List of congested exchanges?

I think there is a LOT to be done if we can set aside our individual efforts. To read through all the single complaints and outcries are nausiating. Only one word comes to mind - Apathy.

ISP's represent bigger groups of consumers, hence getting these company's to take responsibility and group their peers, would have a significant effect. If only we can break free of our "South-African" mentality shackles. I suppose that in itself would be a bigger barrier to cross than Telscum itself. No wonder they are flourishing in this arrogant sub-standard service delivery.

To think we have an individual to "make waves" as our only way forward is a joke. No disrespect Techead.

Then there is ICASA. What does ICASA really mean, other than a "quality" sticker on your paid for device translated into a higher consumer price.

I wonder, there must be the usual "helpfull" ISP forum entities reading this. Will there be any worthwhile response????

ICASA and telkom works together , icasa does nothing.

it will, though typical congestion on an exchange has more of an effect on latency, not so much throughput

from my experience with resolving the bothasig exchange

Local and intl is equally affected.

If your local latency is 100%, and your intl latency is buggered, then your local exchange is very probably not the issue, but much rather a ISP routing issue or something else down the line.

The big issue here is that the first reply after the modem is 600ms +, in other words just pinging the exchange 500m away from you is a 600ms round trip. If that is the case you can add 600ms to whatever your intl latency is. I'd almost put money on it that 595ms of that 600 is the time it takes the DSLAM to process the ping request.

I tend to agree that ISP might have a little more leverage via the channels that they may have available in telkom.

Then again I maintain that the problem that many of these exchanges have will cost more to fix than the value that Telkom puts on customer satisfaction. They are in no way whatsoever obligated to provide you with a decent service so you can be sure that the likes of telkom will exploit that as far as they possibly can.

One thing that I am starting to consider is to cancel my telkom ADSL service altogether, and start investigating 3G alternatives. For about R1000 p/m I should be able to get quite a bit of 3G data allowance. Nothing to lose really...

listen here. Im quite happy to sit back and say to myself

"well Im sorted now, so screw the other okes... that is their problem not mine"

but I havent. but when I read posts like this I think to myself why the hell do I bother!?!? :wtf:

but then I tell myself that most people who post on here have NO CLUE about what is really going on, and the mechanics of a multi layered network/infrastructure. So I press on... Regardless of whether you bitch and moan like a girl

feedback :

they have finished looking at 021 919 41xx and 021 919 09xx You both know who you are.

I have a meeting with them this afternoon at 15h30 to discuss the results of the investigation. He did however, let me know that both these numbers are on the same DSLAM, go figure... :)

Will post more info once I have finished the meeting

Thanks for the feedback... holding my breath in anticipation... I dont want to be negative, but hell, if you get results done, I owe you a beer some time :-)

I guess since me and you stay only a couple of street blocks apart , we would be on the same exchange ?
Also been having lots of problems as per this thread

I see your beer and raise it to a case of beers for techead if he gets something done :)

If you want to help me, you can supply me with the below info.

  • let me know what ISP you using and what sync speed with your noise ratios etc etc
  • do some pings and tracerouts to www.bbc.co.uk and www.mweb.co.za
  • install pingplotter and do the same to the above addresses. (5 min capture is enough)
  • try do the above on at least TWO different ISP's or more if you can
  • email it all to me [email protected]
  • dont forget to include your telephone number please

^^ this

simply because you live around the corner, doesnt mean anything. You could terminate at a different dslam. send me the info, and I will see what I can do. Its a slow process, and Im currently very busy with Bellville exchange

Whatever dude. Do not know how you came to interpret this the way you did. That in itself is concerning. Telkom does have that effect on one... Keep doing what you are doing. At least some-ONE is.

if I didnt read it right then I apologise. Moving on... I have feedback on Bellville North and need to post it all...

To be honest, I am not sure if the ISPs have the right channels always. Yes they have service managers appointed for them by Telkom, but perhaps if these service managers knew which channels techead was working through, they could do the same. Remember Telkom is a freaking HUGE company, not everyone that should know what to do always do, or at least that is my opinion.

Telkom feedback for BELLVILLE NORTH (WBLX) exchange

hi guys

right, this is gonna make a lot of people happy. We all know that this exchange is screwed, but not for much longer.

the short version is that this exchange still runs on ATM technology, which is obviously quite limiting. ATM typically has throughput of about 155mbit with overhead of about 18% for the protocol. Bandwidth is peaking at this 155mbit during busy periods, and this is causing the issue. Its already been tweaked and stretched into oblivion. Alternate measures now need to be taken.

How do you fix it? "Simple" Get Metro Ethernet up and running, that's about 10gbit. But that is a long term project, and obviously takes a while to get done. It IS in the pipeline though, and has been flagged. In the meantime, however, I have spoken to him and there is a short/medium term solution which we are looking at which will keep everyone at Bellville North going for a good couple of months. Perhaps the rest of the year, hard to tell.

There are two ATM channels at Bellville North. ATM 1 has DSLAM's 1-4 connected (about 5000 people), and ATM 2 has DSLAM's 5-6 connected (about 1800 people). They gonna move DSLAM 4 (about 1200 people) across to ATM 2. This will alleviate the pressure on the ATM 1 pipe.

Its gonna take about 2 weeks to get this done, after which we should all see a serious improvement.

I hope I have brightened your Tuesday evening somewhat ;)

Tx for the effort and feedback.

Wonder if i should now let my ISP know that I have found the reason why, when, how they are not providing me the service they promised and agreed to......:erm:

you might wanna, its got nothing to do with them at all

In my view and this is my last mention of it, it's got EVERYTHING to do with them.
It's called service provision. THEY are my paid-for assignment to MANAGE my DSL line to Telkom.

THEY should be doing the footwork that you are doing.
