Pity I missed the Samsung UHD special , or shall I say if only Zeus got angry earlier :)

Coming from a 50" LG Plasma , I am thinking of taking the leap towards UHD as it seems the logical step for future proofing ?

The LG 49UB830T seems like a good option budget UHD (although the refresh rate 100Hz has me sceptical), and Hirschs have them at a reasonable price. Forgive me as this whole LED/UHD/4K has me running around like a headless chicken .... but rule of thumb says higher refresh rate is better (the MCI bit I did research and it seems like marketing BS to 'up' their perceived refresh rate). If anyone has this set and can comment I would appreciate it , will go have a look at it tomorrow most likely and report.

Please don't get me wrong , I thouroughly enjoyed my plasma but I suspect it's time to look at other options as it seems the plasma units are very scarce (went around to two places today won't mention names but the sales staff looked at me funny when I asked where their plasma units were LOL). I did see a 60" LG plasma for sub R10k but this thing is a BEAST , presume if my wall mount could support my 50" plasma it would this one.

So my question really , do I make the jump with a 'future proof' TV , or stick to what I know and buy plasma again (and please I do not want to start a flame war about what is better , I know the pros and cons.) My usage will be 80% watching series , with occasional gaming on the Xbox , and maybe the odd rugga game. I do have a fairly lit living room (but can close blinds/curtains), viewing distance is about 3.5-4m. Need to make a decision by Friday as Game of Thrones is waiting (NO SPOILERS PLS! been avoiding anything GOT related the last few days).

Resolution is not going to make LCD better than plasma. If you want to upgrade, I'd suggest going for the 60" plasma while you still can. Or keep your 50" and wait for OLED, the only tech that can compete with plasma. You sit way outside the distance of perceived resolution improvement between FHD and UHD on a 50".

Anyone.

Hi, SAMSUNG 40" Smart FHD LED model 40H5303 is going for R5 990 at Game. Is this the best value for money amongst the big brands (Samsung, LG) for a smart tv under R6000? How important is the smart features anyway for somebody just watching normal tv?

Bought the same TV and very happy with it. Only difference I could find between 55LB652 and 55LB720 was the 2.0 sound vs 2.1 sound and since I use a home theater system, it would make no difference.

I am curious though, is it possible to put the latest webos software from a US model on a local TV, anyone tried it?

I thought the biggest difference was the refresh rate? 500hz vs 800hz? At least that's what I recall when I bought it.

That looks like a good deal. I'm in the market for a TV, how is this panel? I had the 51" 5 series Samsung Plasma previously and i loved it!

NVM, I already bought it. I did some research quickly and that price is R1500 cheaper than anyone else selling the TV. All the reviews of the TV seem to be VERY good, so it's a no brainer.

It's such a pity that companies have decided to stop production of Plasma TV's, the picture quality on them is incredible! My friend has a 65" 6 Series Samsung LED TV and the blacks on it still don't look as good as my old plasma. Also, LED TV's have a very documentary look about them, I don't know what it is but it looks fake. Plasma's colour is warmer and seems to perform much better with SD content and sport. Only caveat is that the brightness and day time performance isn't that great on plasma, luckily I have a dark entertainment room and mostly watch TV at night.

You're preaching to the converted here, pal. I did on this forum for many years, and had much success, as many will attest to.

But the power of marketing always wins. People are interested in keeping up with the Joneses (who know nothing about TVs but have money to burn). They lose logical thought when in Makro comparing TVs under thousands of watts of lighting from close viewing distances, forgetting that their home is different. With a salesman feeding false information, who is mostly interested in targets and commission anyway.

False terms to make buyers think the tech is new (there is no such thing as an LED TV, it's an LCD TV), inflated numbers like Hz refresh rates and dynamic contrast ratios (which no one ever makes use of), dynamic/torch modes trickery under bright lighting, etc.

It's extremely sad, but what's sadder is that even technical minds, particularly around here, still think LCD is better.

Further, they think that plasma is finished because it's worse.

Worse for profits for the manufacturers, is where it's worse.

A sad time for consumers, picture quality, and bang for buck worldwide.

I don't think this model is a Smart..?

No SMART, no 3D.

A blessing in disguise as far as SMART goes, if the PS51F5500 (previous 5 Series plasma) and other LCDs are anything to go by. Very slow, sometimes unresponsive, etc.

I'm sure it will still have HD media playback via USB port.

You're much better off with a dedicated media player or HTPC.

Does anyone own the Samsung PA60H5000 60" Plasma TV that can provide some real world feedback on this TV?

Seems like a really good deal.

I still love my 51" Samsung plasma. I think it's 3 years old now and still looking fantastic.

Maybe time for an upgrade to the 60", hmmm ....
