPod touch etc

While the Samsung S3 is an excellent phone, possibly better than the iPhone 5, and the Android software is also excellent. Where I fail however, is getting everything streamlined across my Windows 7 PC's and Windows 7 laptops and my Android S3 phone. It is REALLY fiddly and finicky. Highly frustrating.

My Apple ecosystem on the other hand is highly automated and intuitive. I change something on my iPad, and before I can run over to my iPhone or one of my Macs.....the changes have already be made on them. Amazing to drop a file/picture whatever on one device and appears on the others. Excellent if you use Calendars, Notes, sharing Word docs etc

To summarise, I love my Samsung S3 and Android operating system, but it frustrates the heck out of me. Resulting in me going back to using my old iPhone 4. Google is a fantastic company, but their ecosystem (if you can call it that) is a very far cry from that of Apples.

Obviously, to truly experience the advantages of the Apple ecosystem, you need all the Apple stuff, Macs iPad, iPhone etc etc. You won't benefit from this experience if you only have an iPhone, or just the iPad.

Equally the arguments against.
Doubt it, and the graph in the lead story seems to agree with me. Can't wait for the next sales figures to be released so i can be vindicated on my predictions of last year.

Was is the US during mid December for some business, and thought I'd try my luck at getting a nexus 10. Visited Walmart, Target, Staples and Best Buy. At all stores the scenario was the same. Huge ipad mini displays and loads of stock. Without exception the Android department looked like a swarm of locusts had gone through it with maybe 1 lost Asus or Samsung demo model on the display counter and zero stock.

Needless to say I am still without a nexus 10, but will try my luck again when I go back in Feb for more business

I'm also waiting for sales figures to come out lol. Don't know if you noticed but iPhones recently surpassed 50% of the total smartphone market in the US, so popularity seems to be going up over there if anything. Not possible the Android vendors just failed to supply adequately for the season's demand?

Try getting an iPhone 5 in SA at the moment. Practically impossible and has nothing to do with the devices local popularity and everything to do with gross mismanagement.

I agree, I can't wait to see the sales of the iPad vs nexus 7/10!

Sadly, I agree. I think it has to do with Vodacom and MTN. They can make more from selling Android products, so they don't push the iPhone at all, and only carry minimal stock. You never see the iPhone on display in their shops, and the shop assistants won't offer it to you as an alternative. They'd much rather steer you towards a Blackberry or Samsung.

Yeah, I also figured it was badly stocked, but at multiple stores with multiple vendors having the same issue I came to another conclusion. Also while the shop floor adverts belonged to apple, the television belonged to Samsung with insane deals on the S3.

Due to the CPA they are wary of selling phones where features do not work or are promised to work at a later date.

Just...why???? Does your whole family use all of that? Don't you know there are Gumtree recipients just waiting to buy your unused electronics?

Hehe. My wife says I am an addict in need of therapy and rehab. I agree, but fortunately the psychologist don't understand a word I'm saying, and when I told her I am using tablets daily for my addiction she said I should then be fine as long as I don't stop using them. No worries I told her, they are always with me and I start my day off with one and have one when I go to sleep. LOL!

No look I have a similar addiction so I have full sympathies. It's just that I constantly have the ONE device glued to my face wherever I go. Mind you, I could see myself going down that road if budgetary constraints were removed.

Haha, if that's a thinly veiled dig at Apple Maps, I'm pretty sure the Apple ToS take care of that!

Quite frankly I think Shuttleworth has missed the boat and needs to catch a serious wake up. For as long as Unbuntu remains in the realm of IT geeks as far as installation and configuring is concerned is as long as it will remain out of the forefront of platforms. I use Ubuntu as a file server but the constant issues around configuring and keeps me away from using it for anything else. Added to this, some of the software for Ubuntu needs serious advancement. So I won't be looking for Ubuntu on my Galaxy S3 anytime soon.
