Not neccessarily, my issue with the Samsung D (2011) 6 series LEDs is the relfectivity of their panels (& the chance of uneven light distribution if you get a bum unit).

To be honest, if I were in your position (< R13K budget) I'd go find a 2010 LA40C650/750 which has a nice non-reflective matt-finish screen (& would save me some dosh to spend on other things)

It's not that I want to spend as much as possible. I just wouldve opted to go for the Panasonic 42 inch GT30B plasma (I think thats the right model Im talking about) series had it been available in SA... But alas us losers in SA always have to settle for 2nd best...

Series 6 LED edge-lit LCD is 100Hz. Better engine than the plasma but double the price. Plasma better for SD, just as good for 720p.

Thanks for that! Is it then more or less safe to say that most of the people on here would agree that SD content looks fine even close-up on the 42inch plasma? And that there's really not much difference in quality than with a fhd screen when your watching fhd bluerays? And would most people here say that even on a 51inch plasma (while watching 2,5m away) the SD content would not look crappy and irritate the **** out of me? (last question just for interest-sake coz wife is not having the 51inch... damn her flare for decoration! )

Not sure about 51", but the 42" looks amazing and the HD content I sometimes play on there blows my mind each time. Hook it up with HDMI and you're good to go.

+1 although still a lot to spend when 43" plasma offers exceptional value.

D6x00 is 200Hz (must be for 3D), D5500 is 100Hz.

If you mean the Panasonic Viera, that's a really good make but they are very expensive. I preferred the Sammy anyway.

It's not an option in SA.

No doubt they're the best, but Samsung would still offer better value for money.

I really don't think you should worry about it that much. Nor resolution.

Their plasmas are supposedly the best avaliable, but not widely avaliable locally and very expensive. Also I see the 2011 30 models have been lambasted a bit for uneven (floating) blacks.

But if you're set on a FHD 42" plasma, I believe they are your only choice.

So imagine that this is what Ill do... I get the Samsung 43" plasma (the 490 with 3D) and I buy the new SmartHub (BD-D7500) as well... That should satisfy my needs of 2d-3d conversion with the added bonus of SmartTv and all-that as well as good resolution and refresh rates for mostly DSTV SD content but also great HD and 3D content... right? (God for one that started out looking at just a premium FHD 42 inch plasma with no internet-connectivity sh*t nor 3D, I realise that I do have a tall order...) Btw thnx to u guys for assisting me with this brain-teaser...

Then imagine all of this and we get back to the actual thread-topic... Tell me the best deals and bargains to realise my dreams?

Yeah thats the only option! And thnx for that "uneven blacks" comment coz I havent read that. And since Im at the point where Im willing to import Ill definately look into it...!

Yup have been there and seen them. Thats when I started looking into Viera. But SA just always gets the blunt end of the stick. Im not willing to setlle for hand-me-down Panasonics when I know theres better Panasonics out there...

I get the feeling that you want real quality since you're even thinking about importing... In that case I really don't think you should even consider the 4 series Plasma. Spend a little extra and get the 51" 5 series. If you want a smaller display get a series 6 or 7 LCD/LED and look at the equivalent Sonys and LGs

But he can't go 51".

I've suggested 43" in the interim until something better at that size arrives. It'll be between 5 Series and 6 Series LCD (closer to 6 Series) for what he wants the TV for (mainly DSTV), at half the price.
