Mila, you're missing the point. The ANC has no interest in changing Apartheid-era names. This is only the excuse they are using to rename things within large municipalities. These are the areas where their urban followers are concentrated - and urban support for the ANC is sinking fast.

If the ANC changes a name here and there, they can point to this as evidence of progress, spark off some racial disharmony, do the old divide-and-rule trick, and continue holding on to power. Don't fall for their excuse that they're trying to 'erase the legacy of Apartheid'. We all know what rubbish that is.

Dafaq! I hope there will be a HUGE protest if they propose that.

He was the first president. He had nothing to do with Apartheid...why remove him? I don't understand why they want to erase history? Good history...not the clap trap they keep going back on to get their voters coming in.

Fsck sakes...
 
Nothing may remain of the history of anything that has to do with white people. White people's history does not count and must be destroyed.

That is certainly the impression the ANCYL is giving here.
 
This is getting ridiculous... and they want to put up statues of Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma?? For real?? I should ask them to add a statue of myself to the list :)

These people fail to understand that history is history... whether it was good or bad... At this rate, looks like the country will have a mass "Statue Removal" movement :(... replace them with TB and JZ statues in every corner :(

He said it was in line with "our culture of continuous engagement" and definition of "South Africa's post-apartheid capital".

I guess at this rate it will be investigated to remove white heritage in the school curriculum. I won't be surprised to see a little alteration to SA history somewhere down the line during my existence. The next 20 years will be very interesting...
 
As one culture takes over, the other has to recede. If you remember men like Paul Kruger with fondness, don't expect to see his statue in this country.

That past will be largely forgotten in the next 20 years. For the good and the bad, that's the way it is.

As for Jacob Zuma - the majority of people clearly back him, what was it, 65%? Chances are we're going to be getting a few new statues of our current leaders.
