LCD and Plasma Bargains

It's a good price. How much better though? You tell me.

It's an obsession with value for money. It just so happens that that's where plasma is king.

Did you go out and see one yet? OR are the thoughts of more pollution when being disposed preventing you? :D

In fact I went out and had a look at various TVs in great detail. Unfortunately I did not see the PS51D550, only the 450 and 490. IMO, even the 5 series LED and LCD are miles ahead. LED more so but it comes at a cost, so does the 6 series, but again it comes at a cost. 50Hz on the 5 series was not an issue, only a disadvantage for HD sports.

What I found absolutely offputting was the glare and reflection on the series 4 plasma. 2 HDMI ports suck too, having to switch cables the whole time would drive me nuts after a while. Then, I could clearly see a difference between the 720p series 4 plasma and other full HD TVs, once you switched to a FHD source.

The 51D490/450 is a HUGE display. With 1366*768 pixels that's a pixel density of 30.73 PPI. The 430 (and possibly 450) which have a resolution of 1024*768 have a pixel density of 25.1 PPI, even less! That's not a lot of pixels per inch... Sitting at 2 - 2.5m this really bothered me. For comparism, the 46 FHD LCD or LED has a pixel density of 47.89 PPI.

The colours on the 4 series Plasma where more accurate than the 5 series LCD and LED but I really did not like them. To me they just seemed dull. I tested this with the same source and using different settings. A higher series Plasma was a different story.

Grow up and realise that your opinion is not the only one that counts. Just because you don't care about certain issues does not mean they are not important to others. And it certainly does also not mean that your opinion counts more. Disposal is not important to me personally but it may well be important to others, that's why I pointed it out. On the other hand I do care about energy consumption.

In an effort to revive this thread.......

PS50C430 - R6999 @ Makro 30 May - 06 June

Yes, it was R6,499 at quite a few places a week or three ago. Might even still be. Haven't heard much of C430 recently as most are now buying D450.

They have never been R6,499 at Game and Makro. They've always been R6,999. I go there religiously.

Hi Gents,

So i am almost at buying point (got a week or so left till I move)
would you buy THIS TV

I read there are some reflection issues...any clue how bad it is?

EDIT...Geez, this was R7999 yesterday, they added 1k in a day wtf?

Still the best value larger TV on the market. Must have sold like hot cakes when it was R6,499.

Bolded the important bits.

Good price. Do you need 200Hz though? 100Hz is usually excellent, might get away with something less.

Won't be as reflective as plasma.

What you using the TV for?

I think for normal viewing it is effectively a 100Hz panel ... the 200Hz is used in 3D mode.

one day there will be a brand-name 40" LED for R4999....
that will be the day i get rid of my CRT TV

Lol, doubt you will want a cheap 40" LED if you're upgrading from a CRT which I presume you use for standard definition/low quality media like normal TV, .avi/movie/series rips, DVDs, etc. 42" plasma for R4,500 will be much better for that purpose.

Not a chance. I have watched a lot of HD Super 15 Rugby and 2 or 3 sd divx movies on my mates 40" 5 series Samsung LED and it looks way better than a 42" c430 Plasma. Not even close.

This belongs in the other thread.

I didn't mention HD stuff, although but tons of forumites tested it vs the LA40C550 (at 720p, also SD/TV) and chose the plasma.

Personally I would battle to understand your claims of .divx (SD) being better on the FHD LED, as the C430's resolution is 1024x768 (rectangular pixels)

Do you also have "home and set up" experience with the C430's, or are you talking from what you saw up close and on non-calibrated sets, in store?
