my sister is looking to buy a new laptop, she wants to use it for general use, nothing too extreme - as she is a student and studies marketing.

her budget is anywhere from 5,5k upto max 8k

any suggestions

the one she currently has her eye on is a ACER aspire 4730z, t3200 processor 2.0ghz dual, 2gb ram, and 160hdd
is this a good price?

[edit]lol, sorry rookie error 7,999 for the above

If all she wants is to go on the internet and do normal word processing etc, then perhaps a normal dual core laptop with a gig or two of ram will do. Or one that has an atom processor. My sister's got an msi wind and its a little demon.

the only reason i want her to get to get 2gb of ram, is if the time comes and she wants to upgrade to win7 then she'll have no issues. also that the laptop should last her at least for 2yrs

Netbook?

I have one for 6 months now, depends on your application purposes. good for taking it around and browse the net and chat a bit, not good for working long time (sub-size screen, sub-size keyboard although some has full size keyboards).

my sis is somewhat techo-challenged, so until she learns new skills, she'll probably only use it for projects on ms-office mostly, itunes, the net, skype and multimedia (music and video)...

...maybe a couple of games like sims 2, and the forth coming sims 3

I don't know about those netbooks. People who use them always seem uncomfortable and awkward :) I'm sure they have their place; just not as a replacement to a regular desktop/laptop.... If she is going to play the occasional game then look at something with an Nvidia/ATI card built in - they not very powerful but are OK for the occasional game.

The Lenovo N500 for 5k is a workhorse. It'l work out if you plan on using it for internet exploring and document processing
