From experience the whole LED range D5000-8000 have the same synthetic plastic like screen/filter, and exhibit similar reflectivity. The surface is glossy so reflection are well formed, but the brightness of them is quite a bit less intense than the glass surface of the D550 plasmas.

Well if the d5000 and d8000 use the same synthetic plastic then they will not be as bad as the plasma. In general though the only people who will notice the reflection are those with light rooms with many windows.

Besides with the 51 inch plasma so cheap, people could afford black out curtains just in case :D.
They need to make plasma more green though, it chows way too much power. Could plasma ever replicate oled's low power consumption? How long until plasma is phased out i wonder?

I was just reading the best deals of the week thread and i saw the game special they have featured.

Telefunken 55” FullHD LED TV (Game)

In its weekly specials brochure, Game has a range of Telefunken LED televisions for sale. While Telefunken may not be synonymous with high end visual quality, Game does offer the 55 inch FullHD LED model for just R9,999.

Wow that is epic.

No one said it was. Point is you denied it's a general thing, and it IS a general thing.

I was asking a valid a question about plasma's. Is the tech going to be replaced by OLED?

A fan (and owner) of current mainstream techs - TN LCD, IPS LCD, PVA LCD, plasma.

I never said your question isn't valid, just not keen on derailing this thread (bargains) any further than the OP's question re PS51D550 and UA40D6400, which I compared myself, and as such gave input...

Please stay on topic or at least in the discussion. If you want a thread where you can post a snide remark at PP every 5 posts then please do so but stop adding clutter to this one.

@killa. PROPER oled screens may replace many tech but who knows...? We only really have very high end ones out at the moment and the fact that neither plasma nor LCD(or LED backlit LCDs) are perfect just yet proves somewhat that both tech's will survive for some time to come. What I'm more curious about is what is going on with development of the plasma's over at panasonic since they bought over pioneer which had some amazing tech in the pipeline a few years ago eg.

This is a picture of their ultimate black range taken in a dark room:

The point here is that plasma has the potential to still deliver amazing things even if you think it's old outdated tech. It all just depends how these guys decide how they want to move forward.

Don't understand why you continue to be so hung up by the names the industry has chosen to refer to a certain technology, even if they're not 100% descriptive? Even for novices, there will be little chance of confusion as the industry has already determined that direct drive LED technology will use extended/more descriptive labels e.g. OLED, AMOLED, CLED etc.

In all fairness I have no idea why panasonic haven't developed pioneers tech any further or what is the reason for the delay. Fact is that if they could implement what those tv's showed originally then the LCD/LED market would take a considerable knock IMHO. Maybe the cost of manufacturing those panels and tech was just too expensive.

Yep, to achieve that last 10% of performance perfection take a disproportionate amount of money & effort. Whether one can achieve a return on investment with this in the market is often questionable.

I am thinking plasma is a dead technology. I cannot really see how plasma tv's could compete with oled. http://www.oled-display.net/oled-tv-television/

What makes you think plasma can compete with a low power, amazing picture technology? I also cannot really understand how plasma plans on going toe to toe with a technology that consumes less power, has an incredible picture and is cheaper to manufacture.

That article indicates that plasma and current lcd, led is on the way out and will be replaced by oled but i guess we will have to wait and see.
