Because LEDs have a fast response times, their brightness can be changed very quickly (unlike CCFL), and I think almost all LEDs do average dimming already (alter illumination bightness on all LEDs together based on avg brightness of the whole frame). This is how they achieve deeper blacks than LCD.

Local dimming just takes this a step further, manipulating individual LED's brightness based on darkness of the corresponding area of the frame. From my understanding edge-lit LEDs are only illuminated from the left/right edges so local dimming is only possible in the horizontal plane e.g. when displaying a letterbox picture the LEDs driving the lines where the top/bottom black bars are can be switched off completely.

It depends on the manufacturing/marketing beasts. With the majority of Joe Public getting wet at the mouth over "LED TV" (LED edge-lit LCD), who knows how long they will keep the prices of decent LED TVs up...

I suspect a long time, but only time will tell.

Yeah, TV manufacturers are businesses driven by profit margins sustainable by market supply/demand. That said, I suspect next year there will be very few LCD models being launched so basically most mainstream TVs will be LED. This should trigger another technical 'arms race' between manufacturers to differentiate themselves by releasing the best/most advanced LEDs.

LED resolutions should increase quickly (on majority edge-lit models), but eventually they'll have to swing back to array back-lit technology (to handle vertical & horizontal planes). By then the manufacturing processes/costs would have evolved such that they could make them as cheap/thin as edge-lit. Resolution of the array panels will then continue to increase to a point where they are approaching 1:1 with the LCD shutter.

Once you get to a point where you can cost effectively manufacture an LED array of 1920x1080x3 resolution, the need for the LCD shutter falls away.
 
Ok, from what i am gathering about LCD, is there are different "screens" to consider when buying LCD. Let's exclude LED (Edge lit LCD) and focus on conventional LCD. Which current models are best to buy? Looking at 40" for PS3 Gaming - 1080p. And before i get it..i have my 50" Plasma Beauty as my primary TV. Nothing better....

+1 or the 46" version for R7.6k

Although I would also check out the UA40D5000 for R5900 which I posted earlier. PS3 looks awesome on the LED I think while movies look better on the LCD (my opinion). I personally don't think its worth the extra R900 but it may be worth it in your eyes so maybe just check it out

Solely for gaming. My plasma takes care of the movies. But thanks.
 
For that price its a bargain, i paid R6999 for mine about 2 weeks ago. The set is very reflective though, make sure you not using it in an environment that is bright and has lots of direct sunlight.
