Mail sending dead slow ?

Suddenly, since Monday my Mail sending has slowed down. I did not make any changes to my Macbook.Speedtest shows .93 Ping , .38 down , .11 up. Telkom line and Mweb. I'm almost sure the speed test used to say <50 mi. It now say 300 mi. I'm in Roodepoort. When hitting 'send' to email, the wheel next to ' sent ' spins for 35 seconds before 'mail activity' shows blue and the message goes. The wireless light on the modem only flickers when it goes after the delay. The size of the message makes no difference, one line or with some pictures, same 35 seconds to go. Any advise out there? Thanks, Duncan

First, understand that ping times have very little to do with mail. You're not pinging the mail server anyway - instead you're getting response from some firewall in front of it. 300ms latency anyway is nowhere near slow enough to cause 35 second times for mail.

Second, open a terminal and type the following:

Code:
telnet your.mail.server 25

It should respond with four lines:

Code:
Trying xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (the IP of the mail server)
Connected to your.mail.server
Escape character is '^]'.
220 your.mail.server ESMTP (or something like this)

How long does it take for each of these lines to to appear?

Use Spotlight - the little magnification glass thingy at the top right corner, and start typing in "terminal", you will see it.

Also I found once my email didn't work with Mail, until I unchecked "Use SSL" in Mail -> Preferences -> Accounts -> Advanced.

Hi all, I typed telnet etc and clicked enter. The 4 lines appeared instantly? Since had word from a fellow on apple forum who needs a link to instructions from mweb for setting up a mail account. Any one will do , even outlook. Where do I find such a thing? Mweb techy phoned for an hour and we changed the servers and ports till I was blue in the finger. Now on custom - 25 with no authentication and still no change. Mail from my google account to my mail account goes instantly. When using message centre to google it's instant . Anyone know what an opendns is ? Someone changed to a free one and it fixed a similar problem ? They are on apple forum so I can't phone them. My settings were , ports 25, 465,587 and authentication was set as none.Any help? Thanks , Duncan
