Cool. Most macros I've seen are shot with 100mm f2.8 lenses and they look similar, so forgive my lack of judgement![]()
Longer focal length gives you shallower depth of field at the same aperture. For example, on a 40D, at 70mm f/5.6, you have 4.08cm DOF at 1m focus distance. At 300mm f/5.6 you have only 0.17cm.
This is, of course, a hypothetical example, assuming a 70-300mm lens that can focus at 1m right through the range - not sure such a best exists.
