IS News Server down?

This is now really starting to grate my carrot... IS come to the party and let us know what the hell is happening!!!

IS resellers I am utterly disappointed that you have not mentioned a word about the IS news server on this forum, no follow ups , no feedback, cummon you guys are closer to the party than we are!!!

Do you guys understand that the news server is fundamental to your business??? If the service levels from IS dont improve, slowly but surely you are going to loose a whole lot of customers. Remember

1. IS latency is shocking
2. IS performance during bad weather is shocking (summer is on the way - Highveld rains???)
3. IS reliability during office hours is shocking

The only things that make IS accounts attractive are:

1. 30gb local access
2. News server access

The moment the news server is unuseable, the IS accounts become far less attractive... I would have thought that the IS resellers having a number of customers on their books could push their weight and represent the masses, but alas seems we all give up at some point.

I am seriouly considering dropping this IS account and going for a more reliable outfit (well its either one or the other, so SAIX consider this a new customer on your books in the near future)!!!

IS MPLS, Telkom maintenance, Port Elizabeth, 16 September 2006 @ 00h00 - 06h00:
Due to Telkom maintenance on Saturday morning, the 16th September 2006 @ 00h00 - 06h00 (SAST), the IS MPLS service to our Port Elizabeth PoP will be affected. Telkom engineers will be working on 8 of the 16 lines between Port Elizabeth and Rosebank. Traffic will be rerouted via Cape Town. Customers may experience a minor degradation of service. City Power has informed IS that there will be municipal power disruptions on Sunday morning, the 17th September 2006 @ 00h00 - 07h00 (SAST), in the Rosebank area. The IS Rosebank node will be running on UPS and generator power and we do not foresee any impact on IS services. However, customer specific last-mile lines in the Rosebank area may be affected. I would rather have my line stable for last 2weeks of the month so i can get as much as possible than getting 1kb/s average and have them do maintenance the following month.

I would rather let them deliver a quality service at all time - which shouldn't even have to come into question in the first place.
 
I'm from Uitenhage and traffic from PE to where ever seem fine. Actually for the first time since the 192 -> 384 upgrade I'm running at 35-40 off the news server. This is since about 6pm last night. Got 1.7GB since.

Gona reach my tiny little 10GB cap soon. :D
 
I've managed a massive 17MB in 8Hrs.

There's no way in hell I'm gonna reach my cap by the end of the month ...
 
All i need is like 5days at the end of the month and ill be capped :P

But ye IS is being really slack
 
384 speeds all night :( and i just upgraded to 4mbit! Question, those people who are able to download, what is the max connections that you are able to make?
 
How come some guys can connect and I can't even get 0,5kb/s??
 
Ziglet, i think they are busy sorting out the news servers, cuz you should be able to get ur full speed on 4connections, as far as i know the more connections u have the more strain it puts on there server.

So i think they are limmiting everone to 4 and once that is done everone should be able to run at full speed.. I was speaking to someone who used the servers from the beggining and they said they used to get full speed on only 2 connections....

I donno.. We'll see....
 
Yea i use to use 2 connections when i used server last year, maxed out 24/7
 
They can't give everyone 4mbit speeds because the server just won't be able to handle it.If the servers has 2 100mbit connections to the internet and everyone gets 4mbit speeds,25 people will be able to download. So there should some limit to the speeds or connections. It will cost IS too much to cluster a whole bunch of servers together to give everyone 4mbit speeds, so I doubt that everone will ever be seeing 4mbit speeds on a single news server. They probably already do have a cluster of servers.

Think of it this way. For every 25 people who connect at 4mbit they need 1 server. Now if 25 people had a local only connection @ R139, they would make R3475 per server. I doubt that really covers the cost of the server and the bandwidth that the server will need. Now if you take 25 * 30gb = 750gb of news that those 25 clients will be using. That is why no-one will have 4mbit speedfs anytime soon. It will simply to cost too much to provide such speeds to everyone at once.

If we didn't have the stupid cap problem from Telkom, we could be downloading directly from international sources and very few people will need a news server.
 
I dont mind not getting 4mbit speeds but at least 1mbit, im getting 45kb/s and maybe jumps to 60kb/s :(
