A huge explosion wrecked government buildings in central Oslo Friday including Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg's office, injuring several people, a Reuters journalist said from the scene.

The cause of the blast was unknown but the tangled wreckage of a car was outside one building and the damage appeared consistent to witnesses with that from car bombs. Police and fire officials declined comment on the cause.

The blast blew out most windows on the 17-storey building housing Stoltenberg's office, as well as nearby ministries including the oil ministry, which was on fire.

Heavy debris littered the streets and a tall plume of brown smoke over the city centre.

A Reuters correspondent counted at least eight injured people. Norwegian news agency NTB said that Stoltenberg was safe in the blast, which happened around 3:30 p.m. (2:30 p.m. British time).

"It exploded -- it must have been a bomb. people ran in panic and ran. I counted at least 10 injured people," said Kjersti Vedun, who was leaving the area.

NATO member Norway has sometimes in the past been threatened by leaders of al Qaeda for its involvement in Afghanistan. It has also taken part the NATO bombing of Libya, where Muammar Gaddafi has threatened to strike back in Europe.

However, political violence is virtually unknown in the country.

David Lea, Western Europe analyst, at Control Risks said: "It's very difficult to tell what has happened. There certainly aren't any domestic Norwegian terrorist groups although there have been some al Qaeda-linked arrests from time to time.

"They are in Afghanistan and were involved in Libya, but it's far too soon to draw any conclusions."

Qaddafi said he will wage his war in europe.

There were warnings, i actually hope it is qaddafi giving some medicine back to the countries involved in destroying liyba. If some civilians died well that is war for you i guess.

You love Gaddafi so much, why don't you emigrate to Libya and die for his cause? That would be a distinct improvement on you spouting anti-Western drivel on these forums.

Sadly i don't love qaddafi but i also don't love what they are doing in Libya. All is fair in war. They blow up buildings and kill innocent Libyans i see no reason why they cannot accept the same medicine.

It's called war and if you want to partake in a war expect this sort of thing to happen.

I don't know nivek but if you going to topple qaddafi then get in and do it, there is no need to destroy libya bomb by bomb to try force him out. Seems ridiculous to me that they are destroying libya to get one man. Show some backbone and get ground troops in and hunt him down. Why do they need to destroy libya?

I read a story today and they have found a mass grave of qaddafi supporters, slaughtered. That is not right bud these rebels they are helping could be worse for libyans than qaddafi but nato seems not to care. Destroy libya and help people who are murdering libyan citizens just because they support qaddafi.

Sickening war purely because they are doing nothing but bombing and they know nothing about the rebels. I have more respect for the US army, they don't mess around they go in and take over. Sure it does not end well most of the time but they don't fight war like a bunch of scared little babies. They go in with troops and do what they have set out to do. How can nato trust these rebels?

Wait so nato bombing and killing civilians in libya is war and not terrorism? Rubbish it is exactly the same thing, nato have dropped 2000+ bombs, killed upwards of 100-500 innocents and you claim that is not terrorism? The rebels are now killing innocents who support qaddafi. No bru what nato is doing is exactly what terrorists do.

Norway are involved in libya so if this was an attack by qaddafi it is war, there are no rules saying the war must be fought in the attacked country, if you attack a country expect your country to be attacked.

I agree. The only difference between sanctioned combat by western allies and terrorism, is the point of view of those carrying out the attacks. To the terrorists, the western forces are the terrorists. People are always willing to scream when a bomb blows up in an attack and kills civvies, but when the military is responsible for civvies deaths, "Oh, it's war, Oh, it's collateral damage." BS. Deaths of civvies in Europe/America by car bomb is no different to deaths by a stray missile in Afghanistan/Libya.

Oh please, tell that to the victims and families of victims from both sides. To these people, it matters very little about the politics of war, or what we call the event. All they care about is the dead and the maimed.

I do get the fact that terrorism is deliberate targeting of civilians, and would never condone it. But dead civilians are still dead civilians regardless of intention. I am outraged at civilian death, anywhere and for any reason. Casualty of war is an easy out to avoid facing the truth of death, I will not bury my head in the sand. A deliberate bomb in a parking lot or a stray missile over a home results in the same outcome, regardless of intention.

Norway sent a loose F16 to Libya to help getting rid of that mongrel Ghaddafi, and so this terrorist attack is justified? :erm:

Alan when you drop 2000+ bombs what is the likely hood of civilians dying? 100% how is that different? you know your bombs are going to kill innocent people yet it is different to terrorists knowingly killing civilians? How do you figure that?

So in my opinion nato should be up for war crimes.

By your logic if somebody steps into bullets fired from a cop's gun then the cop is guilty of murder regardless of intention and should face the same jail time as somebody who deliberately blows another person's brains out
