Makro Sinotec Full HD Special

Hell Apoc that's is so very disappointing to hear but thanks for the feedback all the same..

Just complete conjecture & personal opinion, but here goes:

I wouldn't buy a Sinotec plasma. I think it is ultimately a more challenging technology to master, and I don't think a 'budget' plasma is a great idea. I am very happy with my LCD and I think the fact that is a volume technology (with Sinotec's own factory in China undoubtedly churning out panels for name brands) plays to its benefit.

I had hoped your experience with the Sinotec plasma would be different, but I'm not altogether surprised.

I really wanted the Sinotec to blow my mind. But it wasn't meant to be.

I must honestly say the Samsung does look better quality wise and worth the extra R1000. It IS a visible difference
I will continue to keep an eye on this thread and also update my experience along the way.

Can one of the wise members on this forum indicate which is the latest technology, LCD or Plasma (I Know LED is coming). Thanks

LCD
Now there is also improved Plasma
Then LED as you said
Then ther is O-LED coming

Thanks, do you think there's any point in waiting for the newer technology eg OLED or LED or just bite the bullet and go for LCD now?

guess u either have not checked the price difference or money is of no concern.

Okay.

I took the Sinotec back today.
Struggled to see the Boks pummel the AB because of motion blur and also bad color and contrast. So I took it back to Makro and they wanted to swop it out for me.
Took some time and talked to 3 different salesmen. 2 of them confirmed that they had the most returns on the Sinotec brand.
Also the guy at returns asked rather amused: "Another one?" when he heard it was a Sinotec being returned.

So I decide to get the Samsung instead. Paid in a R1000 difference and took home a 42" Samsung Plasma. Makro's price was R9500 but they gave it to me for R8999. Same price as Game.

Extremely happy with the swop. Color looks better, contrast is better. No motion blur. And according to the fiancee it looks better in our home. She loves the swivel stand
It also starts up 10 times faster than the Sinotec. With the Sinotec it first gives you a black screen and then for about 5 seconds a "Please Wait" screen. Only then does it search for a signal and shows the picture. With the Samsung it is almost instant picture and sound.

I'm not saying all the Sinotec's are gonna be like this but what if it happened again after I swopped it for another Sinotec? If it was after 14 days I would have been without a TV for days.

As for the 5 year warrantee? Well done Sinotec, nobody can beat that.

Hi guys, new member to the forums.

I found this thread last week, as I was trying to decide between LCD and Plasma, as well as brand name. Also, I didn't want to pay anything more than R10K for a set. The TV would mainly be used for sport (rugby, soccer, cricket mostly), and then also movies and tv series. At the moment, I only have the SABC channels and ETV set up at home, and will switch DSTV back on once the British football resumes in 2 weeks time(!). My set-up is the normal DSTV, not the HD PVR.

Anyway, after looking around a bit, I found the Sinotec MP-42HC56 full HD LCD at Makro Ottery for R7999. Was the best price I'd found for a full HD LCD so far, so I bought it yesterday. Tested it in-store next to the Sony Bravias, and although you could clearly see the quality wasn't as good, the R4000 difference in price was just too great to ignore. I've also only read good reviews of Sinotec after-sales service, so that was a big factor too.

I have to admit that i was not too impressed with how some of the sports showed up on the tv. Very blurry when it panned to long shots of the players especially. Now admittedly, I've only watched it at home on the free-to-air channels, but from what I hear, it would look pretty much the same on DSTV SD. The other thing was the really ugly remote control - simply awful, to be honest. With such high prices for decent universal remote controls nowadays, this is a big determining factor in the purchase for me.

This was for sports - I have to say that movie DVD's were incredibly good on the screen. Excellent detail, very good colour.

Not too fussed though, because I planned on returning it if I wasn't satisfied with the quality, but now the problem is in choosing another TV.

APoc84, please let me know how that Samsung plasma works out for you, as it sounds like you are also looking at using it primarily to watch sports.

