I need some advice on purchasing a telly and I have no clue on what to get (not much of a TV person but it will assist in bringing peace to my house!)

I want to mount a telly in the bedroom and I have limited space on the wall. I figured around a 32 inch or slightly larger (but not much) would fit. I am also going to get an HD PVR and I would like to hook up some sort of media centre in the future.

Budget? R5-6kish?

What are your recommendations? Where to shop (pref. in PTA)?

Does anyone here know if:
a) Panasonic will soon be releasing new range in SA? Coz there's a very nice 42inch fhd 3d plasma available overseas but here they only have 2 50+inch fhd 3d plasmas...

b) Will samsung ever release fhd 3d plasmas similar to their smart led's that's smaller than 50inches?

I might just get this... What's actually really attractive to me about this deal is the 3 year guarantee!!

Tonight i saw the LG 42LK450 in the flesh at a friend's place; i helped her set up the basics (auto-tuning the channels and seeing what file formats play on it). Btw, this is what Makro is selling for 1 more day at R5299 iirc, same model as what Game sells. I'd be happy with this TV for sure. It played about half of the .mkv files i tried on it, i guess sometimes it isn't happy with audio or video codecs :(

Do the experts here think it's worth paying R700 more for LED vs LCD?

P.S. Game will of course beat the Makro price provided Makro has stock.

edit: Where is the cheapest place to get a decent HDMI cable in Cape Town? CBD, Canal Walk or Southern Suburbs.

Just making it crystal clear, since R5,999 is the normal price for your TV and would not have caused as much interest. Also, people tend to not read.

Though on a good day, u could probably bargain them down. When i was at Game last, the dude dropped the Sony 40" price by 1k purely because i looked in its general direction :p Not interested in Sony so i didn't even nibble at what he was offering. I said I was just there to look that day, not gonna buy anything. So he walks off never to return. 30 minutes to closing time. Another dude was looking at TVs after me and nobody came to help him. I told him what i knew about pricing, as it seemed obvious he didn't know what was a good price or not, or the difference between plasmas and LCD/LEDs :p
 
LOL, I did a double bargain that day. When I was checking out the TV (advertised R6,999) a salesman came and offered me a R500 discount. I tried to push for more but he would not budge. I told him I would think about it and moved off to check out the other tvs.
I then asked another salesman to help with a price and that I would not accept less than R1,000 off. He spent some time on the phone with some manager then told me I could take it.

So when playing the bargain game, try more than just there first salesman :)

On a side note, my Acer H5360 720p projector arrives on Wed to replace my LG AN110. 40th birthday pressie from the wife and mates. :)

Does game offer an extended guarntee on their sets, anybody have more information on that?
Im a bit worried i have a one year warranty on my plasma.
 
It seems like most LCD's/LED's and Plasma's generally only have a 1 year warranty (which is also a huge problem for me as I refuse to spend big money on an electronic device that only has a 1 year warranty) but I do believe some places will extend the warranty (manufacturer warranty) for 3 years but I don't know if this comes at an extra cost or not.

I see that the newer Sammy LED's come with a 3 year warranty as standard which is quite nice.

It's an extra cost and the warranty is covered by the store at their discretion. I'd imagine they'd take the repair route first...

That is indeed nice, if only the CCFLs and plasmas followed suit.
