Subtract the price of the 24 month contract itself which is probably a third of that price (I haven't bothered to look it up) - and if so, that drops to R25,424 for the handset alone

Cash price of the phone is R27,699 and the contract cheaper ?

No buying cash and going prepaid is cheaper.
Contract:
R1589 x 24 = R38136 (1gb data and 200 minutes)
Prepaid:
R27699 + R225 * 24 (Just picked Melon mobile 2gb data and 200 minutes) = R33099
Saving of R5k.
