The only way to effectively deal with the majority of crime in our wonderful country is to eradicate poverty. This is no easy task and the government has done a lot,and continue to do a lot in this area, through grants and community projects, the growth in the economy, etc.
They deserve a whopping amount of credit for what has been achieved.
They need to do a lot more though and because our borders are wide open, criminal elements are flocking here in droves. This is also fueled by hardship and strife in neighboring states. Put an end to it.

I am not sure what the link is between poverty and rape. Anybody who allegedly suffered under apartheid (black people) care to elaborate?

You said the "concrete steps" are working - I pointed out that they're clearly not as at the current level of decline it would take many decades to see more acceptable crime levels. Then you shift your line of argument to say that they're working on the solution. OK, excellent. It has to be based on fact, and fact is that whites were brought up to think that most black men are criminals. Changing a mind set like that will take a lot, and i believe admitting to the problem is a good start. Crime is a big problem, i'm not disputing that. I agree with Mbeki though that a lot of the fear on the part of the whites is inspired by racism.

Yes most prisoners are black, duh 90 % of the country's popullation is black. What did you expect?

(1) What are the concrete steps?
(2) How are they working?
(3) What if any are the proposed strategies for an effective solution?
(4) Do you believe that Charles Nqakula and Jackie Selebi are the right people to be tackling crime in the country?
(5) If not, in light of the above question, do you think that Mbeki is doing his job as president correctly (specifically with respect to crime)?
(6) If not, do you think that criticism about crime labelled at Mbeki is justified by any or all racial groups in South Africa?
