hey nicci
id go with the samsung for 3500
for the same reasons mentioned by pp

if you can stretch your budget, id also suggest a 42"plasma

i havent heard good things bout the cheaper sets
sinotec might be an option, but the same guy telling you to get one is getting a refund himself??
and iirc he wants to get a samsung now....mmm, just saying
either way you cant go wrong with the above ;)

Hey Rodga,

The thing is I cant stretch my budget. Im limited to the max. And the Telefunken sounds like a nice deal and a nice big TV for the same price as other smaller ones. I kinda know telefunken, and its a well known name right? What is the actual diff between lcd and plama (lehmans terms pls). IF you only had limited money would you also go with the Telefunken then?

For R3k that Telefunken is good value yes and 3 year in store warranty, not too shabby!!! Go for it!!

If you been following the running battles between PostmanPot and Dolby you'll know the differences between LCD and Plasma are mostly subjective.

lol ok thanks Sandman :) lol I havent followed this thread so not sure about the differences haha! But thanks for the heads up on the Telefunken - will get that one then!

the new telefunkens are not the same as the old ones we all know
even tho its smaller, id still get the samsung
youll get a better panel
better processors
built in media player *(not sure if the telefunken has this)

dont get the telefunken
but maybe go to a store and test them both before you buy and make up your own mind

Thanks Rodga. Unfortunately I dont have more to spend - I only have limited money, and as my tv is broken and really in need of a new one I was thinking that one. The guarantee is also very nice. What do you mean with processors and panels? I just kinda need a tv to watch my dstv on - nothing from usbs and stuff (dont know how that work anyways).

Stay away from cheap sets. 2+ years ago I would have suggested Sinotec on a budget, however these cheap sets simply don't offer as much value as they used to. Now they're only 10 - 15% cheaper than the well known brands, to me that means there is no point in taking the inferior set.

At an absolute last resort, consider Hisense and Sinotec.

If you can spend R3,000, surely you can pluck another R500 somewhere? Sell something you don't use any more. :p

If you were just watching some movies and series, then a cheap brand would be OK. However, the branded sets like Samsung and LG use much better image processing and LCD panels which means better colours and blacks, viewing angles, motion handling, handling of low quality sources especially SD TV (normal DSTV)...

Nicci, 1 month ago when the Samsung/LG/Sony 32" were R4,500 - R5,000, I would have suggested Hisense/Sinotech. Now that the Samsung we've mentioned is R3,499, one cannot possibly recommend a Hisense/Sinotech any longer.

If you don't believe us, take a flash drive with a movie on it and test on the cheapies and Samsung. Wait, good luck even getting USB ports that play media on the cheapies... :D

32" is a massive anti climax though PP. If you coming from a 74cm set, 32" is barely an upgrade...

+1 - Even my 40" LCD looked minute after a few weeks.

It's taken me longer to get bored of my 50", time for a 60 me thinks :D

Ok, I am back from the shops :( I am utterly confused now. All the Game Shops were sold out on the Telefunken one, so I couldnt see the screen and stuff. But, all the tv's even lg and samsung looks so blurred etc. Is it because it was not tuned in properly? So, as a last resort went to Hi-Fi Corporation - and they had the Samsung 3 Series there for R2999. It was also 32". All the tv's at hi-fi corp looks much crisper and clearer than the same ones at Game.

Now, my predicament, the Telefunken is 37" VS the Samsung 3 Series 32". The 3 Series does not have a usb port, but the Telefunken has. The samsung is HD Ready and the Telefunken is Full HD. I am going to have the tv in my room - so its in front of my bed. About 70cm from my bed, and then i will sit in the bed to watch - so i guess its about 2,5 - 3m away from the tv, maybe the 32" wont be as blurry then as the 37"? Will the 37" be blurry if i sit about 3m from it or not really?

I really really cant go more than R2999 - i have scraped by everything lol. Unless I wait I suppose another month :s

Anyone would be mad to take the older Samsung 32" 3 Series at R2,999 over the brand new Samsung 32" 5 Series (with USB media player) for R3,499!

They look pixelated because the feed is low quality, also because entry level LCDs aren't particularly good at displaying SD stuff. But the LA32D550 at R3,499 is your best bet!

Hmm, so I got conned - the guy at the hi fi said its the the samsung is top of the range and at a very good price!!! MAD!!! Ok, so where is this Samsung 5 Series for R3499? I never saw it when i went.

I see its available till September. I think I will wait then to get that one. You sure its better than the Telefunken yes? Is the screens (32 VS 37) a big size difference or not really?

100% sure. SD TV will be more distorted on the 37" due to the size.

If you want bigger, and you are prepared to save, then go up to entry 42" plasma...

Dad and his mum went to do the shopping and picked up a 42" Samsung, will post more details later but they paid R4499.00 @ Makro, only get it running fully during the course of the week however :) but thank you to PP and everyone that was involved in helping to make the decision.

I do however think Makro overcharged for the HD PVR2P is it @ R1499.00 O_O, anycase lets see how it all goes, look out for small feedback during the week.

Regards,

Yuu

Glad to have helped. That's the 42" plasma.
