Does anyone have any opinions on the LG 55LB652, currently going for R11800 at Makro? http://www.makro.co.za/electronics/lg-55-140cm-3d-smart-full-hd-led-tv-273662EA

I bought this exact TV two weeks ago and it is Amazing! The only problem I have with it is the sound quality isn't the greatest (but this only occurs on some channels for some reason) - but I am going to buy a sound bar which will sort that problem out - other than that I love it. Use it mainly for Netflix, Plex and XBOX One gaming.

You won't be disappointed.

Thanks weelzSA, I hope there are some left this weekend - too late :).

I couldn't wait and bought it yesterday. I'm very impressed with the LG 55LB652. I bought it for the LED quality and thought the Smart TV would not be of much use. I am glad to say that I was wrong. It could play almost anything I threw at it over the network, except flac audio and one blueray avi. It played multiple file formats and all the mkv's I tried.

It played from a 64GB usb flash drive and also from my 2TB NTFS harddrive. Other content I streamed from XBMC and also from my Android phone. It also sends the audio perfectly to my amp via optical out.

@Terumo, when you switch on your DSTV, AVR, TV, does it default to ARC?

I have all my devices plugged into my AVR, and the AVR plugged into the HDMI ARC. When I switch on the TV, the sound from my DSTV comes through fine, but after a few seconds, the TV takes over the ARC and then obviously there's no more sound. I then have to manually switch the input on my AVR to get the DSTV sound back.

ARC works fine when I want to play YouTube, etc., it's just on startup that it kicks in when it shouldn't, as the input is set to DSTV. So in effect, with I switch on my TV, I have DSTV picture & sound for around 5-7s, then I only have picture. Then I have to manually set the input on the AVR to DSTV so that the sound overrides the silent ARC

If my AVR is off, there's obviously no picture/sound on the TV, but even if I switch on the AVR after I've switched on the TV, the same thing happens.

Yip. Mine does exactly the same thing. I usually switch to another hdmi input and switch back and the AVR then picks the CBL/SAT that my DSTV runs on.

arrrgh, so irritating... but I suppose that's the way ARC works...

Yeah it really is a great TV! And the picture quality is amazing.

Did you by any chance try the sound from the TV speakers? I want to go and test one this weekend to see the sound quality as mine is very low - have to put it up to 75 when watching DSTV (some channels) and also on Netflix have to go to around 55 but the XBOX One is fine.

I am going to buy a sound bar this weekend but just want to make sure it is not a problem with my actual TV but a problem with the TV in general.

Any recommendations, are they any deals on UHD tvs, are they worth it?

Just bought the 50 inch version (LG 50LB652T ) over the weekend, and coming from a Samsung LCD tv, I was also very disappointed with the sound from the tv speakers. Just like you, I have to turn the volume up to about 80 for most DSTV channels, had to ramp it all the way up to 100 and full volume on decoder when the wife put the extractor on (open plan kitchen/ lounge).

Just read somewhere that there's a Sound Optimisation setting that needs to be set for either wall mount or tv unit, will try that out tonight and see if it makes a difference, as I think mine was set to Off.

My cousin has the older 47 inch LG (47LA6210), and I actually prefer the older UI compared to the one mine has, other than those 2 things, really enjoying the tv.

I changed the setting to "Stand Mode" but there was no difference. I spoke to a sales guy at the LG Store and he said there have been many complaints about the sound quality. I ended up buying a LG soundbar for R2000 and it is worlds apart.

Yeah the older version UI was nice but have gotten use to the new one - just wish they gave me a "dumb" remote as well - my old LG came with the smart and dumb remote.

But end of the day I love my new TV and have no complaints anymore :)

I see Makro is advertising the Hisense 55K390PAD (led) and Hisense 50K680 uhd tv's for R9 990. I am considering pulling the trigger on one of them.

Currently I am leaning towards the 55". I have a plasma 51" in my living room. If I go the 55" route, then the plasma would be used for gaming (xbox one and wii for my son).
I don't want to pay more than R10k for a tv.

Lighting is no issue in both rooms. Main tv is used for dstv (mainly sports), streaming and watching downloaded content.

Viewing distance in living room is 4m and in games room about 2-2,5m.

Also tried Stand Mode and didn't make a difference.

Gonna try my cousins dumb remote, if it works I'm taking it :D His one is still sealed, didn't even put batteries in it.

Where did you get the sound bar from? And what's the model number?

Bought it at Makro as everywhere else was sold out and LG are not making this model anymore. It was the last "dumb model" they made and the one that will replace it is the same specs ect but now with Smart Features and a price tag of R3500 - I paid R1899 for mine as I dont need the smart features.

It was the LG NB-2540 - best thing you can do for the TV, thats if you can find one.

Thanks buddy, will see if I can find it in stock. House and Home have it listed on their site for R1999.

if it's not too much to ask, would you mind uploading a photo of how it looks installed with the tv?

That 55K390PAD looks identical to the LG 55LB652, even the stand looks identical!!!!

Not sure about the Hisense UHD tv but another option is the LG like I bought, the 50LB652 which is also R9999 at Makro. But I guess if you don't have a problem with the Hisense brand (I don't but unfortunately the wife does, else I would have bought the 55K390PAD), then I say go for the Hisense 55 inch.

I am after some advice on the best LED or Plasma TV in the 55 to 60 inch range for R12k - R15k. Picture quality is more important than features like 3D or SmartTV. Watch a lot of sport so possibly need higher Hz? Not interested in Sinoteq or Hisense.

Please could you advise on your views here and if anyone is aware of any specials let me know.

Plasma does not exist any more.

If you can find one with FHD, buy it immediately.
