R100 cheaper? Where have you seen any UA40D5000 for R6k and UA46D5000 for 9.1k?
I don't care if you hate these TVs, it is still a bloody good deal. Cheapest I have seen them before was at Cats for around 7k and 10.5k respectively.

I wonder when the proper LED tvs will start filtering down into the general consumer market where they become a viable option when buying a new tv.

No such thing as a 'proper' LED TV on the market. All TVs refered to as LED are LCD with LED illumination (instead of CCFL tube illumination).
There is a technology called OLED which is 'proper', but performance/pricing are not mainstream viable atm.

Dunno, if memory serves then I'm used to seeing Samsung 40" LED edge-lit LCD for around R5,999 at Game.
It seems we agree that it's only a good deal regarding price, and that you hate it too.
I wouldn't quite say I hate it but I personally did prefer the picture of the 5 series LA over the UA. And the LA40 is 1k cheaper while the LA46 is 1.5k cheaper so I wouldn't recommend or buy these LEDs over the equivalent LCDs.
Some people do prefer the look though. The UA also uses less electricity, has a slimmer frame and is thinner as well.

Lol, I just don't wanna say hate because I'd be quite happy with one of these if I won it in a competition. In fact, it would fit nicely and look good on my bedroom wall
.Yeah I am of course thinking on LED tvs with local dimming. OLED will be amazing but the price to size ratio is still just to insane to take it seriously.

Dunno, I think it will come much faster. Local dimming is not expensive/complex to implement, basically more advanced signal processing.
Because LEDs have a fast response times, their brightness can be changed very quickly (unlike CCFL), and I think almost all LEDs do average dimming already (alter illumination bightness on all LEDs together based on avg brightness of the whole frame). This is how they achieve deeper blacks than LCD.
Local dimming just takes this a step further, manipulating individual LED's brightness based on darkness of the corresponding area of the frame. From my understanding edge-lit LEDs are only illuminated from the left/right edges so local dimming is only possible in the horizontal plane e.g. when displaying a letterbox picture the LEDs driving the lines where the top/bottom black bars are can be switched off completely.
