Logik 47 vs Sinotec 47

My point is that although Wharfedale may have a selection of really good products, they mainly cater to the lower income consumer and thereby predominantly make lower grade/quality products.

A perfect example of this is a company like Hyundai. Although they do have some really good cars, like the new Tiburon and the Tucson, they've traditionally catered mostly to the masses.

I hate when people make uninformed blanket statements like this on the internet. Yes, wharfedale electronics are mainly cheap junk. Wharfedale speakers on the other hand are the real deal. The Diamond series are great stuff, real value for money at the price. The Evo II and Opus series are not cheap and does not cater to any "masses" that I am aware of. They are excellent world class speakers (like the Diamonds, only more so).

Sorry for my off topic rant, it just gets to me when people make such ignorant off the cuff statements as if it should be well known fact, when it's total bullsh*t

Ok , so I opted for the 47 Sinotec , bought it @ Game (R9.5k after R500 discount - R3k voucher = R6.5K :))). My decision was brought on by the 5 year warranty vs the 3 year on components only for the 50 Sammy Plasma from Hifi

Few questions though , and pardon the lack of the correct technical terms:

1. I'm seeing light at the top corners of each side , will this go away with time? Maybe i'm just pedantic but it's really annoying when it catches your eye the whole time when you watch movies.

2. What are the best viewing settings for movies ? I've been playing around but can't seem to find quite the right setting. This is not HD movies , have a PC plugged in through S-Video where I play my stuff through GBPVR (great little media center app btw). Also I can't seem to get the native 1920x1080 resolution on my Desktop.

3. Following question 2 , would I get better results by either getting a gpu with HDMI , or alternatively a media player like the mede8r

4. When playing PS3 (Killzone 2 and Motorstorm) the display shows 720p 50Hz , is this correct?

Know these are a lot of questions but any help would be appreciated.

1.) Think you might be referring to something called flash lighting - it might actually get worse. Take a photo of it so we can see how bad it is, it is quite common on LCDs.

My Samsung has it at the top corners, its not bad, sometimes worse than others, but I got used to it...

2. Try get a DVI > HDMI cable :)

3. See 2

4. Is Killzone and Motorstorm 1080p? Motorstorm 2 is 720P.

Killzone is 720p. I have yet to see a 1080p title, pretty much all PS3 games are 720p. Much of a muchness though, unless you have a biiiiiig screen, and lotsa time to sit and look at the detail there's not that big a difference. Don't know about you, but when I'm jamming Killzone, the only time I can really appreciate the graphics are during the cutscenes :)

If I had the money I would go Panasonic Plasma.

MY problem is the lack of content in SA.
DSTV HD channels that u can count on 1 hand. WTF BS is that.
SD is just horrid.
I'm sorry but no.
4:3 big a$$ pixelled SD poo stretched on a 16:9 HD panel.

You left with DVD which are ok to good.
Blu-rays which are not cheap. (do want Band of Brother 1080p box set)
Consoles and PC's = wooohooo

1. Here is the pic , seems it get's worse with prolonged use and disappear after LCD has been off for a while. Seems there is nothing you can do about this , but this is beginning to look like a deal breaker :(

2. I'm using a fairly old ATI GPU , so no DVI unfortunately. Will probably go the Mede8r route.

4. Ah ok silly me , see they are both only 720p

Top corners are too bad for me - I'd take it back - if I took a photo of mine, it'd look like your bottom right corner, and thats also only once its been on awhile.

My top corners were slightly bright when I bought the TV but now I can hardly notice it anymore? Maybe it gets better over time.

Not sure If I want to take that chance of it maybe getting better. I'd rather take it back , although it's a mission with that huge thing :P

What is Game's return policy , It's 3 days now so I guess I'm in the 7 day window? Also can I take it to any Game as The one in Centurion does not seem to have any stock.

Think Game is 7-days.

I eventually got them to open the exchange one in store so I could test it there.... (much better than taking it back 2/3 times).

take it back, i had none of that rubbish on my sino...

and yes, take rapid's advice, much better! (though i never needed to take one back)

Dammit man! I'm seriously considering the 50 Sammy again now. I'm a bit disappointed with Sinotec to be honest , basically spent the whole Saturday tweaking the Personal settings to get the right picture. I know I know I'm like a freaking Sandton Koo girl at a handbag sale but I really want to make the right decision.

Also , I see the Sinotec's refresh rate is only 60hz ? What is the deal with refresh rate? Will the Sammy's refresh rate be better I presume?

Sorry guys , I'm really reconsidering my options.

well how much is it gonna cost to get the 50" samsung? if you can afford it DO IT man! :)

PS: 60Hz is fine really, 9/10 people can't tell the difference between 60fps and 120fps

PS2: movies and TV display only 25fps, so 120 isn't needed unless you wanna display 3D stuff like in the movie avatar

I can afford it , problem is I used vouchers. Well actually the vouchers are from Vodacom , and I can use it at any shop in the Mall (luckily there is a Hifi Corp in the Mall :P ). Now just to figure out how I'm going to get my vouchers back from Game , hopefully they are not going to be sticky about it.

The model on the plasma is a Samsung PS50B530. I'm still a bit weary about the burn-in and IR "problem" with plasmas. I've done a LOT of research on pixel shifting etc etc to combat burn-in , but will it really help? I've also spoken to one or 2 guys here at work who have plasmas and they haven't had any issues.

Now my next question , I don't have DSTV , only SABC1/2/3 ETV (sad I know) and they always display their silly little icons in the top left or bottom right hand corners. I don't watch a lot of TV but can this cause burn in maybe?
Also I do play the occasional PS3 game , should I refrain from it for the first 300 hours on the plasma to break it in before?

Sorry for all the questions/rants but I really want to make a more informed desicion this time.

You right, there is a break-in period, it's not a requirement, but plasma owners do suggest it. I'm getting my Samsung plasma this week, and IR is the last thing on my mind. Granted, Plasma does require a little more thought when you duck off to make coffee or have a smoke or chat on the phone, at least during the 100 to 200hr mark, but i'm positive you will be more impressed by the picture quality. If you are super concerned about TV logo's, zoom the picture, at least for the break-in period, and then you'll be fine. We have so many commercials in SA, that i don't think the logo stays on for long enough. You might get IR on the screen, but changing sources, or channels, or even running the IR stuff on the TV, will remove any IR. And unlike LCD, Plasma quality gets better with more use, and thus "safer" with IR. I mentioned the other day i got IR on my LCD, no jokes, after 1-2 hours on PS3, it shows up on the menu screen. It doesn't phase me, cause it goes a short time after that. I intend to use my new plasma for all tv and movies, with PS3, but in moderation for the break-in.

That is the backlight bleeding on cheaper panels I was referring too in my post. Should have gone for the Logik IMO, it has far less bleeding.

Ok , so Game will give me my cash back.

NOW , Sinotec has the 5 year warranty which led me to buy it (although it was an impulse buy I must admit) over the Samsung Plasma.

I have heard serious horror stories about Hifi Corp in the past. On the Samsung the give a 3 year warranty which is default I presume , but the sales guy said that is only on the components not the panel. So IF I get a burn in issue it's too bad so sad for me , which makes me a tad suspicious.

I suppose it's back to the drawing board :(
