Game brochure is always up to maggots, try phoning them and find out if its the same model, im sure it is.

I was also seriously considering the LA46D550 at one one point but gave it a skip because of the 50/60Hz refresh. You pointed out that you watch sport so I would say avoid. Get a TV with at least 100Hz or more.

That LG 47LK530 you highlighted seems like pretty damn good buy. This might just end up being the one I buy. A LG 47" 100Hz TV for R8,5K is a bargain. I think I'm gonna go have a look at it.

I'm not very sure about the HiSense but I was also looking at the one that Wasp 21 is referring to (46"T28 Hisense LED) but there were a few things about it that bothered me:

1. I've heard that this TV is based on relatively old tech.
2. The dynamic contrast is a big issue for some and apparently it cannot be disabled.
3. When I went to look at it they actually had it sitting right next to a Sammy Series 6 LED and the picture quality between the two was like night and day difference. That just put me off from the HiSense completely.

One of the questions I do have is would it be better to spend more money now and get a TV that does 3D for some future proofing? I mean are 3D capable TV's still more of a gimmick right now or do the people who have 3D TV sets use the 3D functionality regularly? If I buy a TV I'm hoping that it will last me at least 5 - 6 years before I have to consider a replacement.

I use the 3D atleast once a week, you have to watch IMAX Under The Sea 3D, it's pure awesomeness, that being said my train of thought was the same as yours, buy a TV that does everything now and future proof.
 
My opinion would be that 3d with glasses is going nowhere - they are only 50 + movies out and of those you would probably watch like only 5. Beside that i dont like the idea of putting glasses over glasses. I believe 3d without glasses is already out. So rather wait for that technology to mature than wasting your time with 3d with glasses which is a dead end technology.

Well that train of thought is going to cost me anything from R4K - R6K more which is the problem. :p

Indeed there is a lot of truth to that statement as technology will be drastically different in 5 years time but I can't help feeling like if I buy an LCD TV which is on special today that I'm basically buying dated technology because the reason the TV is special is because they're trying to move old stock. I generally try to buy as current as my money will allow...but in this case I'm not so sure. :confused:

Screen size will date faster than the tech.

51" FHD 3D plasma @ R9,999!
 
The PS51D550 Full HD 3D Plasma was R9999 at Dion Wired last time I checked, then R599 for the 3D Starter Kit at Makro.
 
Hmmm - makes me think whether the Ps51D550 is worth the 3k extra over the Ps51D450 (Hd ready non 3d)

"Night and day" is very different to "noticeable". Let's not exaggerate now...

I also don't think you understand my argument correctly. When source is 1080p, I've never said rather go for a HD Ready screen over a FHD screen. It's all about the source.
 
Guys, I never got a response from my post :( I am looking for input on the LG 42LE5500 that I purchased last Sat for R6k. I am keen to find out if I got a bargain - or not?

Personally I feel I did. After input from some of the LCD/LED experts here puhleez :)

Its an LED and especially an LG, Thats the new range and i feel 2 inches more does make a difference over the Sammy's. Lowest Ive seen the samsungs go was R6399 for a 40inch LED new range, however those have only one hdmi, so you scored a good deal. I cant comment further as i do not have experience with that set, but on paper it does seems like good value for money. I hope you are enjoying it. Oh and btw im no expert

I've been following this thread for two days now... And still don't know what to do... I need plus minus 42inch screen. For DSTV and blue ray. HD and SD. Don't play games at all and don't use screen for pc linkup. Can't decide what's better : plasma or led. My mind says plasma from all I've read but scared of the glare and burn -ins... Need good response time though for sport and SD content... What should I do???

What's your budget? What's the lighting conditions of the room u will have the TV in? If the room is dark enuff then from what i gather, glare should not be an issue :)

I too am guilty of asking silly questions here which could easily be answered by Google :o

Good price for R6k having 100Hz.

And the 2" bigger really makes a difference at relatively smaller sizes like 40".

If you have uniform lighting then definitely a good deal. :)

DSTV = 43" 720p plasma, Blu-ray = 1080p...

Weigh up how much you need each. I'm guessing 85% DSTV. I would go with 43" plasma, because 1080p still looks brilliant on it, and SD TV is a lot better on it than entry LCD. Also with certain 1080p content, like animated, the 720p plasma would beat entry 1080p LCD due to its better colours and blacks.

Depending on the amount of BR (1080p) stuff you're playing, I wouldn't be too concerned about resolution.

If your room is bright though - lots of direct sunlight - plasma's not going to be great. LCD is brighter which is why it's better for sunny rooms.

LCD always looks better in the store...
 
Howdy all you TV boffs!

I need some advice on purchasing a telly and I have no clue on what to get (not much of a TV person but it will assist in bringing peace to my house!)

I want to mount a telly in the bedroom and I have limited space on the wall. I figured around a 32 inch or slightly larger (but not much) would fit. I am also going to get an HD PVR and I would like to hook up some sort of media centre in the future.

Budget? R5-6kish?

What are your recommendations? Where to shop (pref. in PTA)?
