It would appear that Mweb is blocking BitTorrent 100%

Could this be a port issue from Telkom's end? Mweb has suggested so.

Highly unlikely, Telkom does not shape traffic at layer 2. If everything else works and you've tried other isp accounts that work then it's a mweb issue.

Try https://www.frootvpn.com/ and see how you're traffic behaves before and after, report back.

MWEB is not for downloaders. Please use another ISP for that sort of thing.

MWEB is like the fine dining restaurant of ISP. Quality over quantity.

That said, I fired up a Linux distro now:

I probably will. The main reason I'm posting though is to see whether its an isolated issue or not, and if it isn't, some thing should be done whether I'm a customer or not.

All the best.

Does your VPN permit P2P traffic? How much bandwidth do you typically go through in a month? Mweb expressly forbids VPN's on their home accounts. I left them years ago so I wouldn't know if or how they enforce that rule.

But how will they know you using a vpn?

OP you can also buy any Samsung smart tv and get 1Tb of Vox adsl data free. It is pure unshaped. Better than Afrihost in my area.

I can stream from any website any time of the day. It is valid for 1 year from activation. Search mybb for the thread about it.

P2P shaping is extremely common amongst the world's ISP's. It's very easy to limit. Mweb doesn't allow the masking of traffic anyway.

P2P shaping is not really P2P shaping. It's actually prioritising important protocols like HTTP and SMTP over everything else. It's impossible to specifically shape encrypted P2P traffic because it's not possible for an ISP to know if traffic is actually P2P. That's why when ISP's try to shape P2P traffic there is always collateral damage with other non-standard protocols.

Buddy, the Mweb exodus occurred because the quality of the service was crap. Mweb had the least redundancy when problems happened, the shaping was insane, the throttling was insane, the thresholds were extremely low, the helpline was a joke, it took 2 months to cancel your account etc. There was no redeeming quality.

It's funny that you should rate Mweb and then mention usage limits in the same thought. With Afrihost I care about none of that - bandwidth is unshaped 24/7, no matter what. And if things deteriorated, I could have a new ISP the following month if I just give notice before the 25th.

If you achieve 'impossible' usage with a home connection, then perhaps they would send you a warning letter. It can only happen with a VPN.

No it wasn't. It was the uncertainty of throttle limits. Get your facts straight, please.

As someone who left Mweb during the exodus, throttling wasn't even the issue that we were complaining about. The shaping was pretty awful though. The straw that broke the camel's back was the fact that Mweb had almost no redundancy when SA suffered a major cable break. In fact, the throttling issue only came later, when Mweb had already tarnished their reputation. I distinctly remember asking why anyone was still with Mweb when the throttling issue appeared. I suppose that would have been the second exodus.

I would say it was both.

Degraded user experience due to excessive shaping on high usage accounts and uncertainty over what the limits actually were.

Mweb could have avoided all of this by simply labeling their product "high usage" instead of "uncapped".

I'm on a Business Uncapped 10MB Afrihost account. I've had no connectivity on fifa 15 online gaming, news servers or utorrent. Prior to yesterday evening, everything was 100%.

Nothing has changed on my end and browsing is still 100%.

Maybe theres a bigger issue? (i.e hoping its not just me)

MWEB is never down. There is no shaping except p2p. People left because of throttling uncertainty. Once again, please get your facts straight.

*edit*

Why I even go to these lengths of telling the truth, I don't know. I should not be telling people the truth so as to protect my incredible connection. Rather stay the hell away from MWEB. Keep the internet pure for us non abusive users!

I left Mweb because I wanted to jump on the anti throttling train.
