LCD and Plasma Bargains

I think you're the one trying to confuse the OP the whole time. I am pulling these from tech-sites, Samsung press releases, basically everywhere. Do some searches. In any case it doesn't matter.

I also just pointed to the fact. I made no comparism between the two. Which one is better will depend on what he'll be using it for

Suffice to say, anything 720p and below (and even 1080p depending on the viewer) and the 4 Series plasma will beat the 5 Series LCD at sheer PQ. Only time it doesn't is when it comes to resolution.

Series 4 beating Series 5? Fancy that!

Have a nice day. :)

To save us both some time.

Our oppinions differ.

I disagree. I believe PQ on the LAD550 is better than the PS4X0. I do agree PS4X0 handles SD better.

You disagree with me. You believe LAD550 only beats the PS4X0 when it comes to resolution. Thus, you believe it is preffered only if you have to have the option to enjoy FHD. You believe FHD on PS4X0 still looks amazing.

I disagree. I think you lose a lot of detail with FHD on the PS4X0. I get into the inforior 1024x768 resolution.

You disagree because its better for SD but also handles FHD very well.

I disagree and tell you my LAD550 handles SD and sport very well.

You disagree, Roman comes in, some other people argue as well...

And on and on and on it goes.

Thus, I'm not getting into the argument. Its my opinion, leave it, you won't convince me otherwise so don't try and argue with me. Tell other members about what you think and they can make up their own mind.

Thanks Tim, i was beginning to feel like the child in the middle of a parental spat there :p Thanks for summing things up in your post :)

You base your arguments on resolution, and not picture quality - which is what I base mine on. Therefore, anything that is true 720p (1280x720) and 1080p, you will say 5 Series LCD is better, simply because there are more pixels. This, after time and time again, ±30 forumites have bought Series 4 plasma over Series 5 LCD for everything 720p and below. Some have even noted that 1080p looked better on 720p plasma than the 1080p LCD, a testament to the fact that the plasma offers better picture quality. So you can see how I try to present a more objective argument, based on numbers of actual forumites sharing their findings (and purchases) here.

Never denied loss of detail. However one must understand how viewing distance plays a role with 1080p. Like I said, if you need 1080p, you need 1080p. It really depends on which you value more - resolution or picture quality. And whether resolution will even play a role from one's viewing distance (for 1080p the guidelines are 32" = 1m, 40" = 1.5m, 50" = 2m).

No chance anyone in their right mind would buy entry level LCD for SD and sport. Your saying how good it is is extremely subjective considering the immense numbers on my side, not to mention the fact that you are painting an inaccurate picture to potential buyers. While it may be "fine" for yo uat soccer and other slow sports, compare it to a plasma as we've all done and you'll see the difference. Then compare golf and tennis on entry LCD vs entry plasma...

Summary:

1080p, computer work = entry LCD
>720p, SD, movies, sport, gaming = entry plasma

Here we go again. Why do you have such issues with people who have a different opinion than you?

So you've said over and over. And again, the picture quality of my LN46D550 is great, I think its better than the Series 4 Plasma. No matter how much you try and argue with me that won't change. If you think otherwise then great, but don't tell me what to think.

Therefore, anything that is true 720p (1280x720) and 1080p, you will say 5 Series LCD is better, simply because there are more pixels.

That's not what I'm basing my argument on. The blacks, contrast and colours on the TV are great. I prefer contrast and colours of the LCD over the picture of the Plasma. But sure, it doesn't have the blacks. I guess that's preferences and any opionion about this is subjective.

This, after time and time again, ±30 forumites have bought Series 4 plasma over Series 5 LCD for everything 720p and below.

So you keep saying. But prices for the LCD have come down a lot since then. 32" for 3500, 40" for 5000 and 46" for 8000. And more and more people here seem to be buying them too.

I don't see any of those forumites in here supporting your argument. All the people on here I have come across (besides you) mostly use their HD Ready Plasma for SD and 720p content.

So you keep saying and so I keep agreeing. Sport will look better on the Plasma. But you make it sound like its unbearable on a 5 Series LCD. And believe me, its not. It handles fast motion very well.

How am I painting an inaccurate picture to potential buyers? And why does it bother you so much that I don't share your opinion lol

Sorry, my bad! Is there another thread where this can be discussed. I enjoy reading the different opinions though and trying to learn about plasma vs lcd before i buy.

i think its the general discussion thread?

Here we go again. Why do you have such issues with people who have a different opinion than you?

Huh? I don't. It's called a debate.

I have issues when people twist the truth, re your posts about Series numbers.

So you've said over and over. And again, the picture quality of my LN46D550 is great, I think its better than the Series 4 Plasma. No matter how much you try and argue with me that won't change. If you think otherwise then great, but don't tell me what to think.

And so is the picture quality of my 5 Series LCD. But it doesn't touch my Series 4 plasma when it comes to >720p stuff. Do you own both techs? Both 5 Series LCD and 4 Series plasma?

That's not what I'm basing my argument on. The blacks, contrast and colours on the TV are great. I prefer contrast and colours of the LCD over the picture of the Plasma. But sure, it doesn't have the blacks. I guess that's preferences and any opionion about this is subjective.

