D490 is 3D ready I think.

Definitely a no brainer.

Why plasma btw?

Damn that is a sweet price. Is that D450 fhd?

I reckon I'm off to makro in the am to exchange my faulty sinotec for a D450....

Mmmmmm not a deal breaker but how much does the fhd variant retail for? Any idea PP? And model? D490 51"?

D490 is the 3D Ready variant of the new 4 Series. Not sure what the lesser features are.

PS51D550 is the FHD one, goes for just over R10k.

If your sources don't exceed 720p, then it probably isn't.

One of the only reasons to get it would be being future proof to an extent.
Yeah, that's the thing. I'm going to use the set in conjunction with my Mede8er, mostly 720p with the occasional 1080p but not enough to justify a R3.5k premium.

And then there is the common held notion that the difference between 720p and 1080p is negligible...

Arg, anyway, will see what's available, wouldn't mind getting a fhd outgoing model if they have for R8k..

The outgoing FHD model, PS50C550, is about R8,999 - R9,999 now. Heard it's quite a problematic one though.

same reason i told my cousin to get it
doesnt have a ps3 or any other hd sources
3d is nice to have, but then you still need the glasses

It's HD Ready/720p, 1365x768.

Huh? you recently said its 1024*768?

LN46D550 is 8k at Game atm.

Anyone would be mad to take the older Samsung 32" 3 Series at R2,999 over the brand new Samsung 32" 5 Series (with USB media player) for R3,499!

They look pixelated because the feed is low quality, also because entry level LCDs aren't particularly good at displaying SD stuff. But the LA32D550 at R3,499 is your best bet!

3 Series is not older unless its a A,B or C model. D indicates 2011 model. 3 Series is ultra low range while 5 series is mid-range. Don't buy a 3 series LCD, they're pretty crap. Save up and get the D550. Otherwise there are some decent LGs on special for 3k from time to time

Reread the post. 51" "(D450)" = 1365x768.

Would be a downgrade if there is no/little 1080p content.

There are no 'D' 3 Series. http://www.samsung.com/africa_en/co...levision/lcd-tv/index.idx?pagetype=subtype_p2

'D' starts with 4 Series now - LA32D400 HD Ready.

Series 5 is not mid range, it is the entry level Full HD range.

Sooooo, on Friday night I got home and the microwave stopped working. Ended up at Game on Saturday afternoon to get a new 1. I showed the wife a white 1 with all the necessary features but the wife decided she needed a metallic 1 with mirror finish for whatever reason. Anyway, since we were at Game I decided to check out the tv's. Showed the wife the LA40D550 on special, she said it's R500 more than we can spend. So I said, well, we should also take the white microwave and save another R200 :D We ended up getting the Samsung LA40D550 and free DVD player for R5499, as well as the metallic microwave :D

Must say, the feed to the display tv was terrible, I almost changed my mind and got the Logik for R4999 because the picture quality was actually quite amazing on it!!! Luckily the salesman was helpful and swapped the feed and showed a much better quality picture on the Samsung!!!

And the Samsung 51cm CRT tv will be donated along with the free DVD player we got to 1 of my wife's aunts who is watching tv on a 37cm (yes you read correctly, cm) black and white tv.

The picture quality is amazing! I tried out a SD video of a soccer World Cup match, no blurring, no issues at all!!!

Yeah, pricing is keen. Has to be considered. I'm impartial to the LCD vs Plasma argument. It's 6 of the one and half a dozen of the other...

Not really. Depends on purposes. Eg. Tim doesn't even use his for TV. "Amazing awesome great TV" can be misleading. :)
