LCD and Plasma Bargains and Discussions thread

Anybody find the picture of the Ps51f5500 soft? I've been using a newly purchased Samsung 40" 5 series LED for the last 2 weeks and am struggling with the plasma being soft and less vivid/bright. Or could it be that the TV is problematic?

what level is your Cell Light and contrast at?

You might also have it in Movie mode, put it in standard and tweak the settings.

I'm in standard mode and I just increased cell light to 16 which improved things and i left everything else as default. What's your settings like?

Standard mode.
Display has mostly default settings except cell light is at 12 or something at this point - i'll bump this up slowly while "breaking in" the set for the first 100 hours.

I could tell you what my settings are exactly, but I'm new at this myself, so it would be pointless.
The colors on my set look amazing though, so I'm not TOO worried about a calibration at this stage anyway.

Also, are you talking about the display in the day? because LED will be brighter than plasma during the daytime in a brightly lit room afaik...

This, use Standard and tweak the rest to your liking.

Movie mode will give the best picture quality for movies/cinema stuff (calibrated in accordance with the film industry), but you should be watching in dim/dark conditions.

I don't know about you guys but movie mode looks a bit washed out to me...

Well on my 55F8000 movie mode is the closest to reference levels, so I use that and just do minor tweaks. The reviewers had the same findings.

Plasma > LCD LED. Nuff said.

I'm very happy with the picture quality. It's not as bright as my 40" Samsung LED in the bedroom but the picture quality is better and the colour reproduction is superior. It doesn't deal well with bright conditions without a bump up on the cell light and the reflective display doesn't help. I am however happy with my decision over the LED equivalent after weighing up all the factors.

I'm surprised they never hypnotised you?

Rumour has it that salesman can make you do anything they want just by tell you. They've persuaded the entire globe to LCD/LED using this technique ... and it's quite scary!

I go into shops in groups now

Salesmen use "clever tricks" like putting the expensive TVs on torch mode/etc to confuse the masses.

But hey, if you think LED is better because everyone and his dog has one, go ahead. I personally don't think Brightness = Picture Quality.
I look at blacks/color reproduction/contrast/motion blur handling/uniformity/SD Source Handling/viewing Angle/etc

Yeah LED might be thinner, lighter, use less energy, etc but that does nothing for picture quality

Guys I have been away from this thread for months... And it's still the same :D

Then it isn't me ;)

Maybe the same debates - but I hardly come on this section anymore.

Unless I'm feeling down ... it also makes me chuckle reading Postmansplasmaposts and I leave in a better mood ;)

These inane ramblings can be summed up by shops displaying TVs in several thousand watt-bright parts of warehouses with aisle viewing distances, and not understanding why the masses buy what's brightest and what salesmen push, because it generates more revenue for their masters who put the roof over their heads...

To turn this into salesmen "hypnotising" people and making them do "anything they want" is completely undermining the serious issue and showing complete ignorance and lack of understanding to both technology and fellow human beings whom should be able to purchase with all the facts in an unbiased environment.

I was turning a very serious and sombre situation into a joke and mockery - It is no laughing matter and one that needs to be addressed with immediate effect.

You have a crusade to expose all the tricks salespeople use - the shop light trick, the inferior source trick, the remuneration trick and the dynamic mode trick - so that one day the world can be as one and we can watch our plasma screens (albeir, in the dark) in peace and harmony

I apologise, Postman.

I apologise, Postman.

They are more forced conditions than they are tricks. They certainly do trick the layman by swaying them towards a certain technology. This can work both ways - bright lighting -> LCD, dim lighting -> plasma.

1. Ship lighting

No one has the sort of lighting in their home that Game/Makro does. Therefore it is the incorrect environment to make accurate judgement.

Impossible to disagree with this.

2. Inferior source

I don't mention this, if anything it would benefit plasma because it handles lower quality sources better. Homes generally have one (high quality) source that is not split to multiple outputs/TVs.

Impossible to disagree with this.

3. Remuneration

There is more incentive to sell LCD because profits are higher. It goes back to lighter weight meaning lower shipping costs, and even further back to lower production costs.

It is marketed and pushed more in advertising because of this.

Impossible to disagree with this.

4. Dynamic mode

This is used because the brightest TV under bright viewing conditions is more likely to sell than a dim TV under bright viewing conditions. The reality is that the majority of people watch in non bright, dim viewing conditions, often after hours. People generally watch movies with the lights dimmed/off, etc.

Dynamic mode leads to the least picture quality.

Calibration and recorded levels of this and that are calculated using the complete opposite of dynamic mode (movie mode).

Impossible to argue with this.

So, where is the issue?

Still the old same. Soon it will be done and dusted as more plasma producers fold then I wonder what postman pot will do?

Oh I remember now, he will punt 720P and distance tables as real HD is not a wanted feature in this world. :D
