Money collected from e-tolling in Gauteng will not go overseas, the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) said on Wednesday.

"Of course, everyone is now jumping on the political bandwagon that once e-tolling commences, all the collected monies will be going overseas. This is simply not true," spokesman Vusi Mona said in a statement.

My view is simple. I am not against this because I have always known about it and have never objected to it. It makes no sense to be against urban tolling simply because some profits will go to the people responsible for the tech. A huge chunk of the hundreds of billion that Eskom is spending has already gone to the people reponsible for the tech who are in Japan, nobody is complaining. You people should come clean by admitting that you are against e-tolls for two reasons:
1.) You don't want to pay extra R50 - R350 per month hence the call for fuel levy increase in hope of spreading this to the whole population thus decreasing the burden on you.
2.) You don't mind paying but you are just against it as a silly way to protest against the government.

Uhh, helloooo... You do realise that once e tolling is on in gauteng it will be implemented country wide, so it not only the gautengers that will fork up, the whole country will pay additional tax in any case, it is just much cheaper via the fuel levy.
Your second point is just lame and shows a lack of understanding the real issue, as you say, your view is simple indeed...

Good thing i can still use my etag at Bakwena highways.

The ANC has been getting away with lies for years, this is just more lies. They don't even care if they are caught out anymore.

Bringing my post across from the other thread:
Fuel levy stays 100% onshore and has very little collection fees. It does not require fancy cameras and gantries. It does not require hundreds of e-toll offices in shopping malls across the country. It does not require it's own special police force. It does not require bills to be sent out on a daily basis.

I will continue to pay my fuel levy, I won't pay e-toll. EVER.

The South African system will provide annual revenue of “significantly more than 50 million euros” for eight years, Kapsch’s Laux said.
So that's more than 500 million rand per annum that's collected from road users and not spent on the roads. Well done ANC. Good-luck on getting a cent of that.

It's kinda obvious that e-tolling was about the tenders not so much about maintaining the roads, silly.
 
The cANCer sold out SA for some kickbacks. Over 8 years we are looking at 6 Billion down the drain. 6 Billion could have changed may lives in SA.

Do we have the balls to pull a stunt similar to what is happening in Turkey? The issue is that the country has a malaize about it asif it only affects Gauteng, the other provinces need to join this fight as they will be next!

COSATU Appalled by E-toll Revenue Report

Cosatu is appalled that an Austrian e-tolling company expects to make about R664 million a year from the Gauteng e-tolling system, the trade union federation said on Thursday.

"This makes the argument for tolls more and more untenable, and the argument for using taxation more and more obvious," the Congress of SA Trade Unions said in a statement.

"This is further evidence that e-tolls amount to the commodification of our highways -- a business opportunity for a private company rather than a basic public service for the community."

Bloomberg reported that Kapsch TrafficCom AG (KTCG), the Austrian maker of toll-road systems, said it would get an annual revenue boost of "significantly more" than Euro 50 million (R664m) for eight years from the Gauteng project.

Kapsch's board member Andre Laux reportedly said.

On Wednesday, the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) denied that money collected from e-tolling in Gauteng would go overseas.

"This is simply not true," spokesman Vusi Mona said in a statement.

"What must also be made clear is that all tolls collected on GFIP [Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project] go to Sanral. ETC [Electronic Toll Collection joint venture] is paid for services rendered on a monthly basis, and the payment is strictly according to a bill of quantities as specified in the tender contract."

Mona said the dividends they declared could be paid to foreign companies only after income tax was paid in South Africa.

Sanral awarded the e-tolling contract to the ETC because its tender was more than R2 billion lower than the next offer, he said.

The Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa) expressed its shock at Kapsch TrafficCom's announcement.

"This is money that is being extracted directly from the pockets of hard-pressed citizens to improve the profits and wealth of overseas business," chairman Wayne Duvenage said in a statement.

"The figure Kapsch mentions is around 45 percent of the annual running costs for the e-tolling system quoted by Sanral and the South African Treasury, which depicts sizeable profits for an offshore company, paid for by the Gauteng road user."

Cosatu said it supported Outa's call for the Public Protector or even a possible judicial commission of inquiry to probe the e-tolling deal.

"This news will make workers more determined than ever to fight e-tolling and support the call for an efficient, safe, and affordable public transport system," Cosatu said.

Yes by the R7 billion spent out of the R22 billion collected on the fuel levy. Not a single cent has yet been collected by e-tolling, and not a single cent ever should.
