so with the rising petrol price I need to make a decision around keep or buying. I love driving the e36 but the petrol is costing me about R1600 monthly. I throw in R400 and get about 300 kilometers per week. only expenses has been occasional service, brakes and 2 tyres since I bought it about 4 years ago. its a 95 model with 215k on the clock.

now with the i10 I will be getting good gas mileage and the car will last longer I reckon. I do a lot of kilometers weekends.

I don't have any repayment at the moment. in fact the reason why im driving the e36 to work is because the bmw was the wife's car and she said I must get rid of it because of the petrol. I refused and we swapped cars. so in the week its the e36 and the weekend I drive the sirion which I then throw petrol in also - R150 a weekend.

its definitely cheaper than buying another car but for R800 more I can get the i10 then saving on the R1600 im currently throwing into the bmw also.

so should I buy or should I hold?

So let's get this straight, you want to spend over 100 k in order to save R 1600/ month... :wtf:

Is your current car paid off? If so, it makes no sense to get involved with monthly installments in order to save a few hundred bucks PM on fuel...

no the i10 is a 2010 with 40k on the clock. can get it for 70k.

Sorry, but that still doesn't make sense - by all means buy another car, but don't kid yourself by saying that you will be saving on monthly fuel bills - you would have to have owned the car for 4 years before that happened.

that's why I asked. im inclined to drive the e36 till the end of its dayz.

Do you really wanna give up the creature comforts for an i10? I think you could look at other means to make your car as fuel efficient as possible.

No, he'll be saving a percentage of R1600. R1600 is his fuel bill in the E36, and if he buys the i10, he'll still need fuel. I'd guess the actual saving to be between R400 and certainly no more than R800.

Don't bother that model, rather pay R20K more and get a 2012+ with 20-30K on the clock. I have the 2012 and there are some minor styling and comfort upgrades.

As for petrol consumption, well the car is light but it does not run on fumes. I get 15km/L on the open road, but 10-12km/L on short distances (eg going to the cafe).

I love the car and no regrets buying it but you are downgrading. And to drop R70K to save R100 a week on petrol is not always a wise move.

Best car is the one that you own and not owe. My wife has an Atos that is all paid up. I offered to buy her a new car this month (on credit of course) and she declined. She would rather continue to driver her Atos that she owns than an ix35 the bank owns.

No, he'll be saving a percentage of R1600. R1660 is his fuel bill in the E36, and if he buys the i10, he'll still need fuel. I'd guess the actual saving to be between R400 and certainly no more than R800.

this exactly. im putting money into the car we drive on the weekends as well. so its about R700 for the weekend's petrol depending on the amount of activity. so my thinking was the fuel saving + the weekend petrol would get really close to the repayment for the 70k.

so the wife drives the sirion mon-friday. she throws in petrol. from the Friday night I drive the sirion so then I put in petrol to last till the end of sunday. last weekend I put in R250 just for the weekend. I put in R400/week to get to work in the e36.

its a bit complicated. with my rough calculations I reckon I would be spending the same as now. but with the impending increase in the interest rate at the end of the month the picture will change again.

agree with everyone else, keep the BM.

I'm laughing at you complaining about fuel consumption, I spend R200 on 40km (fourty), fortunately I only drive once or twice a month.

:wtf: what do you drive? my sirion spoilt me on fuel consumption most likely

Fark me, that's even worse than mine... I get 40kms from R 100 :D, well that was last time i checked.Prob closer to 35kms now.

I drive a turbo superboss.

I get to do these types of things though with the R200