Plasma has a higher static contrast ratio IIRC. Obviously which leads to better PQ. If you prefer washed out & unnatural colours, then that's your opinion. Many people do.

So you keep saying. But prices for the LCD have come down a lot since then. 32" for 3500, 40" for 5000 and 46" for 8000. And more and more people here seem to be buying them too.

Because it's true. I've been doing the rounds here for almost a year. You popped up 2 months ago. Obviously plasma owners mostly feel less of a need to defend their purchases.

Don't see how it's relevant but yes, prices of LCDs have come down which is fantastic. Then again so have plasmas.

I don't see any of those forumites in here supporting your argument. All the people on here I have come across (besides you) mostly use their HD Ready Plasma for SD and 720p content.

See above. I've been here for ±1 year reading everything that's been said. You popped up 2 months ago. I have personally helped ±15 forumites in their purchase via PM, let alone those helped in threads. Your saying that because you don't see enough people sharing my view point = my view is less credible = fail.

Pop in here - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/345497-What-s-there-to-know-about-tvs - some plasma owners there I've never even seen before showing face.

So you keep saying and so I keep agreeing.

Okay.

Not once have I said it's unbearable. I have spent quite a bit of time watching sport in front of a 40" Series 5 LCD. More time has been spent watching sport on Series 4 plasma though. So we agree once more.

How am I painting an inaccurate picture to potential buyers? And why does it bother you so much that I don't share your opinion lol

Because entry plasma wins at everything >720p. ;) Ask the experts. PM Dolby, TYR, etc. Entry LCD should only be considered if 1080p is a must, computer work is a must (static images), or if the room is bright.

It's called a debate until you repeat the same crap over and over and over and over again, to the same person. That's when its starts becoming pathetic. And for that very reason I am out of here. I frankly don't care nearly enough about what other people buy or don't buy as you do, to waste my time arguing with you. Face it, all you do is look for points to argue.

Don't bother wasting your time replying and defending your position, telling me how this is just a debate, how I am subjective, give false information and so on as I'll be clicking unsubscribe and won't bother reading it. I don't care what you think, I don't care if you disagree with me. You're the kind of person who argues for the sake of arguing. You make this debate seem like a decision which your life depends on, trust me its not.

It actually comes across like you are the one defending the purchase of your plasma :)

I know that you are happy with your plasma, and many others are happy too. Peoples opinions of TVs vary wildly - I was a total plasma fanboy until I actually bought one!

As I mentioned before, the plasma I had, did have a slight (and it was very slight) edge over my LCD for low bitrate SD video (it sort of smooths out the MPEG compression artifacts). The problem is that most of the SD channels on DSTV are 4:3, and to prevent image retention, you should stretch those images to fill the screen, which distorts the image (makes everyone look fat) :( So, in my opinion, if you want to buy a new widescreen TV, and you want to watch sport, then an HD PVR is essential... and then one of the main advantages of the plasma (better low bitrate SD) is no longer so important.

I really think that anyone who already has a DSTV subscription and is buying a widescreen HD TV should include an HD PVR in their purchase.

The guy from Cats got back to me and tells me that they do have one display 42C430 for R3999. Said it's probably been on display for about 20 days. So rather that or a new 43D450 for R4999?

for that price ill take the newer model rather
tell them to make it R3k for the display model...

I posted this opn another thread but no response so hopefully someone here might reply..
I just went to look at the PS43D450 at Game. The plasma is worse off in connectivity options compared to the LA40D550 (only 2 HDMI and 1 USB, no ethernet) but it does have enough inputs for me to cope...
And importantly it doesn't seem to have the "colour edge/fringe" that personally bugs ME on the LA40D550 so I'm thinking of exchanging it BUT the picture (a divx file) also seemed "grainier" on the plasma than I have been experiencing on the LCD in the past few days - this as I see it is either due to the bigger size OR could it be the store settings? I don't want to exchange it and lose the good price I paid for the LCD only to be worse off..
Opinions please?

<snip>

And how is what you're doing any different?

Pot kettle black methinks. :/

Cheerio.

Not :D

I have R5000, I want a 40 inch Full HD LCD tv, brands I will take into consideration are Samsung, Sony or LG. Anyone know if there are any bargains to be had at the moment?

Best I've seen so far is the Samsung at Game for R5499, BUT, the wife will not budge on the extra R500 sadly :(

Pity you missed the LA40D550 at R4,999.

Sure you need full HD? What you going to be using it for?

It actually comes across like you are the one defending the purchase of your plasma :)

I understand how it may come across. The main reason I would say is because of the legacy older plasmas have left in peoples minds where they suffered image burn, low lifespan, high electricity etc. Because of this some people will completely avoid plasma.

Other reasons are that I am a sports fanatic and I enjoy SD TV. Also HD TV and other content. So ultimately plasma suited me best.

Will read rest of your post later.

R3,999 is too much considering it cost R4,499 new recently.

Try get it cheaper. Demo is a good option IMO as the plasma has been tried and tested to have no faults, has also been run in so you don't have to.
