Logik 47 vs Sinotec 47

Was in the same boat as you a few months back. And after much deliberation, reviews and demos, I bought the 40" Sony, W series with MF. Trust me, this is the best thing since sliced bread.

If you don't need a tuner (use the tuner from a VCR or DSTV decoder), then look at MECER (Mustek). They have Full HD monitors 42" for under R 8,000

I use 2 of them on my desktop (for computer work), but also have one for my kid to watch TV. Quality is really good, and price is even better.

Best bang for your buck would be a Samsung/LG 42" HD Ready plasma ... the ones going for about R7K-R8K.

If you can stretch your budget a bit, get a Panasonic plasma ... either 720p or 1080p ... doesn't really matter ... the difference between a 720p panel and a 1080p panel showing a FullHD BluRay is negligible. Contrast levels, colour correctness and motion processing are much much much more important factors of PQ.

Saw this on Audio Vision's website :

Panasonic 42'' HD Plasma TH-P42C10M R9999.99 not sure about warranty

Also , a Sammy at House&Home : PS42BS430 - R7489.00

They also have a 50 LG : 50PQ30 - R12479.00

Deals Direct Euroline 50 Plasma (uses a Samsung V4 panel) : R8799.00 2 year guarantee , so you send it in they try and fix it which is not best solution but trust me if I send it in the 3rd time I either want my money back or a new plasma of same size.

I know everyone is saying "quality not quantity" , but if I look at it this way. I will probably want to upgrade in 2 years time (hopefully LED's will be cheaper seeing as 3D http://hdguru.com/choosing-the-hdtv-that’s-right-for-you/getting-the-best-hdtv-price/246/ is the new whoo ha) , so why pay R10k for a 42 if I can get a 50 for R9K? I know I'm probably barking up the wrong thread here , but seriously is name brand so important?

Awaiting replies/flames/rants/raves/cursing.....

I would say go for either that 42" Panny or the 50" LG ... both are good prices.

I figured I spend a lot of time watching TV/Movies, so I forked out R40K for my 50" Pioneer KURO. I have not seen anything that comes close to it's picture quality.

Panasonic has bought Pioneer's KURO tech and they are claiming very high contrast levels for their 2010 V-line ... also supports FullHD 3D. I'll just wait to see if the first buyers could confirm that they have achieved Pio 9G KURO black levels, but if they have, then that will be the panel to get.

I am also doing some research on the Plasma vs Lcd and my conclusion is that if you go for a plasma, go for higher end makes ie. Toshiba or Sharp if you on a budget stick to lcd...the prices have come down quite a bit. Hi Fi corp is selling a 42" full hd Hisense (which is one of the better "no Name" brands around) for R6499. At the higher end you can get a 40" Sony V series 550 lcd for 10k which is a very good buy atm. The special is from Sony, so one can buy from any reputable dealer.
I spoke to a 3 reputable installers of hd decoders/tv's and all 3 recommended the Sony lcd, and advised to stay away from plasma all together.

Ok, Sony V550 SD is actually quite accepatable. Seen it, watched it. A hellova lot better in actual fact. Plasma, Samsung - Panasonic is in a bit of poo locally, and haven't sorted it out yet, although Panasonic makes the best tv (plasma) in the world, for a price. Samsung models to consider (budget constraints) 42B450 and 50B450 (HDready) 50B550 (FHD). I would reccomend staying away from the 42B430 as it is an older engine and no pc input, and definately NO A series, they old school. I got my 42B450 for R7449, usually retails for R8999.00. 50B450 around R12-13K, (can't see the value in almost double price for extra 8 inches (maybe my wife can!)) and 50B550 around R15-R17K.

Stax has the Toshiba 40" full hd lcd for 11K with built in digital tuner, and when ever sabc go that route, one won't need the extra decoder, and depending on location one can pick up some extra channels as well.
I think I will settle for this one as Toshiba makes excellent panels.

I see Hifi Corruption also has a 40 Toshiba , not sure about model nr for R8999

I know Hifi has had issues with warranties etc , anyone care to comment?

I think you can find your successor here

I'm not a big fan of LG , at work we have sent in close to 19 20" LCD's back due to various issues so I don't think I'll go for LG :P

As for the Panny , went to Audio Vision in Woodmead only to find out they have closed (tough economic times and all).

So I guess I will have to shop around a bit more to find what I'm looking for.

The Tosh @ Stax is the 42AV635DB - R11K

Hifi Corp is the 42XV635DB - R14K

Hifi also has the special on the 40LV655P - R9K

I've scrounged the net for comparisons , some say the 100Hz on the XV is a good selling point , together with minimal lag on gameplay. But for that amount of money wouldn't a 40 Sony V series be a better option.

Guys , I'm seriously pulling my hair out here , too many options and too many variables.....help!

What area are you in?

Talk to Leslie at New World in Menlyn (Pretoria) ... he will be able to get you Panasonic plasmas at good prices.

Thx TYR , thing is my fiance is up for a contract renewal so looking at getting a voucher so I can push my buying options a bit higher with my current budget.

Hifi has the 50 Sammy (the B530 range I think) for R13K (-R3.5K voucher I get from cell upgrade) so effectively I'm paying R9.5K for a 50 Plasma. When I asked the guy at Hifi about the burn-in issue he said it hasn't been resolved yet so not sure if he was just trying to sell me a LCD :P

Ek is nou so confused soos 'n verkleurmannetjie op 'n smartie boks!

Don't worry about the burn-in thing ... I ahve two plasmas and have zero, zip, none, zilch burn-in issues.

Go for the 50" Sammy, I'm sure you'll be happy. If the guy really want to sell you an LCD, let him set up the two sets next to each other.

- Make sure you view some SD content as well.
- Don't just view Pixar type animateds ... those will look awesome on any set.
- Try to view the sets in the same lighting conditions as you would have at home. LCD (and especially LED backlits) are usually set to some demo mode that is extremely bright, sometimes referred to as "torch" mode ... and with colours that are over saturated. This works very well in a brightly lit store (and with animated content), but when you get it home and watch a movie with the lights dimmed the disapointment starts.
- Look at flesh tones. Plasma will be much more natural than LCD.
- View the sets a few degrees off angle. They have managed to fix the issue where you could hardly see anything when viewing an LCD off angle, but there is still a very noticeable colour shift. (this is even the case with the best of the best LCD's, ie. Sony XBR8 and onward and Samsung Series 8 local dimming LED's)

In the end you should buy the set that looks best to YOU.

Good luck.

I was told that plasmas will loose it's brightness due to gas technology. Does this happen progressively or does it work like a battery...all is well untill one day it goes flat?

Is the Hi Fi corp Wharfedale the same as the UK Wharfedale- I seem to remember that Hi Fi was using the name without permission on DVD players etc etc Wharfedale UK only make speakers AFAIK.

Its the proper wharfedale, they're the official dealers/suppliers in SA.
