LCD and Plasma Bargains and Discussions thread

Ha ha ha. True. I did try, but my arguing skills are a little lacking. Maybe you can educate me ?
It would be like playing a broken record. It has been said and explained etc in this very thread a lot of times, and I hope Im not coming accross as rude.

I think in the last 100 -150 posts you will see that most people prefer these plasmas. I am not an expert in these things but I am almost certain I read here that the plasmas are not prone to burn in anymore.

The things your friends are talking about is old technology which had burn in etc. If you have a room with not much light you will enjoy the plasma very much.

I cant recall if ever reading on the forum of one person that was unhappy with their Samsung plasma purchase.

Does anyone still make plasma screens?
Or are they finally dead?

How can the most obviously superior tech die?

And the one where everyone was buying ! It's a mystery :/

But in seriousness - there's no other makers, right?
Last was Samsung and LG?

I think Samsung is the last, got a few ED panels to shift off their stocks but don't think they are being made anymore.

Plasma tech is dead. Awesome tech but dead. OLED and nano crystal tech is the new in thing. We can only hope prices will come down on the new tech

Just reading a write up on my LED - that old horrible grey dull thing that people are advised to avoid :/ Best 1080p TV of 2014 too.

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/ue46h7000-201407153854.htm

Tri-dimensional material looked wonderfully detailed with abundant texture and depth on the UE-46H7000, courtesy of full HD 3D resolution afforded by the active-shutter glasses (ASG) system

The Samsung UE46H7000 rendered a deep shade of blacks by LED LCD standards, with its native black level coming in at 0.04 cd/m2 on a 4×4 ANSI chequerboard pattern once we fixed peak white luminance to 120 cd/m2 as we always do in all our TV reviews to maintain a level playing field. Backlight uniformity on our review sample was supremely impressive too, with no clouding or backlight bleed in sight to detract from the image depth and immersiveness.

We achieved excellent results throughout, with delta errors (dEs) never exceeding the humanly perceptible threshold of 3 across all our measurements, which means that real-world content won’t be tinged with any visible inaccuracy.

the superb SPVA panel on the Samsung UE-46H7000 makes it arguably the best 1080p television that money can buy among 2014 models, thanks largely to its outstanding black-level response and contrast performance.

but we think its picture quality edges out the step-up curved H8000 series due to the former’s slightly deeper and more uniform blacks.

Ignorant much? Costs more to manufacture and ship/transport. LCD is far more profitable, it also looks better in Makro, therefore people who know nothing about TVs walk out thinking it's better and telling their friends.

Plasma > LCD. Fact. One only needs to understand self illumination vs backlit, to understand.

The only tech that can equal or hopefully improve on plasma, is OLED. Fat chance the public will be seeing cheap OLED soon.

But PP, what if OLED doesn't take off?
What if there's a second conspiracy and the sales people convince patrons not to buy OLED?

We've seen what an influence they have ; it's like mind control and the Dions salesman dictates the way the global market embraces technology :(

Don't forget the evil Makro and Game ones they are so good they somehow managed to singlehandedly stop production across the globe. All by using magic lights.

Of course it'll take off, just like LCD did (and even more so LED, yet it is the mostly the same tech yet most consumers think it's different).

With the power of marketing, advertising and ignorance, manufacturers can make sure any reasonably good product takes off, to a degree.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

This is pathetic. Why do you feel a need to turn facts into jokes like this?

Let's start right at the beginning so that otherwise reasonable people do not get fooled.

Do you view your TV from 2m and have thousands of watts of lighting in the room?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

Lupus does ; he obviously has the same worry :/

What I mean is that these powerful people push the technology of their choice - what what is the best. Last time, they wiped out an entire technology by packing the inferior product.

What if this time, they back 4k LED as opposed to the better OLED? They'll wipe out production

Of course I was lying about not understanding. The problem is that it is you who sees the truth as conspiracy. Because you need to warp things so much as it's the only way you end up believing yourself anyway.

Don't blame salespeople. There are many honest ones out there. When it comes to TVs, you find them in the dedicated AV stores. One can expect them to have the knowledge. My experience is true of this, in every dedicated AV store I can remember, there were salesmen who advised plasma and preferred it themselves i.e. what they have at home. Or salesmen who wanted to show consumers demos in a test room so that they really get their money's worth.