I'm looking at going the plasma route now, but my other choices would be either the Sony 37-inch HD ready LCD, or the Sony 40-inch Full HD LCD (which is a bit pricier at R12K). A friend of mine has this very same 40-inch Sony LCD, and I watched the SA/All Blacks game on Saturday on it in full HD - truly amazing! No motion blur or any of those types of problems. I think his is 120Hz or somewhere around there.

So, apologies for the long post, but it's great to have forums like these to help with purchasing these pricier items. If you guys have any suggestions on which way I should go, please feel free to let me know. Cheers.

if you're gonna use it for TV, especially SD Quality, GET A PLASMA!

FullHD don't mean squat if you're not primarily using it WITH FullHD Sources (XBox, PS3, Blu-ray Movies, PC)

Yeah, good point. But the thing is, it never hurts to "future-proof" these things. I plan on getting the HD PVR about a year down the line, once we have more HD content to choose from in this country, so from that point of view, I'm leaning towards the Sony 40-inch Full HD LCD.

I'm not planning on upgrading tv sets for a long time after this, so I'm thinking I might just go with Full HD now and get it over with.

Dude i love technology and what what but this is just ridiculous.i mean whats the point in me spending cash now to go for a an HD if its gonna be 'old' tech in 2-3 years.but its the same with anything..... its sad how HUGE my 54 cm looks these days.lol.

I also purchased the Samsung Plasma.Although I have not tested it regarding sport my decoder which is SD looks great on the Plasma.I will check it out in due course for sport. However the pub I drink at play solely sports channels and run Plasmas with SD decoders and I have never seen the picture blur.Used the HDMI for a while from a full HD
player playing a normal DVD and the quality was far superior than the old Panasonic TV and Panasonic DVD player.

Well I went past Makro Woodmead this morning to compare sets. The Sinotecs were poorly displayed with feed coming from a blu ray dvd player but running via a RCA connector. Looked shocking. I then asked the salesman to connect the blu ray direct via HDMI to the 42" set and the picture was a whole lot better but still poor. I played around with the picture settings but it made little difference. I've been very let down by the product to be honest in terms of it's intrinsic quality and poor picture performance.

They had the 50" Samsung Plasma on display with the blu ray and hdmi feed, superb, superb, superb, superior build quality, finish and picture...and at R11999-00 a relative bargain... The only thing that is holding me back is the 12 month warranty, simply not long enough for my liking and R2k to extend it to 3 years but I may just do that...

Disappointingly the Sinotec shows it's pedigree or lack thereof in this company... But to be fair to them they so poorly displayed in relation to the premium brands (Sony, Samsung, LG).

I quizzed the attending salesman and he reckons they have not had more than the usual ratio of returns on the Sinotec sets..

That is so strange, my 'ol Sinotec playing a bluray Source via DVI-to-HDMI displays it fine?

can't see how the pixels need to be any smaller, and I can't see how the colours NEED to be brighter? if it were "brighter" colours, it would be just too much color (remember, an apple is green, but it doesn't look like glow-in-the-dark luminous green)

sandman, please explain "....connect the blu ray direct via HDMI to the 42" set and the picture was a whole lot better but still poor"

still poor? poor how? clarity? colour? brightness?

because it certainly ain't clarity - via HD Sources, specially FullHD, it's crystal clear on my set?

To be honest I suspect the quality of the source disk being used (it was a blu ray disk from Sinoprima themselves). 1st off it was being displayed in 4.3 aspect ratio, we played with zoom settings but couldn't reconfigure to 16:9, possibly output setting on the blu ray player itself but to be honest I doubt that would have made much of a difference.

Found the picture distorted almost, as if the picture sharpening settings were set to high. The picture looked over processed and there seemed to be something unnatural to the colours. Very disappointing to be honest...

I could have spent hours playing with the settings but thought Makro were doing a massive injustice to the product in the way they have them displayed.

The Samsung by contrast just looked superb

Agreed - If my LCD looked anyway Makro displayed them, I would NEVER, EVER have kept it....

At home though it was a whole different ballgame - looks schweet.

Im telling you guys, They put the good quality stuff on the expensive sets - sorta like PnP puts bread and milk on the far outreaches of the store.....
