The SsangYong-Mahindra partnership has brought in another new model, which could prove to be the next big thing in the subcompact SUV segment in India.

Yes! We are talking about the Mahindra XUV300, based on the SsangYong Tivoli. It will be going up against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and the Ford EcoSport.

It is a promising product and here is our first impression of the newest Mahindra model, which we drove in Goa.

We’ve told you enough and more about the diesel variant of the XUV300 but now we tell you about the petrol variant. It’s an exclusive review and one that we are sure most of you have been wanting to see.

While the features remains the same, the 1.2-litre petrol engine has a lot going its way but lacks one crucial thing. What is it you ask? Well watch the review.

The Mahindra XUV300 is on sale in India at a price of between Rs. 7.90 - 11.99 lakhs.

What you'll like:

• A truly premium crossover. Nice build, quality & refinement levels
• Great looking! Smart design has none of the usual Mahindra quirkiness
• Cabin has enough space for 5. Quality-wise, the interior is more like a Hyundai
• Fantastic engines. The petrol & diesel, both, offer fast performance & good driveability
• A compliant ride with neutral road manners
• Top safety kit. 7 airbags, ESP, ABS, all-wheel disc brakes, TPMS, seat-belt reminders for all & more
• Loaded to the gills with equipment (front parking sensors, sunroof, cruise control, auto headlamps & wipers etc)

What you won't:

• The most expensive Compact SUV in India! Not overpriced, but definitely higher than expected
• 257-liter boot is the smallest in the segment. There are cheaper hatchbacks which have a larger boot
• Concerns over niggles in a freshly baked Mahindra. Our test car itself had issues
• Lack of a proper middle variant. W6 trim is simply too bare-bones, while W8 is expensive!
• No automatic option in a market that is moving toward ATs
• Mahindra's after-sales service quality is a hit or miss. Remains a gamble
• Some important features missing (dead pedal, parcel tray, rear air-con, steering reach adjustment etc)

The XUV300 petrol is powered by Mahindra’s in-house developed 1,197cc, 3-cylinder turbocharged engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. This is essentially a reworked & turbocharged version of the 1.2L unit found in the KUV100.

It features variable valve timing and produces a healthy 110 BHP (@ 5,000 rpm) and 200 Nm (2,000 - 3,500 rpm).

While the power figure puts it behind the EcoSport’s segment-leading 121 BHP (1.5L) & 123 BHP (1.0L EcoBoost), the torque rating puts it comfortably ahead of all its direct rivals. In two words, the petrol engine is "damn good".

The XUV300 is also available with a 1.5L, 4-cylinder diesel engine that has a variable geometry turbocharger. Like the petrol, this one is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

It's already been seen in the Marazzo MPV. However, in the XUV300, the state of tune is different. Here, it develops 115 BHP (@ 3,750 rpm) against the 121 BHP (@ 3,500 rpm) of the Marazzo.

Its 300 Nm of torque is identical to the Marazzo’s, but it is produced at 1,500 - 2,500 rpm, while in the Marazzo, it is produced at 1,750 - 2,500 rpm.

The XUV300 diesel produces more power and torque than all its direct rivals. In two words, this engine is also "damn good".

Mahindra XUV300 in SA: engine line-up, trim levels confirmed

The new Mahindra XUV300 is about to launch in South Africa, but CARmag.co.za has managed to source local engine and specifications details ahead of the official announcement.

From what we understand, the local XUV300 line-up will include two engines and two generous trim levels, for a total of four derivatives.

The turbocharged 1,2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine offers 81 kW (at 5 000 r/min) and 200 N.m (from 2 000 to 3 500 r/min). There's also a 1,5-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel unit (delivering 86 kW at 3 750 r/min and 300 N.m from 1 500 to 2 500 r/min) which we drove at the international launch in India. Each engine is mated to the front axle via a six-speed manual gearbox.

The W6 trim level will feature LED daytime running lights, LED taillamps, follow-me-home headlamps, a cheeky roof spoiler, roof rails (although seemingly for cosmetic purposes only) and 16-inch steel wheels.

Inside, you’ll find electric windows, air-conditioning, a multifunction steering wheel, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system (with a four-speaker sound system, Bluetooth and auxiliary/USB ports), satellite navigation and smartwatch connectivity.

