I think he ingested it all at once. That said enough trolling Tim...just move on.

Troll, eh? So you like Lord of the Rings then? I watched it in SD, soo much better!

Troll types:
Tolkien used several different terms for types of trolls, though there seems to have been some overlap in meanings;
  • Stone-trolls were Trolls who turned into stone during daylight, like the Trolls in The Hobbit. They could speak, and used a debased form of Westron (rendered into Cockney English in The Hobbit).
  • Hill-trolls are described as having killed Arador, Chieftain of the Rangers of the North and grandfather to Aragorn. Tolkien described the trolls of that region, including the three from The Hobbit, as stone-trolls, suggesting that hill-trolls might be a sub-class or alternate term for such. However, the Army of the West fought "hill-trolls" of Gorgoroth that could move in sunlight at the Black Gate, implying that these hill-trolls, at least, were Olog-hai rather than stone-trolls.
  • Cave-trolls were seen in Moria. One was described as having dark greenish scales and black blood. Their hide was thick enough that when Boromir struck one in the arm his sword was notched and did no damage. However, Frodo Baggins was able to impale the "toeless" foot of the same troll with the enchanted dagger Sting.
  • Mountain-trolls were mentioned once, wielding the great battering ram Grond in shattering the gates of Minas Tirith.
  • Snow-trolls are mentioned only to describe Helm Hammerhand. When Helm went out clad in white during the Long Winter to stalk and slay his enemies, he was described as looking like a snow-troll. It thus seems implied that these trolls were white in colour and lived in cold climates, but otherwise nothing is known of them.
  • Olog-hai were "strong, agile, fierce, and cunning" trolls created by Sauron, not unlike the Uruk-hai, and were able to withstand sunlight while under the sway of Sauron's will. They seldom spoke and were said to know no language other than the Black Speech, in which Olog-hai means "troll-folk" (singular Olog "troll"). Because of their cunning, they were thought by some[who?] to be giant Orcs, rather than trolls. They appeared towards the end of the Third Age and could be found near Dol Guldur and in the mountains around Mordor.[5] In the Battle of the Morannon, there appear "hill-trolls" of Gorgoroth which are implied to be Olog-hai in one of the Appendices to The Lord of the Rings (the term is not used within the story proper). These were described as being taller and wider than men, and their hide or armour was described as a mesh of horny scales. They had black blood. Peregrin Took slew the leader of these trolls at the Battle of the Morannon; and after the destruction of the One Ring and the fall of Sauron, the surviving trolls scattered as if mindless.

Which one am I?

To Tim182, i like your way of thinking , it is out of the box that's for sure. Back in the days i had NEC 17" 1600x1200 CRT Monitor. It was one of the best for that time '97, but i really don't think that this awesome monitor was better then my current 26" NEC 1920x1200 that i own now. Regarding movies i own LOR on Blurays and i'got LOR Bluray Rips as well. If you are in JHB area you are more then welcome to compere the PQ on both. On ****ty Samsung plasma that i've got at the moment and NEC monitor as well. For me the difference is clearly visible.

Why would you buy low res plasma for Blu-ray?

And you're obviously sitting close to a 26" monitor, so the difference is clearly noticeable.

Not sure what the debate/argument is?

O'K maybe i did not make myself clear enough. Sorry PostmanPot. You know bad English. Sorry again. My comment was to Tim182, who i believe was trying to convince us that HD is how can i say, not necessary. And that he prefers and maybe even likes SD more.
I don't have "low res plasma" and i'm sitting about 45 centimeters from my monitor, which as far as i know is normal.

Wait I'm confused, don't you say that your plasma is brilliant at br rips etc? Yours is low res?? You are fine though as 42 inches is still small enough to still struggle to see the diffs between 720p and 1080p.
I think Tim just lost a gasket so is venting steam

If you hadnt clicked, he's being sarcastic to emphasise the folly in believing there is no perceivable difference between viewing FHD content (e.g. 1080i DSTV or 1080p Bluray) on a 1024x768 vs. 1920x1080 display.

Nonsense, best LOTR experience is to wait for it to show on one of the Drifta channels in all its 320x240 splendour :p

There's a difference between saying something looks good at a certain task, and advocating something for a certain task. :)

Tim has quite clearly lost a gasket (and a few marbles), and those troll teeth are chewing on the wrong end of the stick.

In my experience with HDTV's/HD DSTV already with the ability to display high resolutions, people are more concerned with picture quality than more horizontal definition which is debatable in any case because most people sit outside the necessary viewing distance for the full FHD experience (that would be more the case of 1080p, which I haven't seen anyone ever advocate low res plasma for). I haven't seen anyone deny a perceivable difference when they are at the correct (yet awkward) viewing distances for FHD (32" = 1m, 40" = 1.5m, 50" = 2m).

Series 4 plasma beats Series 5 LCD at HD PVR at sheer picture quality, I demonstrate this every time I have people over (your average Joe Public who are sold on entry LCD at mass stores). I think this is the most pertinent point to Tim's waffle.

Thats a matter of option, I've spend enough time checking what DSTV HD sport channel looks like on 1024x768 plasma, and I would say the PQ on my (properly configured/calibrated) 5 series LCD is equal. The only thing better is slightly smoother fluidity in fast moving scenes vs. the LCDs 50Hz refresh.

My previous set was a top of line LG Flatron 100Hz CRT which I recon had better PQ than either plasma or LCD, but still the far better sharpness, clarity, fine detail, surface texturing of a native 1920x1080 picture wows me way more than any difference in PQ.

Then all I can say you and your mates have low standards (or poor eye sight).

If like me you've become accustomed to watching most HD content at its native 1920x1080 resolution, anything less is just inferior and doesnt seem life-like. For example watching the kick-off of a soccer match on 1024x768 plasma, the center circle is not smooth and uniform, the edges are all jaggered as there is not enough resolution to display a perfectly curved line.

So I've bought myself the Sammy PS43D490! And must say I'm more than happy! Most surprised with how it handles SD - didn't expect it to be this seemless after watching so many screens attempt it instore. OK I realise that the HD Pvr upscaling must be the main reason for this but still very content. Watched this 2nd rate HD movie, White Lion, last night on MntHD and we were absolutely mesmerized by the scenes. So crisp, amazing detail, fantastic contrast... Watched the rugby & a bit of soccer and with easy setting adjustments I got the same result! No judder, amazing detail! Checked old DVD's from my LG RH399H and although the upscaling isn't perfect (understandable concerning the source) we were once again quite impressed! Now I can wait for what I really wanted in peace - that's if it will ever reach our technologically outdated shores!

advice please guys
saw this LG at a few shops.
wanted to know if its worth it?

LG 42le4500

its full hd, led, 100hz

got it at marko and dion wired from R6k to R6.3k
used for watching tv and playing games mostly...

thanks in advance!

Not sure about the 100Hz, from what I can see LE4500=50Hz, LE5500=100Hz.

+1

"LED" marketing pushing the price up when the Samsung LA40D550 can be had for R4,999. Granted 2" smaller.

If you value your TV, which I'd imagine is mostly SD, it would be wise to check out Samsung PS43D450/D490 43" 3D (R4,999 - R6,500) plasma as it's guaranteed to handle SD better. Perhaps also the PS51D450 51" (R6,999).

Why when a good old CRT can be had for a tenth of the price? It handles SD best of all. In fact I am now using a CRT for everything. Even HD looks so much better

Yah no i checked the specs as well, it said 50hz. The salesman said 100hz. Guess the salesman didnt know. Mostly hd stuff for now, sd satellite for now but later probably hd....
