Air Bags are Good...BUT you should never rely on them alone!!! period
The system is called SRS (secondary restrain system) note the - secondary - bit here.
Why is that? Because the primary safety system in a car (even today) is the good old safety belt.
Air bags are triggered by electronics and electronics are not always reliable especially if someone has tampered with them. Trust me. I've seen a lot of horror stories where people do that for the sake of making money.

Most of us assume that if no warning lights are lit on the dash, all is ok. It is NOT so!
One word of advise for car buyers: have the car checked by the
dealer before you buy it. Just ask hem for full diagnostic report. Yes it costs some money, but it might save you much more in the long run.
I also have a friend who had a head on collision with his brand new renault @ 60km/H...and the air bag didn't even flinched. It simply didn't deploy! If it wasn't for the seat belt he would have been long gone now. Ok he had couple of cracked ribs and bruises on his chest, but that was all. R60000 repairs later and car checked by renault proved there's "nothing wrong" with the SRS system.
Buckle Up!