The Mahindra XUV300 launches in South Africa this week and we can confirm specifications and pricing for the stylish newcomer.

Indian carmaker Mahindra is quietly doing very well for itself. With the Scorpio Pikup and compact KUV tallying up credible sales, Mahindra is launching the new XUV300 which takes on the Hyundai Creta, Renault Captur and Ford EcoSport.

South Africa is the first market outside of India to receive the XUV300 and we'll be getting 2 engines and 2 trim levels. “The XUV300 is the newest product of that philosophy and combines fresh thinking and our best engineering and design talent. We are very excited to see how our new compact SUV will not only wow customers in our second home – South Africa – but allow them to Rise!” says Mr Arvind Mathew – Chief of International Operations Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.

In terms of engines, Mahindra is offering a petrol and a diesel-powered XUV300 for SA. Kicking off the range is a 3-cylinder 1.2 turbocharged petrol engine with 81 kW and 200 Nm. The second engine is a 4-cylinder 1.5 diesel and offers up 86 kW and 300 Nm. Both engines are mated to 6-speed manual transmission. Mahindra claims both engines were tested thoroughly in South Africa at the Gerotek facility, the identical venue where we conduct our Cars Awards-powered by WesBank.

New Mahindra XUV300: pricing for South Africa revealed!

The new Mahindra XUV300 has officially arrived in South Africa. We’ve already shared details of the engine line-up and trim levels, and now we can bring you local pricing for the four-strong range.

As we’ve already reported, the local XUV300 line-up will include two engines – a 1,2-litre, three-cylinder petrol unit with 81 kW/200 N.m and a 1,5-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel unit delivering 86 kW/300 N.m – and two generous trim levels. Each engine is mated to the front axle via a six-speed manual gearbox.

The local line-up kicks off with the XUV300 1,2 W6 petrol model, priced at R249 999, with the diesel version pegged at R274 999. The 1,2 W8 petrol comes in at R304 999, while the 1,5 W8 diesel tops the range at R324 999.

So, just how big is the newcomer? Well, the XUV300 measures 3 995 mm long and 1 821 mm wide, with a wheelbase of 2 600 mm.

The W6 trim level features items such as LED daytime running lights, LED taillamps, 16-inch steel wheels, a seven-inch touchscreen, satellite navigation, two airbags, ABS (with EBD), Isofix child-seat anchors and an immobiliser.

The range-topping W8 specification level, meanwhile, adds five more airbags (for a total of seven), electronic stability programme (with rollover mitigation), foglamps (fore and aft), parking sensors (front and rear), a reversing camera, an alarm system, hill-hold assist, tyre-pressure monitoring and an electrochromatic rear-view mirror.

Mahindra's EcoSport rivalling XUV300 touches down in SA

Mahindra is bidding for a slice of the Ford EcoSport’s compact SUV cake with its first-ever XUV300, which has just been launched in South Africa - in fact this is the second market in the world after India to receive the newcomer.

Although smaller in size than most Mahindras, one could say it’s a step upmarket, being based on the Ssangyong Tivoli (remember, Mahindra now owns the South Korean SUV specialist). Measuring less than four metres in length, it is the shortest vehicle in its class (no doubt designed around tax breaks in its home country) but the 2.6-metre wheelbase is slightly above the class average.

The model range

On the spec front, Mahindra is offering the little crossover in two flavours: W6 and W8.

The base W6 comes with a 17.78cm touchscreen infotainment system, as well as air conditioning, electric windows and mirrors, central locking, dual front airbags and ABS brakes.

The W8 adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration as well as satnav, voice control and a reverse camera to the infotainment equation, while further amenities include dual-zone climate control, a sunroof, cruise control, multi-function steering wheel, front and rear parking sensors, automatic wipers and headlights, a start button, synthetic leather seat trim, five additional airbags (side, curtain and driver’s knee), a burglar alarm and ESP stability control.

Both versions are sold with a five-year/90 000km service plan and five-year/150 000km warranty.

The interior still looks cheap, the grey or beige colour is a dead giveaway, at those prices it can't possibly be better value for money than the Mazda cx3, Opel Crossland the Renault Capture.

Mahindra South Africa has entered the next phase of its model evolution, with the launch of its new XUV300.
