LCD and Plasma Bargains

i reckon the plasma picture is already sexy. just bummed that hd pvr subscription is so expensive. that would be insane. the hd pvr on a full hd lcd is pretty decent as well. but not that impressive on sd channels. dstv needs to make that subscription cheaper..

That article indicates that plasma and current lcd, led is on the way out and will be replaced by oled but i guess we will have to wait and see.

Cheaper, easy to achieve higher contrast and superior picture quality, better viewing angles, better picture quality, better colour shift, bigger sizes, better bang for buck. And Samsung's behind them, ain't going nowhere soon.

Pity about the power consumption - I guess it'll only appeal to those buying cars larger than 1.3L.

Not sure what a 1.3l car has to do with tv's but i guess it's early monday and i missed it.

How much cheaper is plasma than oled postman?

Apparently, the OLED TV's are about 8x as expensive as an equal sized LCD display. So way more expensive than plasmas. Only 4x the price by the end of next year though. :sick: Although, by that time, LCD and plasma TV's will also be cheaper again...

NPD DisplaySearch predicts the new 55-inch OLED TVs will sell for around $8000 when they debut in the third quarter of 2012, the Wall Street Journal reports. The good news is that prices will drop 50 percent to about $4000 (or less!) by the end of 2013.

By comparison, 55-inch LCD TVs will sell for under $1000 in the first quarter of 2012, according to Dan de Grandpre, CEO of Dealnews.com.

Only a matter of time.

I recon in the next 5-10 year only LED (organic or inorganic) will remain. Never mind TVs that will be for almost all forms of illumination, with the exception of cases where extreme brightness is required.

Power consumption will dictate this in the future.

I'm sure it will eventually, just not sure about that time frame. The insane prices will probably mean it won't be soon. I'd love one of those OLED's but damn, they're expensive. Currrently with plasma, you get far more for your money. (Provided you buy a proper, 1920 X 1080 one, not something with a resolution from the early 90's.)

Of course not, eventually all TV LED technology will move to direct drive illumination e.g. Sony's CLED (Crystal LED) which is just 6 million non-organic LEDs in the panel (2MP x 3 colours).

It just depends which technology matures quicker from a manufacturing efficiency/cost perspective.

That's the thing. As with everything price will dictate what will remain more mainstream over the next decade or so unless one of the techs suddenly develop something amazing. I would love an OLED display but it must not cost as much as a car :)

I think you underestimate how strict (& thus legislated) power efficiency will become in the future. I foresee a time in the not too distant future when technology like Plasma will no longer be legal (to sell) due to excessive power requirements (starting with the more sensative regions like the EU).

The only technology on the horizon that has the scope for continued power reduction is LED based. Already my 46D6000 TV only draws 50W with the backlight on 17 (verified with my Eskom eddi), and I think this is just the start of whats possible based on how rapidly LED efficiency has been evolving recently (not just in TVs).

Well i have no idea how much oled will cost, upfront it will obviously be expensive but then lcd's and plasma's were darn expensive as well.

I have not seen pricing for oled yet, i don't even know if oled is available but samsung say only by the end of the year and samsung cannot give pricing on their 55". Perhaps you guys know the pricing?

I always find it funny when companies advertise their clarity and black levels via TV ads and pictures. If you're amazed at the pictures and ads then you don't need another screen :)
