Hi guys,

I'm in the market for a new TV. I'm looking for a 50" plasma. I don't know much about plasma's but I'll be using it for normal tv, and watching movies (DVD's on it).

How's the PS50C550?
It's going for R10, 899 at cats...

Currently the best value 50" full HD plasma. But, there are reported motion judder issues, so best you go to the store to see for yourself. Good price btw.

Also look at the PS50C430 HD plasma, floats around the R8,000 mark. You really cannot go wrong, this is the tried, tested and trusted plasma. There are quite a few owners on this forum now.

It seems you do not need full HD from what you've told us, so the cheaper HD one will suit you. And there is no motion judder. Savings can go towards other home theatre components.

I've posted my review of the set in this thread, but to summarize:

Pros: good picture in most applications once it's properly calibrated

Cons:
The set has motion judder in panning scenes, is difficult to calibrate and is prone to making a buzzing sound

If I had to do it over again I probably wouldn't buy this set and will probably sell it quite soon.

Thank you guys for all your replies. Well from your opinions, it's clear there are better options out there. And just to add on what PP said, yes I do not need a FHD TV. So a cheapter 50" TV will be fine for my needs.

So I guess it boils down to the 2 tv's now.
The PS50C430 for R8, 499

and this one PS50C450 for R8, 999.

Anyone know what's the difference between these two?

Will check up game as well for a price beat. Weakly special up tomorrow.

As far as I've read on this forum the C450 has an AR protective screen while the C430 doesn't.

I suppose it's not so good if you even considering selling it.. I'll stay away from it :)

Are the 2 hdmi ports on the C430 enough for you? I know it wouldnt be for me. does the C450 have more?

I have the PS42C450. C450 supposedly has an anti reflection finish on the screen (I never heard about this until recently), slightly different aesthetics (Samsung Touch of Colour Rose Black), 3 x HDMI ports opposed to 2 x on the C430, as well as FM radio. Its USB port is also able to play more media than the C430 I believe. I think the C450 has the same USB media playability as the C530 LCDs, so that would include .mkv HD rips.

If you don't have already, the saving should be put towards a home theatre component system. Not one of those DVD player all in one pieces of junk. :D You'd want to be looking at a HDMI receiver + decent 5.1 speakers. Remember that if you have a HDMI receiver, you would attach your devices to it and run them all to your TV over one HDMI cable, therefore only 2 HDMI ports on the C430 isn't such a problem.

I have the Sony STR-500 http://www.sony.co.za/product/ht-str500 currently on special at Hifi Corp for R4499. I couldn't be happier with my purchase, since I had a budget to work with. There are also some good deals on higher end Yamaha/Pioneer speaker/amp packages, check the other "Sound Bargain Thread".

The C450 has 3 HDMI ports and 3 is enough. 2 is not enough actually unless I keep the Xbox unplugged and only connect it as in when I need to play it.

One thing that is intriguing me atm,

I'm looking at getting a 2nd large flatscreen for my study (monitoring and cctv feeds etc) in the not to distant future. I'm trying to find some details on these random OEM screens, like the Proline or Mecer ones... anyone have any experience with them?

How big would the screen be.
I haven't had more troubles with Mecer/Proline/Acer than another make such as LG/Samsung/BenQ....

It seems that regarding computer screens, they are almost the same.

Anyone know where I can get the Sammy PS50C450 or PS50C430 in Cape Town? I'm a bit jittery about ordering from Cats in Jhb. So far, the best price I've found was at Makro (R8999 for the 430). Anyone know what Tafelberg or Audiovision would charge? I want this TV reaaaal bad. Gonna connect it to my PC via HDMI for watching movies, also some SD sport/movies on SABC/DSTV. Maybe connect grab an XBOX at some point. Would this thing be cool for some PC gaming too?

R8999 is the normal price. You've gotta be patient for the specials to come around. Audiovision have generally had the best prices on the PS42C430/1 - better than Game and Makro. Remember, if you find it cheaper, go to Game and they will match the price, with a further 10% of the difference in price as a discount.

Quite a few owners here game on the PS50C430 with Xbox and I'm quite sure they say it's better than LCDs they've gamed on. I suppose if you're willing to take a bit of a resolution knock (we're used to high resolution in PC games) down to the 1366x768 of the PS50C430 then PC gaming will be as good, granted there is little input lag via PC. Your viewing distance for a 50" would probably quite a bit further than 32"/37"/42", so the lower resolution probably won't be a problem.

Can anyone comment on PS50C430 and PC input lag? Don't go and get image burn-in now... :D

Seriously, the TV really is worth R8999. :D

From what I've heard, the TV is definitely worth the R8999! That being said, this is the LCD/Plasma BARGAINS thread :)

I'll probably be buying next month, if Game doesn't have a special I'll probably just go grab one at Makro. Can I buy a licence along with the TV or is that a separate mission?

Can't wait to nail this beast to my wall!

most retailers have tv license paystation type thing

I also cannot wait to wall mount the to be mine 50" plasma on the wall.
Some advice on wall mounting please: is it something simple to do, something I can do myself or is it a job that generally requires a professional?

Sorry for OT.

You apologize for going OT, yet you still go OT....
Why not start a new thread for this...

You'll need to buy the proper bracket of course but if you can hold a drill in your right hand without dropping it and then aim relatively straight then you'll be fine. Just don't skimp on the wall anchors. (buy

not that complicated, you need a spirit level to get everything lined up. Also be aware its a 2 person job.
