Global NCAP lauds Mahindra XUV300

By achieving the highest combined occupant safety rating for any Indian-produced vehicle tested by Global NCAP, the Mahindra XUV300 has been awarded the organisation’s first "Safer Choice" award, which is significant, given the myriad Indian-made vehicles in South Africa’s new-vehicle market.

Last month, Mahindra’s compact family car, which was launched in South Africa in the first half of 2019, achieved a 5-star rating for adult occupant protection and a 4-star rating for child occupant protection as part of Global NCAP’s ongoing #SaferCarsForIndia crash-testing campaign.

DRIVEN | XUV300 1.5TD W8 - Could this be Mahindra's finest vehicle in their stable?

In summary

Having first made an acquaintance with the XUV300, a 1.5TD W8, in 2019, the car impressed from the off. Fast-forward almost a year and I got to live with the car and experience it more intimately. It's far from perfect, but the 'imperfections' are user-specific and may not be representative how the next person will perceive it.

I'd much instead have opted for a black interior than the beige, but that is about the only gripe I have. Oh, and the relatively small boot. But other than that, there is a vast list of positives that will only substantiate why this Mahindra is the best one that money can buy. And the drive is by far its biggest attribute.

Looking at it, you would probably never give it a fighting chance against its rivals. Though, when you least expect it, this car will pull off an upset and walk away with its hand held high. The XUV300 is the industry's underdog, and it deserves a fair chance to prove its worth.

Is there an option for a black interior? The beige thing does not age well and it is my only gripe with the car, It would probably put me off from buying one.

Badge snop of note:

He'll buy the next generation, claiming that he was only waiting for the brand to settle and that they deliver magic features for the price - when by that time, the brand isn't pricing themselves lower than the competition anymore.

Saw it with various people around Hyundai and Kia.

REVIEW | There's a trove of treasures inside the Mahindra XUV300

• The Mahindra XUV300 is finding favour with more South Africans.

• It comes loaded with standard features.

• The infotainment system has a trove of hidden gems that makes the XUV300 a value-for-money offering.

The XUV300 is also very fuel-efficient, and probably one of the most frugal cars I have driven all year. The vehicle also comes with an eco-scoring system which rates how economically you drive and gives you a score out of 100 points; it also shows you an instantaneous score in real-time. So it shows how heavy your foot is on the accelerator, or how pedal-happy you are on the brakes. It does so by monitoring your speed, gear selection, acceleration, and idling.

There's also Apply CarPlay and Android Auto to connect your mobile device. This, too, can only be connected when the vehicle is stationary to keep the driver from being distracted.

So while it might look like a plain vanilla cake, there's a bunch of tasty treats inside.

No auto version sadly. That would increase appeal for this. Not many small suv diesels on the market so an auto would kill it IMHO

SA-spec Mahindra XUV300 is Global NCAP’s first five-star car in Africa

Safety organisation Global NCAP has confirmed the South African-spec Mahindra XUV300 as its first five-star vehicle in Africa.

In January 2020, the safety body awarded the Indian-spec XUV300 an overall five stars for safety (five stars for adult occupant protection and four stars for child occupant protection). Following a “production compliance review”, Global NCAP now says this rating applies to the SA-spec model as well, since the Indian and African programmes “share the same assessment protocols”.

Interestingly, the model tested in India featured two front airbags as standard, just like the base model here in South Africa. Locally, the high-spec variants boast seven airbags and stability control as standard.

In addition, Mahindra SA says the local XUV300 features three-point seat belts on all seats, while the Indian model makes do with a lap belt for the rear-centre passenger (the latter, in addition to “poor” Isofix markings, explained the Indian-spec model’s four- rather than five-star rating for child occupant protection in the original test).

Mahindra XUV300 Petrol Automatic (AMT) Review - Team-BHP

Mahindra XUV300 Petrol Automatic Pros:

• Fast performance from the impressive turbo-petrol, despite the AMT
• Surprisingly nice on the expressway, thanks to the power on tap, acceptable smoothness & good stability
• Improved AMT with hill start assist, drive & reverse lockout, creep disable on door open...
• Mature ride & handling package. Enjoyable high-speed behaviour
• A truly premium crossover. Good build, quality & refinement levels
• Great looking! Smart design has none of the usual Mahindra quirkiness
• Cabin has enough space for 5. Quality-wise, the interior is more like a Hyundai
• 5-star GNCAP rating & kit. 7 airbags, ESP, all-wheel disc brakes, TPMS, seatbelt reminders for all & more
• Loaded to the gills with equipment (front parking sensors, sunroof, cruise control, auto headlamps & wipers etc.)

Mahindra XUV300 Petrol Automatic Cons:

• The jerkiness at low speeds & in the lower gears can get very annoying!
• AMT doesn’t suit a truly premium crossover like the XUV300
• Expensive! Plus, for the same money, you can buy competitors with smoother ATs
• 257-liter boot is the smallest in the segment. There are cheaper hatchbacks which have a larger boot
• Concerns over niggles. TUV300 AMT owners went through a tough time
• Mahindra's after-sales service quality is a hit or miss. Remains a gamble
• Sad audio system by current standards. The bass, especially, is poor
• Some important features missing (parcel tray, rear air-con, steering reach adjustment etc)
