Typical. :)

Go to the store (preferable a professional AV shop with a dark room) and test the following:

R4,899 Samsung PS43D450
R4,999 Samsung LA40D550
R6,999 Samsung LA46D550
R6,999 Samsung PS51D450

You can take your media/console and hook it up. Remember to fiddle with the settings; they are always in 'store mode' when on display - full brightness/contrast/cell/back light which appears better to Joe Public under bright shop lighting.

used for watching tv and playing games mostly...

I have the Le5500 and it is very impressive. Not sure about the 4500 though.

Glad you're happy, but I dont think you realise how much better it can actually be. Your 1024x768 TV is dropping 1.3 million pixels of source resolution from the 1920x1080i DSTV HD signal.

Since tonight's 8pm movie was Tron Legacy, a Bluray I own, decided to do a subjective comparison of the 1080i50 picture from my HDPVR2P and the 1080p24 one off my PS3. After a bit of minor tweaking of each, the quality/clarity/detail of the two were very similar. Up close (< 1m) the Bluray picture had ever so slightly more sharpness/grain, but to my surprise they were basically almost identical (was expecting more of a diff).

The one thing that came out of flipping continuously between the HDMI inputs, was that the DSTV signal plays out slightly speeded up (probably 25fps) in comparison to the 24fps of Bluray. Kept having to FF the PS3 to keep the two exactly in sync.

Bottom line, you can only realise the full potential of a DSTV HD picture on a TV that can natively display its FHD 1920x1080 relsoution.

Eish, raining on the parade with your paper arguments again.

Most people watch from 2 - 3m+, not 1m. Blows your paper arguments out the water which depend on being uncomfortably close to make full use of Full HD.

I'm glad you were able to faff over Tron Legacy from 1m. Well I'm able to faff over both Series 4 plasma and Series 5 LCD, and the plasma wins at sheer PQ which is more important at those longer viewing distances than getting anal about pixel count.

I'm starting to doubt your apparent super vision, considering all the 1m watching you do.

If you value your TV, which I'd imagine is mostly SD, it would be wise to check out Samsung PS43D450/D490 43" 3D (R4,999 - R6,500) plasma as it's guaranteed to handle SD better. Perhaps also the PS51D450 51" (R6,999).

Lol, that is actually good advice for some. My friend is so disappointed that her new 42" LG FHD LCD displays analogue SABC and eTV channels in all their terrible glory. She felt that she might as well have gotten a CRT tv instead of spending 5.2k on the 42 incher!
 
I think we need a poll as to who prefers what and who is undecided on Plasma vs LCD vs LED :p A lot of heated debate going on here!

For me, my 720p projector trumps them all. I have a 42" FHD LED, a 40" HDR LCD and 32" HDR LCD and kind of see then all as general TV watching. For movies and XBox I resort to my projector. While the quality of the picture may not match the LED, the overall experience blows them all right out the water - by a long shot I may add.

Agreed, buying a FHD flatscreen without also investing in HDMI capable source devices is like chucking money down the toilet. I've always maintained you have to consider both source & output devices when investing in HD.

If you're going to stick with analogue input (RF or RCA) or are not interested in high picture fidelity, you might as well save some money and buy a decent/big CRT.

Something else to note...
With the SD PVR in the lounge on my older 40" LCD I used the scart connector from the Pvr to the Tv. Quality was decent.
When I recently upgraded to the 42" LED I no longer had the option of the scart and had to resort to RCA. The picture quality was absolutely terrible. Also, the movie streaming capabilities were real crap (loads of stutter).
After hooking the TV up to the net I was prompted to do a firmware upgrade which I did. Now movies stream perfectly and my SD pvr has a perfectly acceptable picture.

I never did any in store testing except for there demo. I bought the TV purely based on reviews I read on the net. Had I actually tested everything in store and seen the initial problems I had, I probably would have not purchased the tv.

The point being that you should not go on what you just see in the store. User reviews speak a much better truth.

That's what I think when you recommend a HDReady 1024*768 Plasma to people...

So I'm all for CRT now because that handles SD much better than the HDR Plasma. And that's a fact. After all you have to consider that the average person mainly only watches SD, right?

Not sure about the Ds, but based on the difference between my home C530 LCD and a C5000 LED at the office (both entry 50Hz), I prefer the picture of the LCD (also less reflective).

I'd be hard pressed to spend the extra for a D5000 over D550 if 2011 models are similar.
