HP G2 is seen as the best sim VR headset, price considered.
I reckon the Q3 will be about the same IF you have a solid Wifi6 router

They're about the same price?
Quest 3 can also use a cable if needed, though you will still get video encoding/compression.
FoV is slightly better on the Q3, and the pancake lenses are better, so larger sweet spot (better consistency edge to edge), you'll just get the quality loss due to encode (though arguably if high end GPU, you can get better quality as can go higher resolution, but we're talking 3080 or better). Would still say worth it.
Way better controller tracking.
Can go wireless.

Then not a spec thing, G2 is also known to randomly die just outside of warranty.

Ja I have both the G2 and Q3.
Personally been using the Q3 mostly since I got it but my use case is usually exercise and social games like Golf with friends - which isn't really the G2's strongsuit.

If you want to sit at your desk and play away for hours then the G2 is pretty great as there's no battery to worry about and the audio is miles better than the Quest3. Probably my biggest gripe by far that I have with the Quest 3. The Q3's Audio is tinny and everyone in the area can hear the sound quite loudly around you at home as it's basically little speakers blaring.
The lens reflection on the Quest3 is also quite annoying to be honest - something that very few people talk about.

I still see a lot of folks using the G2 for Desktop / sim use paired with steeringwheel or flightstick.
With the Praydog UE injection mods I'll probably use my G2 more often now - just haven't gotten to it over the holidays.

All considered I'd still recommend the Q3 for someone buying a headset today - unless you can get a great deal on a used HP. (I got a refurbished one from Geewiz - looked brand new tbh).
HP and Microsoft has EOL'd Mixed Reality, so while there's still about 3 years of support remaining - it's something to consider.
That said - there'll be massive improvements in the VR field in 3 years time anyway so I'm pretty sure it'll be upgrade time by that time for a huge step up.

G2's dying is 90% of the time just the cable, which you can buy separately for about 2k iirc. I've been treating my cable with utmost care from day 1 after doing extensive research and perusing the r/HPreverb subreddit on the regular for a long time. No problems at all.

You'd just have the headset plugged in if apples to apples so battery is not an issue? I'd guess it's the same as quest 2 where it gets to 80% battery, then draws directly from external.

Audio sure, but you'd be wearing a headset/earphones usually, if streaming connected directly to pc. Do the same on my Q2.

Biggest gripe I have is the mic being so much worse.

Seems like the streaming services have caught up with Firefox. For years, it was possible to use Virtual Desktop and stream movies and shows from Disney +, Prime Video, Netflix etc to a Quest headset - but now, after a few Firefox updates, all these streaming sites just display black screens when playing content. The workaround for now, is to downgrade Firefox to version 119, which you can get from here.

Quite sad really, because there is no SA version of the Disney + or Prime Video Apps for Quest 3 and the official Netflix App is quite outdated and only streams at 480p. Hopefully when Apple's Vision Pro hits the market then these streamers will get a kick in the pants and make some VR apps for the various regions.

Interesting.
PS. Have you tried Wolvic browser on the headset direct?

I don't use any streaming services other than youtube, so haven't noticed an issue nor have I tested Wolvic for Disney/netflix, etc, but hopefully that works as an alternative.

Also hoping Apple will bring VR some much needed attention and funds.

Yeah, Wolvic doesn't work with services like Netflix/Prime/Disney because of their DRM. Some people have said to sideload Chrome for streaming video, but in my experience that doesn't work either, I suppose there's a very specific version of Chrome that has to be used.
Youtube doesn't have DRM so it works on any and all browsers including the native browser on the Quest.

Had family member source a Meta Quest 3 case for me, received yesterday from UK but upon inspection I see that it does not fit with my BinBok Elite strap. If anyone here is interested PM me before it goes to classifieds R450.

You have hardware acceleration enabled on your browser. Disable it and it won't show a black screen

Well, rolling back to the earlier version of Firefox already solved the issue - even if hardware acceleration is still enabled.

I guess this is the Quest thread.

Any of you using the virtual desktop feature? If you're working remotely (not at your desk), how useable is it?

Are you referring to this Virtual Desktop app? It's fine for "working" but it's primary purpose is wireless PC VR gaming. Apps like Immersed are more geared for productivity, with multiple monitors and so on.

Hahaha yeah, it did send me down the rabbit hole.

Ahh, Immersed is what I'm looking for. Do you use it?
I've played around with it. I don't use it for my day job because the work equipment is locked down heavily and we can't just load whatever software, agents, clients, etc. If it weren't so restricted in that sense, then I would use it for work.
On the other hand, I also don't really use it on my personal PC or for hobbies because I save the Quest battery for VR gaming and workouts.

Between the lower resolution, battery constraints and discomfort / heat especially in summer wearing a headset - it's just not worth it imo.

I use mine all the time for exercise / gaming while the AC is pumping, but if you're going to be in an AC environment then you'll 99% of the time have access to your desktop anyway which is just going to be much more convenient / productive than fooling around with a headset.

This coming from someone who really wanted VR productivity to be a thing.

Right, got you.

Also really wanted the "3 monitors in a pair of glasses" thing to be a reality, but I guess that will come in time.

Well those issues are addressable. Battery easily addressable by power bank or using a bobo strap. Heat can also be solved with a bobostrap (Needs to be a halo strap), what few people realize is you can take off the front cover of your quest3 and you can wear it like glasses and have it not touch your face. You also then have clear vision of keyboard/mouse under you and heat becomes way less of an issue.

In other words you can actually wear a VR headset like glasses, but instead of it resting on your ears it rests on your head.

If you have a ground fan

You absolutely can do all of that - but what is more comfortable, having an extra weight on your head (which swivels & sways a bit as you move if you remove the inside interface), or just using the computer screen you already have?

Can you get used to it? I guess, if you have to.

I just don't know who'd want to work on a VR headset, if you have a decent monitor already. Maybe if you really have a terrible monitor and don't have funds to replace it right away, then I can see it.

Having watched many reviews on different headsets, this is mentioned often on both Quest and now more recently, the Apple reviews. For someone buying a VR headset today for the first time, it's going to fatigue them having it on their head for more than 3-4hrs. Nevermind 5+ hours a day for the forseeable future if you're going to make it your main display.

I'd argue that most folks who can afford a Quest3 will already have a couple of larger monitors - 2k/4k display which is superior than what you'll get with Immersed or Virtual Desktop.

I like the idea of all these massive floating screens around me, but every time I set it up, I struggle to find the stuff to actually put on those screens. Sure I could have youtube or netflix or whatever on one screen, maybe two more screens for browsers and email clients, so other work apps... but then what else? I already have two or three decent physical monitors in front of me, depending on where I am, so I don't really need a fourth, fifth, etc... Also, I'm not sure if it's just me but I find quite tricky to drink anything out of a glass, cup, mug, can, etc when I have a VR headset on. Sure, with passthrough on I can actually see what I'm doing but the physical headset on my face gets in the way of taking a sip of anything without a straw.
