Karmic impressions

OK...last night when I wanted to do a proper shut down for the first time after installing Karmic, I noticed that it does not shut down properly. My screen goes blank etc, but it does not actually power down. I have to press the power button and keep it in for the power to go off. Anyone else having this issue? I have a Compaq CQ60 (AMD Sempron model with Nvidia graphics)

I am not sure if this was posted already; check out Ubuntutweak ; one stop shop for anyone who wants install development versions--e.g. latest firefox, google-chrome, chromium-browser, etc. And other goodies as well.

Check it out!

Try do this:

System -> Preferences -> Startup applications

Uncheck "Power manager".

Reboot to see if it fixes it.

I had a similar problem with AMD's Cool n Quiet and the power manager. Not sure if there's a fix, but this could help you narrow it down at least.

I will give it a shot tonight when I power down again. Not a biggie...I just have to remember not to walk away after clicking shut down....otherwise my battery will be "dood soos 'n mossie" when I come back lol

OK never mind. Last night when I shut down it now powers down properly. Not sure why...as I did not change anything, apart from installing AWN. Me love Karmic :-)

I also had some issues on my daughter's PC, but it was fixed in a update they released mere hours after the launch.

So it might be that some arb update fixed your problem.

So now that Karmic has been out for a few days, what do you guys think of it now( after the first round of updates?)

I'm loving UNR more and more. I think the layout is FANTASTIC and it runs nice and smoothly on my AAO.

Really? I removed all the UNR stuff off my AAO. I might just reinstall it and give it a bash again. :D

Took a bit of getting used to, and the interface took a while to grow on me. I recommend changing the brown background (there is a really nice desert sand one included).

What didn't you like about it?

Well I didn't actually use it to begin with. I've been using ubuntu since 6.06 and saw this new fangled n00b big icon interface i was like NOOOOOOOOOOO evil, get away!

So i uninstalled it haha. But now I got it working again (what a mission :O) and its awesome haha. Guess I shouldn't have been so quick to judge. Funny, I don't have a brown background - its almost totally transparent (read: awesome). must be because I had clearlooks set as my theme when I changed back.

I agree, once you get used to it, it does make life a bit easier :)
