Any idea where I could find Series 6 LCD's? The only Series 6 Sammy's I've seen at my closest Makro and Game are the 40" LED's (UA40D6600) while everything else is Series 5.

Cats also only seem to have Series 6 LED's on their website.

I've not seen series 6 LCD's at Hifi Corp either.

I believe Makro has them on special for R7999. I believe it is 100Hz however I'm struggling to find a link that can confirm this.

I really really really want the Sammy UA46D6000 but the cheapest place I've been able to find them is Cats for R12999 and regardless of how much I want it, there is no way I can justify spending R13K on television.

I was hoping to get a 46" at least but the LG seems pretty good bang for buck so I may have to compromise on the size a bit.

Does anyone know if there's a better TV to be had for R8K?

Why not get the UA40D6000 @ Dion Wired. It's on special for R9999

Look for UA46D5500, same as D6000 (without 3D & 100Hz instead of 200Hz) for a bit cheaper. Do a search, someone posted they got one recently, but wasnt happy with light uniformity, so test before you take.
 
The reason I'm eyeballing the Series 6 is because most okes reckon that the Series 6 is miles ahead of the Series 5 in terms of technology and picture quality so I'd rather spend a little bit more and get something with newer tech.

If I could find a Series 6 LCD for R10K brand new that would be sweet but as I pointed out I really don't know where I would find them.

In the past (C models) they were different designs, but these days its seems Samsung is rationalising their production lines with the D models. From what I've seen the D6000 & D5500 are pretty near identical panels with different circuitry/firmware.

That's exactly it. Happy with the quality after playing around with the presets (will fine-tune later) but must say I'm still getting used to the actual size of the thing after years of happy viewing on a 72cm CRT! I'm one of those chaps who has to sit at the back of the cinema - any closer & I get a headache. I'm sitting 3.5 metres away from the screen and I've resorted to 4:3 mode from 16:9! Hopefully this is something I'll gradually get used to - nailing it to the wall will buy me an extra few cm's so hopefully that'll help too!
 
i have long long waited for this:
a 40" LED Full HD for R4999.
its finally happened, but it is a Hisense (ok i see the special has expired, but it will come again)

i've lived with a CRT up to now and can live with the CRT for at least another year still

Rather get the Samsung LA40D550, unless you need LED back-lit LCD instead of CCFL back-lit LCD?
 
I just picked up the LG 42LE5500 at Makro for R5,999. It was their demo unit marked at R6,999 and we beat them down.
Thoughts? I feel it is a bargain. What do you guys think?

Edit: Okay, home now. Took my old (5 years) Sansui 40" LCD off the wall mount and got the LG mounted. The first thing I wanted to test was streaming movies off my Mezzmo server. On the Sansui I had a WD TV Live doing this and it worked perfect. Now to compare with the LG's built in functionality.
I tried a few HD movies and was not impressed. Movies were a little stuttery which was annoying. I did a factory reset of the LG and on first boot it prompted me for a firmware update. I applied the update and went to see if the update affected the movie streaming at all.
Woooaaaahhhh.... PERFECT. The quality of this thing is amazing and the streaming is hundreds.

I think this is the best R6k I have spent in a while. The quality of this device is simply amazing.

BTW: This demo unit was only put on display on Sat. So ran for a total of about 30 hours in store. Pretty kewl for a R1k knock off of the price :)

Which of these would you guys recommend. Would be for Xbox, HD Dstv and blu-ray.

Samsung 46" (117cm) FHD LCD LA46D550 @ Makro for R7499
LG 47" FHD LCD 47LK530 for R8500 at Cats and Hirschs
Telefunken 46" FHD LCD @ Game for R4999 (don't know the model nbr)

From reading this forum, I see the Samsung is 60hz and the LG 100hz. Is this worth the extra R1000. Not sure about the Telefunken. I assume it is about 50hz.
 
From those 3 i would say the Lg would be your best bet for an overall good performance because it is 100hz, and it would be better for sport and for your needs (blu-ray) gaming ect. However for sport and television, plasma is recommended.

The telefunken is a no go as they are not of the same quality as they used to be.

If your budget restricts you from spending an extra R1000 on the Lg then get the Samsung.
 
I own the LA46D550 it's a great TV, but honestly I'd go for the LG, firstly because I'm sure LG haven't used cheap plastics for the bezel and the screen overlay, the amount of effort to clean this TV is way more then it should be and I gave up after the first little scratches started to appear out of magic.

Anyone have experience with the Hisense brand. It is a LED and has a 3 year guarantee.
 
After numerous attempts of trying to get that LA40D550/LA46D550 i gave up and took the plunge and got a Plasma PS51d451 for R6999 a couple of days ago. What an awesome tv, im very happy with the picture quality on SD content and can safely say its better than an LCD on tv and much better value in terms of size.
The only downside is reflectivity in dark scenes during the day, but i mainly watch tv at night so this is no biggie. Plus im trying to sort the room out with darker curtains which will help. I have never encountered most of the stuff you guys talk about, There is absolutely no buzz coming from the tv, i tried to hear it but couldnt, The tv runs very cool. I havent watched one channel for long enough to notice image retention.

Does this tv require a break in peroid, because im running the cell light at 10 and mostly all settings at half?
How do i know if i have the latest firmware?
How can i calibrate the settings to get the optimum picture quality?
