Still Haven't taken the plunge!!!

Hi again guys,

I still haven't taken the plunge yet in getting my new TV

Decided on one of two models but can't decide which one!!!

PS50C450 or the PS50C550

To refresh I am going to be watching movies and series, and DSTV and a Blu Ray Player in the future possibly - I will be viewing from about 3m

Now my problem is that do I save up and spend the extra R2000 and get the FHD PS50C550 and be prepared for anything in the future or do I save the R2000 and get the PS50C450 becuase you actually don't notice the difference that much!!!!

HELP!!!

PS: here are the current prices from Cats

PS50C450 - R9000 (R8999)
PS50C550 - R11 000 (R10 899)

:confused::confused::confused:

Get the PS50C430/C450. It is the tried, tested and trusted plasma. From 3m you won't be able to tell the difference between HD and FHD. Promise, Blu-rays will look flippin' amazing!

Also, the PS50C550 has some "jaggering" problems in panning scenes, from what I've read. Never seen the set myself, so I can't comment on how bad it is.

Put the R2000 saving towards the Sony STR-500 HDMI AV receiver/speaker/DVD package at R3999 - R4999. I believe they now have a combo out with a Blu-ray player instead of a DVD player - STR-500BD or something. http://www.sony.co.za/product/ht-str500

Or buy the HD PVR, or HD media player, or Blu-ray player, etc.

I've seen the PS50C430 floating around R8000 at Game/Makro or something. Look around.

Hmmm, I might just end up going for the cheapie myself and spend the rest on a nice yamaha/onkyo entry level sound system :D It can always get moved to the bedroom if something spectacular comes along!

Bragging rights or do you need it? :D

Sony STR-500 sound quality is amazing. Personally I wouldn't need anything more, unless I had cash to blow. Should create a user's thread to get feedback. ;)

Seems like you can get a nice entry level one for a little bit more than R5k. I'm willing to stretch a little if it will be worth it. I'm not much of a sound man myself but I'm willing to try...lol.

With things like this on the way I'm willing to start saving up now for the next "upgrade" when it becomes more affordable:

This is old but the technology should slowly start coming to the market in the next year or two:
Journalists were stunned to silence when Pioneer released details of its new super-black and super-thin prototype televisions on Sunday. Not only had the Japanese company managed to produce a 52-inch plasma display that's just 9mm thick, but it's also unveiled what is unquestionably the greatest television anyone has ever built. Period.

R5k just for the receiver. Then add ±R2000 per front & back pair/center/sub-woofer - for entry level Wharfedale speakers.

Nice TV. ;) Plasma... Best in the world. :D

There are some very good specials floating around, you might be surprised :D

As for the plasma comment, funny thing is I've been reading on a lot of these HD tv review sites and most of the ones that I have seen have plasma's rated as their "top" tv's most of the time.

Would have loved higher end sound, but at about 3 times the price of my STR500 (R3999) it was out of the question. :(

Yeah, plasmas are usually top - at least the mid-higher end ones are. And the best TV in the world is a plasma, like you mentioned. Don't worry, I always mention it when LCD fanbois start comparing mid-high end LCDs to entry plasmas. As I say, compare apples with apples. :D

Did you check the second link with the KURO tech with absolute black levels... :D OMG Amazing!

I think he needs it ; it's streets ahead of Sony sound ... and even an amateur would be able to hear it.

I've found 90% of people aren't amateurs.

For 90% of people, DVD surround sound is enough.

Drifting far from the point though. Sony STR-500 = insane value for money.

That's my opinion, Postman .... I'm entitled to post what I feel.

I've had various Marantz, Yamah and Onkyo amplifiers
I've had Infinity, Sherwood, a few Acoustic Research, Technics, Elac and MB Quart speakers
I've had Yamaha and Velodyne subs.
I've had numerous CD players from entry level to entry level high end.
I've had numerous DVD players from entry level to mid end.
I've used cables from stranded copper to solid silver Kimber cable

He may easily find that another R3,000.00 on the Onkyo is worth more in value that the Sony.

Try advise people to try OTHER things besides what you own ; there are alternatives out there which are possibly better and provide even more value. For me personally after owning and using a fair amount of electronics, I have a very different opinion to you

*whoosh*

K let me try say this in a more understandable way. If your budget is R4,000 - R5,000, then the Sony STR-500 is the best value for money system on the market. And, it is a huge upgrade from what would be good enough for most people, i.e. DVD surround sounds.

When you advise, perhaps try find out if their needs are audiophile or not, before advising strictly based on your needs, and pocket might I add.

Howzit Guys, Went through to HI-FI corp yesterday, the LED/LCD Hisense 40" tv looked great playing HD content but in SD leaves much to be desired. Also checked the Sony 40EX400 and that looked better, but I turned the corner only to find a 50" and 42" Samsung plasma side by side which captured my attention. Now im more confused than when I started yesterday.
Apparently Hisense parts are imported from china and then assembled here in SA(Midrand).
The search continues....

As you will notice throughout this thread, SD feeds on a LCD TV are not as good as a Plasma.

I have a Samsung LCD and my SD quality is also not amazing, but that is the pay off with LCD and SD. If you however look at a HD feed on a LCD you will be amazed.

Plasma is better for SD and sport as you will hear shortly :D

The OnLive demo was really cool from a gaming perspective, but even more-so was a feature (available on all Vizio passive 3D TVs) that the company is calling "Versus." It's basically a way for two gamers in the same room to play head-to-head or co-op on the same TV, without an annoying (and cheatable) split-screen view.

Each gamer wears a pair of special passive 3D glasses and can see a different, full-screen 2D view, eg Player 1 and Player 2. Since 3D TVs are designed to send a separate image to each eye, the "Player 1" glasses would have to "left eye" lenses while the Player 2 glasses get two right eye lenses. According to Vizio it's working with publishers like Eidos to implement the feature, and it requires very little modification of the game itself ("as little as 12 lines of code").

I thought this was pretty awesome. New LCD's are getting amazing. But note that high end plasma is still up there ;)

Maybe leave the sound to someone that understand a little more?

Anyhow zenbaas ... before you look at the *chuckle* Sony, take a look at the Yamaha 367 which, if memory serves, is R4,000.00. Even the 467 is about R6,000.00 and add a decent 5.1 system and even though you would have spent slightly more, you'll have much better sound ... and one that can do sound over HDMI, HDMI 1.4, 3D Ready, larger power supply and just better.

If your budget is tight and you can't get another R2k or R3k - then there is nothing wrong with the Sony. But if you can extend the budget by a few thousand, the difference is worth it IMO
