Macro Photography

Cool. Most macros I've seen are shot with 100mm f2.8 lenses and they look similar, so forgive my lack of judgement :p

Longer focal length gives you shallower depth of field at the same aperture. For example, on a 40D, at 70mm f/5.6, you have 4.08cm DOF at 1m focus distance. At 300mm f/5.6 you have only 0.17cm.

This is, of course, a hypothetical example, assuming a 70-300mm lens that can focus at 1m right through the range - not sure such a best exists.

Cool. So basically the smaller the aperture at which you're shooting (high f number), the larger the DOF? Is that correct?

Correct, assuming a constant focal length. And of course the same camera - things change when the sensor/film frame size change.

Look what came to the party, It was humongous.

I've got a nice add on to firefox that gives exif data from right click, properties. Forget what is called, but I think its useful.

Useful to have if you're into photography. It comes built into Safari.

Saw this critter hanging on my window today - no macro lens - just my trusty 50mm f/1.8

Nice one Bwana - you do get some really cool looking moths. Here's another interesting one:

and that thing flies?

One of these days I'll get a proper macro lens because setting the aperture is a real pain the way I do it.
