Hi guys,

I was hoping someone could please help me. I applied for ADSL 384 last week from Telkom and then they called to tell me it had been activated. I then signed up with Afrihost for their 5GB package. So today i went and bought the D-Link DSL-2500U router so that i could finally connect.

I have been at it now for about 5 hours (about to pull my hair out) trying to be able to browse the net. I have configured the router with all the relevant settings (Username, Password, VIC etc etc) and according to the green LED on the router itself i have a successful connection to the internet and the DSL is working! But no i still cannot browse. I verified with Afrihost that my account had been activated and they confirmed it!

I'm using Vista Home Prem 64-Bit. In the windows Network and sharing centre, it tells me that my connection is local only (no internet) and there is a red cross between the network and the internet. This is on a fresh install of vista SP2.

Please please could someone help me out. I finally get my ADSL and now i cannot use it. This is ridiculous.

Thanks in advance!!

I'm not familiar with your router but try checking a "Default Route" box somewhere in the settings. It may also be called "Default Gateway" or something similar

I dont know the router either, but few things it might be:

DHCP - Do u have that activated? Or manually set up ip address and default gateway
Def gateway should be set to the routers ip address.

NAT - Needs to be enabled, should be a checkbox somewhere.

99% that OP just didn't verify the line. Telkom inconveniently forget to tell you to do it, which can be quite a pain in the butt.

Thanks for the responses guys. I was never informed that i was supposed to "verify" (wtf is the point?) Anyway, i tried to do it now on that site but it tells me my order number does not match my directory number.... Guess I'll have to phone in the morning then about that.

Would this stop me from using the internet?!

lol

Sandman, if the OP would answer my first questions, we'd have more clarity.

But I was non Telkom ISP, self install & I verified my own line.

Yes, it was a self-install. Sorry i thought anybody who got their own modem was self-install. And to your other question no i haven't verified the line.

Guys, i am now posting on my ADSL :D It was the verification that was the prob.

I really wanted to just say thanks to all you guys who replied!!!!! You really saved my life :) If it wasn't for you guys i probably wouldn't have figured it out for a long time.

Thank you so much!

Yeah, took the Telkom operator 15 minutes to explain what he was attempting to have me do. Going through the use manual point by point (I had to stop him to correct him at certain points) I eventually clicked.

If he had just told me from the beginning I had to go to www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl to verify the line I would have been done in 30 seconds! I told him I'm dialing up, I can use the DNS but no traffic is being received he should have bloody known what I hadn't done! Grrr....

Now, I know better, I guess.
