Merc A-Class VS Audi A3 Sportback

The A180CDI vs 1.6TDI is a fair comparison however. Pity, as you said, that there is no 2.0 TDI.

Yep, but buyers have to be careful: the 180CDi manual has a Renault 1.5 engine while the 180CDi auto has a Mercedes 1.8 engine.

Colleague in the market pointed that out to the Merc salesman, who was shocked that someone had actually done his research before handing over money!

Yes. I would not buy the manual.

It is a pity Audi has such a poor after sales service record

Why? This is almost the primary reason why I have stuck to Audi! Nothing but awesome service, including coming to my house to help my wife when I was overseas. Came back with a new battery - no charge.

Services are a pleasure - got a loan A3 S/B last service.

Maybe you had a bad experience with a particular dealer... I see now N1 City. Tavcor in PE has been topnotch for me.

On styling alone, i would say the A-Class. The Audi is quite similar to the previous models.

R300k+ for a car ... sheez, the wifey can keep her old A-Class for a few more years! But if I were to part with that kind of cash (based on biased experience), I'd go for the merc due to the outstanding service we get at Mercedes Menlyn and the comfort levels I've experienced driving a merc.

I wonder where you experienced this "poor after sales service", i've never had such from any of the Audi dealerships i've been to. You just had some bad luck, they got the best after sale service i've come across since i've been buying cars...i've owned a Merc, BMW and a VW.

Seconded. They have really improved in the past 2 years. You just need to escalate to the right people if you have difficulty. That means, talk to the Dealer Principle and if that doesn't work, call Audi SA.
