Isgs Omg

I have my AGM (Annual General Meeting) tomorrow night - And i move in end of next week.

Apparently plenty of residents have put Telecoms on the Agenda - so it should be quite an interesting evening.

I'll get back to ya all with some feedback.

plz do :)

So not much to report just yet - apparently ISGS will be reviewing prices and doing a comparative breakdown against Telkom which should be interesting not sure when we will be receiving this.

There was also a resolution passed to form a telecoms sub-committee to deal with issues surrounding prices and service.

I have volunteered for this - but it will take a few weeks to get this off the ground - so stay tuned I will update everyone once we get this pricing breakdown from ISGS and then further updates when the sub-committee starts scrutinizing the pricing and service offering - what i can say was there were a lot of unhappy residents all voicing concern over the service!

Thanks plenty! that is goodish news.

I look forward to seeing what happens so i can try bring change here @ UES.

Im sure there will be quite a few bent people here too.

Did you see the reply / or lack there of on the islabs site? ... even a "we are looking into it .. and will give u a reply in 1month" would have sufficed.

I spoke to one of the guys @ amobia.com and they are willing (if they get permission from the BC) to highsite the building and give it internet as a service to the building. Maybe check what your committee says, but that could be a solution as they are pretty solid service and their price/gig is like R89 and their int is over fiber.

I doubt the BC would entertain that idea - It's a 5 year contract with ISGS, and I'm pretty sure a highsite would be in breach of that :)

I just received this email

Very interesting.... Still crap expensive too, http://www.vodacomgs.co.za/content.asp?TopLinkID=5&Level2LinkID=55&PageID=23 I guess now they don't need to drop their priced, because now they ARE using HSDPA, so they can compare HSDPA with HSDPA... No need to compare it with DSL anymore....

Oh well, I still won't be touching them, even if you pay me....

vodacomgs coming to see me on Thursday morning - more soon

Did you ever have that meeting? I used to stay in Bougain Villas and have recently moved to Villa Italia. I also refuse to make use of ISGS due to their exorbitant pricing.

Hi Guy's the meeting did not materialize - I did have the service installed, as we need a home phone, and to be able to bitch / comment about the service - I need to have used the service. (Progress on formation of a telecoms sub-committee is slow)

As yet I have not taken a Data package with VodacomGS... Because I will be applying for WiMAX tomorrow.

Currently my connectivity is very limited - But I'll post some thoughts on the service and some further possibilities in the next few days / ASAP.

Also It's clear there are more people following this thread than i thought - based on the PM's i have received :) which is encouraging !!

peace.

When this service first started it was run by InCite (not so) Smart Services. IS then bought them out and now Vodacom has taken the lions share.

The early days were terrible. There was no after-hours support, which was exactly the time I used the services and the billing department took 7 months to resolve my queries. When they offered the hard cap option at 250MB I took it immediately. About the time IS came around they got their after-hours act together and the service also started to stabilise. The technicians I had dealt with generally seemed to know what they were doing (thankfully).

I took up 3G (pre-paid) last year August and have not looked back.
VGS - 1024k - 1GB R467.30 vs. Vodacom 3G 1GB R289
VGS - 1024k - 2GB R581.30 vs. Vodacom 3G 2GB R389
VGS - 1024k - 3GB R710.00 vs. Vodacom 3G 3GB R589
If you look at these prices it was a no-brainer. Why on earth would you use VGS, which is slower and more expensive?

So while I would say their service is ok, their pricing leaves a lot to be desired.

Plenty: Do you think it would be possible to get a joint group going across the estates supplied by VGS to get some attention on the subject?

PS. How do you think you are going to get away with mounting the wimax antenna? Building fixture restrictions and all?

quick update...

It might be possible to set up some sort of group across estates - Not quite sure how this would work? any proposals?

I dont plan on asking for clearance to mount a WiMax antenna, I just intend to have it installed - There are no telkom vans that come through security -- i think it's grintek telecom or such (sub-contractors) and the antenna is not large or obtrusive, and we live in a house higher up on the estate not a flat / townhouse / complex thing... with a nice recess out of clear view - but with perfect line of site.

I'll try post further this evening off the 3G..

peace ;)

I guess a start would be to find some members on the forum from each of the estates who can engage the body corp? Or should we just bypass the BC and go straight to VGS?

Ah, if you have a house I guess you have a bit more leeway :)

Thanks for the link update.

At least someone has woken up to the fact that once you went over 3GB it was cheaper to use Telkom. They compete with ADSL all the way up to 10GB now.

I still can't understand the speed scale logic though. Example:
1GB - 384 - R199
1GB - 512 - R394 (difference R195)
1GB - 1024 - R424 (difference R30)

On the top end speed it is still cheaper to use 3G (pre-paid) up until 3GB.

I put together a little table with the costs in.

nice table there morkhans,

but why do we need the complexity... why cant we just have the same as telkom even with VGS?

i dont want 4 diff types of connections. i want 1. 1 good fastish connection with bandwidth. And if i run outa my cap i want to be able to upgrade with well priced gb!

1gb is 1gb of data... if its sent via 1mb line or smoke signal its the same size...why the price difference?
