Lightspeed

yeah, it sounds to me like they gave you incomplete information.

a tip for testing their details, is to plug your laptop directly into their Router and to set your laptop's network interface to those details. That way, you will know if their details work and if the problem relates to your PFsense.

The observium name is simply the network monitoring system they use. it seems they have you details to access it, to monitor your connection.

I did come right thanks, edited my post at the top.

Ran a Speedtest now that the line is quiet.

I'm downloading it at 100KB/s, usually I get 2MB/s from other sites.

Edit, okay after 10 minutes it went up to 1.3MB/s. Downloaded in about an hour.

Speeds are erratic on this though, starts off fast then just goes haywire. I've emailed them about it to investigate as it resolves to a local IP so it shouldn't be slow.

Urgg. El Capitan download is painfully slow.

thats prolly coz apple servers are being hammered. I've heard that apple has some local presence in some of the INX's, so if your isp is peering, it should be pretty quick

My download is coming from a US server (8.254.191.222).

seen some funny business on lightspeed fibre

their FTTB fibre throttles you if you use your fibre at high speed for too long. first it slows down to 66%, then if you carry on to 33% of your total line speed. "usage management"

then they tell you on the phone they don't throttle, but if you catch them out, they cry contention. contention does not limit to a flat rate, mate. it's erratic! nono, its "managed"

well if contention means the ISP can only guarantee, lets say 10% (10:1) of the speed, then I can only guarantee 10% of the invoice paid.

bah humbug!

You are more than welcome to pay for 1:1. It is just very costly the raw price.

I haven't experienced this throttling you speak of and their contract terms do speak of a fair usage policy.

I also do speedtests quite often and they are fairly consistent.

Also you haven't stated which ISP offers a better service, no use complaining about one if theres not a better benchmark.

lol eish.. sorry if I hurt your feelings...

I never stated I am here with a better service or knows who does, actually I can name a few outside the country, but as the defeatists say.. TIA!

I saw the thread about lightspeed and read its about business FTTB 10:1 and commented on experience.

so for example, if someone uses a constant 120-150mbps and think you can get away with it on a 200mbps connection(or even 300mbps), this service is not for you.

They will lock you in a contract and throttle you.

Cybersmart Lightspeed Fibre will throttle you if you are a reliable data user and blame it on contention. If you are an unreliable data user, as in you use bursts of data with now and then full/high speeds, this is service is for you.

IN actual fact, they don't even give you the chance to get constant higher speeds at the off chance that nobody else is using the contented link. lets say 9 of the 10 people in your contention pool is on holiday to the moon, CS will throttle you and blame it on contention, because its "managed".

just sell a Capped product if you cant handle uncapped data, stop sugar coating it with AUP/FUP and "usage management" or what ever marketing rubbish someone can come up with. its dishonest.

2mbps 50:1 never meant 50 x 2mbps subscribers on one 2mbps link. This started in 2004/2005, I'm sure by the sales guys. The "1" meant 50 subs to one link, the one link size(throughput) was decided by the ISP's minimum service offered at maximum load, 40% or 50% or 60% etc.

CS says 10% acceptable when things get tough.. laughable tbh

news you can choose to use or lose

I've been using FTTE now for well over six months and I haven't experienced anything close to what you are saying.

Proof of poor performance would be nice to back up what you are saying.

And if you can't suggest anything better then I'm not sure what you are complaining about, basically you are saying FTTE is not suited for high data users, but you are not giving anyone who is considering FTTE an alternative, whats the point in that? Thats how constructive criticism works.

Having a super hard time with Github. Working with one of their technicians but it's a lot of back and forth emailing and we don't seem to be getting anywhere.

Can anyone else check for me if Github clones are also super slow on Lightspeed?

I'm testing using this repo: https://github.com/FokkeZB/Tutorial

On Lightspeed it takes almost 5 minutes to clone this repository (last result was 4m48sec), on my home Vox VDSL account it takes 32 seconds.

Anyone on Lightspeed ftth in Cape Town? What's the experience like? No throttling etc? I'm looking at the "400 Mbps" option for R899.

I'm becoming very agitated with Lightspeed support now.

Github is completely crippled when using their network and I'm continually told there is nothing they can do to fix it. Our 4Mbps ADSL line performs 10 times better than our 50MBbit Lightspeed (Business) connection on Github and somehow support thinks this is okay. I also never even given any reasons to as why it's so slow.

At least I can download Ubuntu ISOs at 6MB/sec.

Is it not the tool you are using ?

What tool? The download manager?

Doesn't matter what I use, direct download, git command line, etc it's all frustratingly slow.

Support even has me testing on a separate port on their router directly.
