Local Only 3G / HSDPA Access

but we've been thinking a lot on how to better utilise the dead(ish) time between 2AM and 6AM. ;)

make it half price or something between those times, people will then use it.

sort of like what telkom did/does with callmore time.
I remember we use to "download stukkend" between calmore time!

A good idea, and one of my favorites as well. Not so easy to implement at system level though but we're working on it.

Im sure it can't be THAT difficult to update the tarrifs according to a schedule - keep us updated please v3g - please create a poll or something so we can se what other users think....

Where many people get it wrong when they think about the Vodacom network and systems is not to take the sheer scale of the animal into account.

It's one thing to run a small database that serves a few hundred or even a few thousand users.

It's completely a different matter when you have a system (consisting of a large number of different computers) serving 10's of millions concurrent users.

So everything is much more complex.

True - But Im sure Telkom's database was even bigger, and this was a few years ago when they started supporting variable pricing.

I'm not sure how much work, and how much money it would require to implement this into the billing system, but i'm sure we can all use that 2AM - 5AM for downloads instead of it going to waste.
it's not for everyone, but some i'm sure there must be a market for the hardcore downloaders.... like I said, create a poll:

Would you keep your PC on during the early hours of the morning for cheaper downloads?
1) Yes, Definitly!
2) No ways
3) Maybe, Depends on the money I can save

*Do not take this poll, it is an example for V3G

I have no idea of the total amount of Telephone/Cellphone Numbers there are, but my guess would be anywhere from a 7:1 to a 4:1 ratio...

I think we all know it's a no-brainer that there will be massive uptake of such a service, so the poll will be overwhelming positive.

1stly - if u say it is a no-brainer than does that not tell you exactly what to do with the 2AM-5AM Drought....?

2ndly - 1 Single person may have a phone at home, and a phone at work, but only 1 cellphone.

And Vodacom is not the only cellphone provider, but Telkom is def the only landline provider.

Using data, I would assume?

Last time I looked there were about 4 million land lines while (as you point out, between the networks) there are more than 30 million cell phones.

So you 7:1 ratio is actually 1:7 :)

Telkom being the 'only landline provider' is a big part of the high cost of data. Pretty much why this site exists.

Ok, good. so Cellphone Networks have more Users, and they charge more too - so they make loads of money....great.
but couldn't the 2-5AM bandwitdh be used instead of going to waste - how much would it cost to implement such a service? arent Vodacom spending money to keep these servers and such up and running 24 a day anyway?

I am only giving ideas V3G, as Vodacom doesn't and CANT always know what every customer wants - hence the reason for the poll. You saying it will win by a mile only proves this service will be used for benifit - For the customer (Cheaper between 2-5AM), AND Vodacom (As it is generating money, not just idling...)

V3G, just out of curiosity, do you speak to people Higher up at Vodacom about forum ideas, etc..?

Exactly why I also want to see the 'dead period' used.

Don't get me wrong, we want to hear your ideas, so please keep them coming. In this specific case, your poll question is pretty much "Do you want lower rates after hours or not?". So you can see why the expected answer is a no-brainer. ;)

A fair number of product ideas that got implemented started on this forum, the old-timers will tell you.

This forum is very visible to just about every level in Vodacom including those 'higher up'. Why do you ask?

Just wanna know if all this thinking work could make a change, and create a better experience for end-users, and even generating some profit for you fine folks at Vodacom.

Ok how about a differently stated poll question....

"Would you actually download between 2AM and 5AM if it was charged at discounted rates?"

Yes - Beats sitting infront of the TV and watching late night infomercials (hehe)
No - I have a life and I work.
Maybe, if it costs 25% less.

Vodacom3G as always well on top of the question!

I can confirm that Vodacom management is well aware of what you guys say and want, and that V3G is really making your voices count at the highest level in the company. And BTW: V3G is one of the ‘higher up’ people ;)

Local bandwidth question

Read on the forum a while ago that someone asked about free local access. Any update on this?

Donny

I think that only applies to ADSL, Vodacom doesn't differentiate between local and international traffic.
