Leap Motion

Let us know your thoughts :)
Had a quick play during lunch:

  • Neat little device, aluminum outside, rubber underneath.
  • No problems installing.
  • The calibration process is a little weird - you aim the Leap at your screen / reflective surface and 'paint' over as much of the surface as possible until a bar fills up.
  • The diagnostic app that shows a basic geometric representation of the hand is the best thing so far - when you zoom in on the 'fingertips' you can see a magnified view of the subtle shakes that the hand makes. This really lets you see how sensitive the device is
  • The windows integration is a little weird - I found it hard to click but I might need to re-calibrate the device as I was pointing it at different surfaces during the orientation process (screen wasn't reflective enough derp) The problem is that you click by moving the finger forward, but that also causes the cursor to dip down & miss the target.
  • It says there's too much light. I've got lights turned off and blind closed. Hmmm...

Gonna play with it some more at home and see how it goes & will let you know what happens :).

Got mine today as well :D. Didn't have to pay any additional charges.

Agree with saor, but do not have the light issue, office brightly lit. Excellent hardware, the low, to no latency really impressed me. The software, apps need a lot of work. But it is still early, looking forward to killer apps, and some hacks!

anyone use skype and get a video?, as soon as i plugged mine in it said i had a new webcam, then opened it and saw what the leap saw for 10 secs then i think the leap service started and skype cudnt access vid anymore, was quite cool, just wished i had recorded it. green video with split colours next to eachother of what was in the view of the camera sensor.

overall, mine seemed to work fine from the start with no calibration, then tried calibrating it which took some time because i have a matt screen which doesnt reflect well, i then used a small mirror and kept sensor pointed at center of mirror while i moved side to side until i got 89. all the apps work fine, the one thing is there are few apps so im left craving more to use it with. might try make something myself

Seems it doesn't like sunlight. I'm at home now under bright lights as well and it's working perfectly. I wasn't even sure if calibration was necessary...I just saw the option and assumed it had to be done, though I still wonder at what it actually achieves other that to re-establish the Leaps field of view? But yeah - really hoping for some cool apps in the near future and MUCH better work on the Touchless app.

Gonna download Lotus a bit later...seems it's one of the better apps to show off the Leaps capabilities. Anyone downloaded any apps yet?

Edit 2: I really hope someone release a 3d desktop interface / file system. At the moment it's a 3d device in a 2d environment.

Edit: Yeah - the default windows installer had a camera icon when I plugged it in...wasn't running skype though.

I downloaded all the free apps. Cut the rope isn't opening for some reason. The rest worked. In terms of motion tracking, Cyber Science works perfect, very smooth movements. As for lotus, I was just making random movements with my hand to see what happens, dont know how to play it properly yet. Moving with "Touchless for windows" is ok, but it would have been way better if it had similar clicking gestures like those from the Cyber Science app, but trying to double click....thats another story. Lol, I end up moving the icons all over the place trying to double click it.

Got mine yesterday...

Downloaded all the free Mac apps and all works fairly well.

There is still a lot of development work that needs to go into the software though, but overall a very nice device and a different experience.

I ordered 2 so I have a spare if anyone wants to make me an offer.

all ive been able to use is the visualizer and some web apps, in airspace i click install then it loops through downloading, ive tried uninstalling leap but that didn't fix it and i cant delete stuff from my airspace.

dplasma, which OS are you using?

What are your machine specs?

I have noticed that my machine really works hard with most of the apps.

win7 64 bit ultimate
8Gb ram
core i7 2600k
nvidia 570gtx

running apps is not the problem, its my airspace/account not being able to download apps for some reason

edit:leap motion forums seems to suggest running as admin, duno why i never thought of trying that, ill see if it works when i get home

did you get 2 saor? or over leap?
I just bought the one, but I don't really have the time right now to play with it. One of the things I was hoping to use it for was music (sending midi), but I find on my older dual-core laptop things slow down too much having music software running & Leap tracking my hands. If I was a gamer / developer / had a newer pc - I'd keep it, but as it stands I'm not really using it for much...so would rather pass it on to someone else who's keen to get their paws on one.
