Your lounge, if you're buying from Makro you can return in 7 days money back no questions. A mate of mine went through 4 or 5 TV's that way before he decided to keep one.

That's why I love Makro, if you're going to do it make sure with the salesman before though just in case.
Yes and no. Do they keep panasonic tv's as well that I can test drive...? Otherwise what's the point..? AFAIK their selection isn't huge.

No Panasonic, only Sony, LG, Samsung and Sinotec as far as I know.

So because there's no Panasonic there is no point? Interesting outlook.

It was merely a suggestion, use it, don't use it.

I can't say that I have seen a single Panasonic TV in any the stores I have been to.

Guys, I need some help. My dad asked me to pick out a TV for their bedroom, the budget is R5,000.
The problem is that I'm useless at this. With PCs you can actually look at specs.. but on a TV they all have the same specs. O.o
...please help... [In 5th Element red-head-chick's voice] ...please help...

32" or 40"? How far from the bed will the tv be? Any media players? SD DSTV? HD DSTV? Will the TV be at any angles from the bed, ie, viewing angles?

A 32" should be the right size, and it's quite high up, (but tilting the stand can fix that), otherwise the viewing angle doesn't have to be that great. All the media players are in the Living Room, but currently there isn't a HD anything. So I'm not 100% sure if I must push towards a HD TV.

At 32" and viewing distance of approximately 2.5m, then Full HD will not be required, however the price difference on 32" HDReady and FHD is rather minimal. Have a look at your Sony 32EX400 LCD FHD. Very nice on SD for an LCD. Otherwise the 32 " Samsungs range around R4k for HDReady to R5K for the FHD. You should be able to pick the Sony up for R5K. I'm not sure of the model numbers for Samsung. But the Sony is really smart.

Thank you very much. I'm still somewhat concerned about Sony's 1 year guarantee...

Well, i guess you could look at the Samsung then, i think they still have the 3 year guarentee, dependant on which store you purchase from, however, the sony interprets the SD feed better than the Samsung. Your other guarentee alternative is the Sinotech, but i don't suggest you go this route, as they don't look good on SD feed. Try get to a store and try compare the Sony with the Samsung, BUT, make sure the guys have the same SD feed showing. On HD and FHD, they are all very similar, but it's SD you need to check. And make sure you are standing / sitting the same estimated distance from the TV, as what your folks will be viewing from. This will be a better indication for your choice.

Thank you for the additional info. :) Seems like I have some physical shopping to do.

Not such a fan of LG but they have a 32" LCD (could be LED-backlit) with 100Hz motionflow for R5,999 at some shops. 100Hz is especially better for handling fast movement like in sport, and they're generally better at displaying SD TV than cheaper 50/60Hz LCDs.

Worth checking out.

My brother in law has an 42inch LG Scarlett LCD. It's a very nice TV :)

So I went looking at some Plasma's today and I noted something rather interesting regarding the anti-reflective coating. The 50 Inch Samsung C550 (Full HD) has a lot less reflection on the screen than the C450. I mean a lot less. The reflection weren't bad just something interesting I noted while checking them out. I honestly could see much else different between the two screens. I also managed to see a Panasonic 50 inch(3D version) in action and the screen is beautiful. What I still find quite sad is how overpriced screens are that are larger than 50 inches.

Interesting Zen. I thought the 450 had the anti glare. Maybe I am wrong. Mine has a fair amount of glare but not really that bad. Don't really watch in the day anyway so no biggie.

The C450 does have anti glare Grim. The 430 doesn't at all. I just found it interesting how much less glare the C550 had. It was wierd! :p lol.

Ah ok, glad I didn't get the 430 then :p

Surprised there was such a big difference though, sure it wasn't just the way the light was hitting the screen differently?

Lol...you should have seen me bobbing and weaving around to make sure that I wasn't just seeing things. There were a bunch of chicks behind me that I could see relatively easy on the C450 and then I moved around until I could see them in the C550 but I could barely make out their figures! :D

I think that the higher you go in series the more effective the anti reflective coating is. I have a 650 and one of its selling points was good a/r coating. I had to go with that as I have lots of light in my room.

Can we have a separate discussion thread and let this be the bargains thread only?
