Living with an ulcer

Eat your greens... you will suffer from a lack of B12, so either eat your greens or take a B12 supplement at bedtime.

B12 oral supplements are useless. Rather get the IM shot when you at the dr.

As a beekeeper I've been reading a ton of research on various things relating to bees. One of these is propolis.

I made an extract of propolis in olive oil and decided to give it a try the next time my ulcer decides to flare up. Normally I would go on a round of ameprozole 20mg for a month and I'd be fine for the next 6 to 9 months

It's only been 4 days and I've been taking half a teaspoon, once in the morning and again at night with a teaspoon of honey afterwards.

I have a gastric ulcer and when it does flare up I suffer from very bad abdominal pain that wakes me up in the middle of the night and I end up losing out on a lot of sleep.

The only way it would go away is if I take 20mg ameprozole once each morning. Normally by the second morning the pain is gone and I continue taking it for about a month.

Last night was my first night that I did not wake up due to the abdominal pain so it took 3 days for the pain to stop.

I was tempted to just take the ameprozole as the pain 2 nights ago was really unbearable.

I'll continue just on the propolis oil for another two weeks and see how it goes. Just glad that I did not have to stop this trial and resort to going back to the ameprozole.

There are many research articles on propolis and its effect on internal and external ulcers.

This is just a couple that I've already read.

The old myth of not eating chillis turned out to be wrong, about 7 years ago I had an ulcer and avoided chillis. But a buddy of mine was like no man give it a try and see. The chillis actually soothed it, as it stimulates mucus and alkaline build up.

Yep, I am currently suffering from an ulcer that is acting up (does it every couple of years even put me in ICU for 5 days once) and I chow chillis to get rid of the symptoms. What doesn't help is drinking. If I have a few beers the pain becomes unbearable. Smoking is also not smart.

Oh yeah smoking and drinking aren't good, neither is coffee or milk. Rooibos tea is ok, I've not had an ulcer now in 7 years now. In the past it would flare up every 2 years or so.

Anyone tried treating with cabbage juice (Google or YouTube this)

Sounds like counter productive but it worked for me, as soon as I started eating them again I was fine.

Ulcer disappeared when I was off coffee but then I started drinking 6am lattes again. Guess I’m going back to rooibos tea, sigh.

Not that it’s bad, I just don’t understand why I don’t learn my lesson the first few times.

You need to kill the bacteria causing the ulcer, coffee just aggravates the ulcer, basically means it wasn't actually gone.

Yes, I was tested for H. pylori but it came back negative. No idea what’s causing it. I do notice that my gums are inflamed whenever the symptoms are at their worst.

H pylori is an organism that causes an infection which results in ulcers getting worse or not healing. You can develop ulcers without it being infected.

Medications can also thin your gastric lining. NSAIDs like aspirin will do this.

You can get ulcers at the entrance of the small intestine as well. Duodenal ulcers. These result because your intestinal fluid is not basic enough to neutralize the stomach acid

If you changed your diet like I told you and done 6 to 12 months on pantoprazole and you still struggling then it's time to book with the gastro

And don't waste your time with a stupid scope make them use the recorder and camera capsule

I admit I haven’t changed my diet much. I was looking into it but I think life just got very busy, but I’m going to make that a priority now.

The first time I had symptoms I had a sports injury and was on ibuprofen. The next time I had flu and took sinus meds with ibuprofen in it too. But now all I use is Synaleve and Tramacet.

I would go for a scope but my medical aid wants me to do it while awake , no way am I having somebody stick a tube up my behind while awake o_O how will it help anyway? They just get visual confirmation and then tell me to continue doing what I’ve been doing? What could cause intestinal fluid that isn’t basic?

Sorry if I asked these questions before, I will have to go and read this thread again.

Well I'm not a gastro so I can't say for sure. Though you need to check if it's actually an ulcer where the ulcer is how many ulcers.

They have the clinical expertise to see if its a sphincter issue or a motility issue they can tell alot from a visual inspection.

Do you have gap cover? If you do then do it in the hospital let the medical aid pay their low unrealistic rate and submit to gap cover for the balance

I have a condition called a hiatus hernia. I was diagnosed 8 years ago.
Eish man.

After about 9 months of discomfort and failed attempts to treat gastritis - the scope revealed I also have a 'small' haitus hernia and the Gastroenterologist did not recommend surgery.

The Gastroenterologist didn't seem too concerned but he said I should not ignore it and change diet which is bad news for me. No more chocolate, coffee, alcohol, gluten. Basically saps the enjoyment out of food. Although he did say I can cheat a bit with a coffee if I take a PPI. I need to find out more and figure this all out.

The thing is though I don't have any symptoms other than a bit of discomfort between my rib cage area which is pretty much permanent. Sometimes feels a bit worse when hunched or driving on a long trip. Medications don't seem to make a difference so atm I am off them. Before the hernia diagnosis when we thought it was normal gastritis I did full bland diet for a month (so kak) and that didn't improve anything either. I have since started a daily coffee and maybe 1 beer a week and everything still the same.

Feels like I have a physical problem not an acid problem like the meds are trying to treat. I am due to go speak to my GP about it but at this stage I want them to cut me open and put everything back where it belongs.

According to Google like 13-20% of men have this condition?

I'm doing much better now days. You just need to manage your condition through diet. I also have a small hiatus hernia, we actually lucky as a larger one will require surgery.

Find out which food triggers the acid reflux and avoid them or eat them in moderation.
Truth is I eat whatever I want but in moderation. I take lansoloc 2 - 3 times per week to cut down the acid.
Wear loose pants, sleep on your left side, eat early 6pm so your food digest better, cut the weight and body fat through exercise and diet it makes a difference. I hardly suffer now days.

Best thing is not to worry as that will stress you out and promote more acid production. Been there stay strong!

Thank you for the post which was encouraging. When I think about it and mope, it definitely gets worse..
I don't get acid reflux or any other symptoms which is the weird part. I have already cut down massively on the acidic stuff and upped my exercise routine. According to BMI I am slightly overweight 92kg / 1.9m tall so will try lose some.

I had to live through an untreated case of ulcerative colitis for years. On some days I'd lose up to a cup of blood daily through bleeding while taking a crap. Disturbed me at first but then I was like "Oh well, I'll either die or get better". Thank god it's the latter.

Same. The gastroenterologist told me that I need to have surgery to fix the problem.
I don't want to - I'm scared.

I had the surgery. No regrets.
If you have it, just make sure you go to a specialist who does it regularly. I went with Prof Heine van der Walt.