Blame the people in power who rely on 'dishonest' salespeople to regurgitate mistruths, in order to make those companies more profit. Salespeople getting underpaid who would do everything to sell products that earn them commission so they can get by easier.

Consider the proportion of people shopping at dedicated AV stores, the ones equipped with the best knowledge and advice, the shops you find in your upmarket centres. Perhaps 5% of all consumers, because they're likely to have the money and not be scraping through to make it through the month.

And then consider the proportion of people shopping at Massmart stores, perhaps 90% because everyone's out for a bargain to eke out a living, and the kind of information they're being fed, as well as the experience they're having standing at aisle viewing distance under thousands of watts of lighting. As well as TVs set to torch mode (high brightness/contrast). Who lives like this? Whose TV rooms are like this?

No ones'.

Then consider now that 90% of consumers who have experienced these "amazing bright crisp LED TVs" which are "brighter and much better than plasma" and even "better than LCD", now talk to their friends, family, the internet... Suddenly you have 90% of false information up against 5 - 10% of true information. But because the 90% have got more voices, more unknowing people believe them...

And there sit the enthusiasts, who know a thing or two, deeply understand the technologies, have owned many, etc., pulling their hair out because they are outnumbered by lies.

Massmart stores are the fast food stores of the retail world. Would you trust someone who sells fast food or who frequents their restaurants when it comes to food and cooking?

Of course you wouldn't. Yet you have no problem doing it when it comes to TVs.

You are an educated man, Dolby. You disappoint me so much.

I was partly causes trouble because I had a few minutes to argue - I agree with you, partially.

I disagree that one technology was pushed over another because of sales, lights etc
I disagree with you on IR being a non factor or slight no annoyance
I disagree with the IQ on the higher end sets - they're far, far closer than what you imagine.

Remember I've also had both technologies and agree on some instances, but not all. I chose an LCD/LED over the plasma as offered many more pros than cons.

How can you possibly disagree with this? Especially about lights? I struggle to get my brain around it.

Sales. LCD (or marketed as LED) has been some of the most aggressively advertised technology I can remember in my existence. Everywhere you go, everything you see, is LED. As far as I'm concerned, they are just bright and use less power - I am glad for that.

Lights. Are the stores where the majority of people do their shopping not brightly lit? To me, they are a helluva lot brighter than the lighting of average (by average I mean most) living rooms, also considering average living rooms are probably most often used at night. Do these stores turn down the lights to try and replicate each consumer's home viewing conditions?

I need you to explain clearly how you, or anyone, can possibly disagree with each of these.

Separate issue here, and virtually non existent on modern plasmas, you cannot use your 7 year old plasma experience here.

I disagree with the IQ on the higher end sets - they're far, far closer than what you imagine.

I completely agree. Why should I care though when plasma is better and cheaper?

Why should I care when consumers are lied to? Who have an opportunity to buy something that is in fact better, for cheaper?

What you don't understand is that LCD/LED-LCD simply cannot beat plasma. That is the bottom line here, it is dismal that you go on about LCD and parade the death of plasma, when it's all based on mistruths through marketing gimmicks, as well as having to spend far more than what most can afford.

Remember I've also had both technologies and agree on some instances, but not all. I chose an LCD/LED over the plasma as offered many more pros than cons.

Yes, 7 year old plasma, possibly even 8 years old now. And yes, I completely understand you like to watch TV with a north-facing sliding door in front of the TV.

Well, now that we have that out the way - this quite decent :

http://www.dionwired.co.za/televisions/lg-60-uhd-smart-led-tv.html (LG 60" UHD) - plus if I understand the models, a series 8 which is quite high end?

It is a stunning TV. I have never been an LG fan when it comes to TVs but this is better than the Sammy HU7000 series UHD TVs imo. I compared 480p, 720p, 1080p and 4K clips on the 55" version of both brands. I spent an hour+ fiddling with the settings. If the 60" was this price I would have bought it. My other 3 TVs I've bought in the last 4 years were 2 sammy plasmas and a series 7 sammy LED. This blows then away.
